To be honest, I'm just glad the former John Campbell is still alive. From the scraps I've gathered, they seem to have lived a pretty hard life over the past few years.

Did the artist formerly known as John Campbell ever say what they want people to call them, either in terms of pronoun or actual name? (other than, presumably, "a piece of trash") It feels kind of weird to be talking about a trans(?)person by their old name and a gender-neutral pronoun.

They have provided nothing but a rejection of their former identity, including male pronouns.

Stepan Andreyevich Bandera being the most prominent example of that
Everything that Campbell the performance artist has done has been entertaining to me. If I had money I might even give them some just so they can keep it up.

I'm happy that fka Campbell is still alive but I'm beyond done with their attempts to turn their mental illness into some bizarre off-putting performance art project. It's hard to sympathize with someone who keeps intentionally burning bridges and driving people away instead of getting help.

I think it makes sense to feel pity and sadness for someone with mental health problems even while recognizing they are behaving in harmful and even obnoxious ways, and also not condoning their behaviors.

I'm just tired of Campbell trying to "trick" us into proving that we're all bad people despite overwhelmingly (and in my case personally) informing them that we'd rather they were healthy than that we have our books or whatever. Their performance art seems entirely oriented around the idea of "proving" that the world is poo poo, and that we're all poo poo, despite the outpouring of support from around the globe. At this point it's abusive. My decision not to further support Campbell doesn't mean I'm plugged into capitalism, suffocating in my own self-interest. It's that what they're trying to accomplish is tacky and cruel.

Also I just started reading Awful Hospital because of the giant crazy spoiler on the last page and it's the weirdest thing I've ever experienced. Yeah, like...asking people to support you personally on a charitable basis isn't an anti-capitalist act. Capitalism requires that the destitute take what they can get from whoever will give it, and in fact is supported by that form of social outreach because it solves some social ills while being non-systemic and non-binding.

Trying to "prove" that capitalism is bad because more people will pay out of pocket for a product than will pay out of pocket for another, specific, stranger to exist is not a sensible proposition. There is no system of government or known culture where the latter even can be the dominant paradigm, as far as anyone knows. Socialism just tries to satisfy self-interest in a systemically humane way, it doesn't erase it.

Android Blues

On one hand, I appreciate that they're trying to do something interesting. On the other hand, it feels like if you cut under the surface of this performance art you get into a mess of bad economics, that roots out of a heartfelt plea for the world to be nicer, but hasn't really thought through the specifics of how that should work.

I mean that's the big thing that makes me not one to mock her. She's clearly in a self destructive spiral and trying to drive anyone away who could help her. She's trying to drive people off because deep down she doesn't think she's worthy of the help or outreach. It's something I've been through personally. No one of course should feel forced to help her, but understanding where she is and having been there, I'm not comfortable with just blanket calling her an rear end in a top hat.

I don't know if she reads this dead, gay comedy forum, but maybe posting mean things about her serves as tacit encouragement of this behavior? If she's self-loathing to the point that she wants other people to loathe her too, this may be exactly what she's hoping to hear so that her hatred of herself is justified externally.

I haven't been keeping up with Broodhollow, so maybe it got discussed in that thread and I'm out of the loop, but... I just found out Syfy is doing a show based on Candle Cove, and I hope Kris Straub is making a fat stack of cash from it.

That's gotta be some kind of first, right? If not the first cable TV show based on a webcomic artist's work, because I vaguely remember some cartoon or other for LICD guy, then the first live-action show? And filmed in frickin Winnipeg.
