I like that this has turned into a TVIV enclave, which I think is both timely and relevant.davebo posted:Mainly because I like Reggie Watts but I also like his format of having all the guests on the couch at once. While I rarely watch it, this reason is why I like the Graham Norton show. It feels like the celebs are finally done with a week of plugging their thing on strict format talkshows, now it's Friday and they all gather at Graham's to drink and laugh, some UK comedian tells a story which makes Al Pacino laugh etc. I haven't watched Corden's beyond some singing clips. Guess I'll start off with the Top Gear one.

davebo posted:Speaking of TV, I hope the Grand Tour release gets staggered on a weekly basis so I can follow the thread when each episode is released. That is how they're planning to release it, right? If it all came as one lump sum the thread would just explode at once and I would just avoid it until I had watched the whole season, and that's a lot less fun. Yes, they said that they'd be released weekly on Friday nights instead of as a batch like Netflix shows. Data Graham posted:Jesus Christ those sunburns. He got skin cancer on his back working as a builder without a shirt out in the sun. Couldn't ask the fellow builders to put on sunblock. Decent working class credentials IMO. Another strong social indicator is the rapid response to alcohol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHzsQFS6KfA

He's sort of the erudite/intellectual working-class man. My parents have a friend like that, he works on his own cars, does all kinds of manual work, but is also very well-read and a very adept debater of all subjects.

The Ipcress File is a film using this archetype in the place of James Bond. Played by... Michael Caine.

Yeah, The Ipcress File is a great anti-Bond. It was made in the 60s when the Bond craze was at its hottest except Palmer is, indeed, working class and a former Army NCO who shops in the supermarket. The sexy intro sequence is replaced by Palmer getting up in the morning and making coffee. It doesn't feel that novel these days since Le Carré et al. have really left their print on the popular consciousness and the idea of espionage as boring paperwork and sitting in cars eating terrible food isn't new anymore.

Michael Caine has always been a solid actor, and I think a lot of younger people, or people not as into older British films, don't get that he was readily cast as something of a tough guy. It's like whether someone looks at Ian McShane and thinks Lovejoy or Al Swearengen.

Steve 'arris has the same exact accent, except he's quite a bit quieter. I guess if you're going to be on an English panel show with Jimmy Carr and that Alexei Sayle impersonator you had better be loud.

Same reason that it's harder for us to get deals like US Netflix just got, where a bunch of shows from one network are available the day after they air. *I just like to shovel poo poo on Murdoch. It's mostly because our terrestrial channels buy airing rights from whoever. Various shows from one US network get spread across several TV channels, which then makes it harder for Netflix/whoever.
