This film has been pretty huge in Hong Kong. Packed in the cinemas when it was out, toys everywhere, I see people with the GB logo every day, and the theme park has a huge Ghostbusters event for Halloween.

Let's see what other films were huge in that region... The Warcraft movie. Terminator: Genisys. etc. etc. etc.

Well the point was that Ghostbusters as a brand isn't only popular in America, and seems to be quite popular in other parts of the world! I made no statement of the quality of the movie!

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/hongkong/yearly/ Ghostbusters 2016 is only the 26th highest grossing movie in HK this year... I can't say anything about the wider appreciation for the Ghostbusters in HK, but it's also possible that since Sony thought Ghostbusters would be their tentpole movie of 2016 and kick-start a new cinematic universe, the theme park deal was penned before the film was released.

Long story short is that Sony is desperate for a film franchise with international appeal because the Bond rights are still up in the air and the MIB / Jump Street crossover idea collapsed, and after that it really has nothing to speak of outside of one-shot movies like Bad Boys.

Sony would really be better off retreating to the safety of video games and just chill on film for a bit.

Aw no, it did? I was really looking forward to that! Do we know what happened? Also Hong Kong is NOT China (not yet anyway). We get all the movies. I was surprised to see that Ghostbusters was so low on that list.

They're also desperate for films that have domestic appeal. Ghostbusters is going to be Sony/Columbia's biggest film at the domestic box office for 2016, followed by Angry Birds and Sausage Party. Magnificent Seven might make as much as Sausage Party if they're lucky. In 2015 their biggest movies were Spectre, Hotel Transylvania 2, Goosebumps, Pixels and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. That's a pretty terrible track record.

That's a bit of an urban myth, apparently a lot of Western companies censor themselves when it comes to ghosts and skeletons in hopes of being able to get their product released in China. Here's an article about it. It's strictly about video games, but I think the gist of it could apply to movies and television.

Ghostbusters did not have a China release, just Hong Kong. Like yeah it's part of China but HK is its own territory.

I've been thinking of a stupid theory of Ghostbusters 2016 that approaches the film in a different way. The characters all unintentionally representing something about the film, itself. The Mayor is Feig: He's in charge of the whole thing, doesn't want this to be a disaster, he's being tough and dressing snappy, but ultimately just leaves everything up to our leads to do whatever they want. The Mayor's Aide is Sony Marketing: On one hand, they want to put the drat cat back into the bag and get people to stop making this whole thing seem like an embarrassment. Now, let's make an embarrassment of the GBs in the media... Federal Agents are GhostCorps/Sony execs: We've got a shared universe going on, you just don't know it yet. I watched this last night. It's interesting that Holtzmann seems to be the most popular character, I thought she was by far the weakest of the four. All the rest had great funny moments but her only part that made me laugh was eating the pringles.

I liked the part where they see their first ghost and manic pixie egon is eating the pringos. Also I like how Wiig spends the entire movie seeing things and saying what they are like your dad reading billboards aloud on a long drive to the beach

Like, seriously, did they nix their budget for a descriptive version of the film for the blind so they just had Wiig verbally repeat every visual gag

It's just. bad. Writing. Plus the more dialogue the faster the pages fill up. The movie has little actual content and that's why no one can quote a joke. There are very, very few.

Ghostbusters 2016 is a film with no jokes and that actively thinks you are stupid. The only reason it didn't lose any more money than it did was because of an engineered controversy designed to make seeing the movie some kind of important act of resistance. There's a very good reason why no one seems to be able to recall a single quotable line or joke from this film other than "the power of Patty compels you." I don't know man, now that I know that Sony personally hired Milo to get a bunch of alt-right dudes to spell "Harambe" with their semen on pictures of Leslie Jones and send it to her on twitter, I think it's entirely justified to be concerned.

But instead, people played right into it instead of just ignoring as they should have if the marketing was full of poo poo.
