Oh yeah that's generally what I do. Grenade/shred as many units as a i can or occasionally take out one unit with a sniper if I really want them gone, then cross my fingers that overwatch hits during the scramble.

Do this without the overwatch.

Sniper-spec Sharpshooters and Shotgun Rangers want to crit, which they can't do with overwatch. Gunslingers want to take multiple shots, which they can't do with overwatch. Grenadiers want to do AOE damage and also expose scary enemies to easy crit shots, which they can't do if everyone else is on overwatch. The only class that might view overwatch as its best option on the turn you break out of concealment is the Specialist, especially with Cool Under Pressure; but you have to consider that you may need a timely use of Gremlin abilities later in the turn.

However, I want to reiterate that overwatch is great if you can get the enemy to path into your unconcealed squad on their turn, since it gives you a free volley of shots.

Yeah. I'm not trying to trigger them on my turn though. It just happens sometimes. I'm not just trying to overwatch my way through the game.
Just trying to get free shots when I can.

E: might as well ask 2 more dumb questions while I'm at it.

1. Is there any way to make the sword useful again after upgrading to magnetic? The sword does poo poo damage by comparison.
2. I am supposed to be able to buy plasma grenades now but the aren't showing up in engineering. What am I missing here?

As for the sword, it has upgrades as well. If you haven't done the Stunlancer autopsy, get that out of the way - that will unlock the sword's first upgrade.

I think most people think MECs are stronger than gene mods. In general aim progression goes down once you chop off someone's limbs, but Heavies don't get much aim progression so they are safe to MEC at low levels. Everyone else you can wait. JadeStar has his Commander's Guide LP that goes on about the different skills and the pros/cons on the skills: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3607006&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=1. That said gene mods are still pretty darn good if you have a sniper or something that you don't want to chop up.

Thanks, I appreciate it. For some reason I was thinking Heavy and Precision Lasers were for the interceptors.

I had heard mecs weren't really worth it but I'll go ahead and slot a Squaddie Heavy in there

I love all the map parcel mods since they all seem to work perfectly well and make more interesting/good looking maps but I think they gently caress with pod placement and movement. I keep running into 2-3 pods stacked on eachother and the only reason it hasn't been a complete disaster is because my squads are packing shittons of upgraded explosives so everything is typically flashbanged, on fire, acidified, poisoned, and possibly even frozen shortly after activation.

Got a kill/capture VIP mission in which I knocked the dude out carried him to the LZ and lifted him. For some reason as soon as I lifted him I got the "yo the VIP's dead" message, though, which is wierd cause neither he nor the guy carrying him ever took damage. After the mission, I got the screen showing him captured and alive, but then got chewed out for bringing home a corpse and didn't get intel.

Is this a regular bug, and if so is there a way I can avoid it next time?

I had that happen on the console version as well in basically the same way. Was quite annoying since you get a lot of intel if you can bring them back alive.

False enemy or true friend?
Quick questions here for ya'll, from a PC player perspective who played a bit of the game but ended up dropping it because of other poo poo I had to do. Is Long War out? How ball busting hard is it, is it better than the vanilla experience? Are the DLC packs worth getting or should I wait for a sale? They looked a little interesting but I don't know if it's 20$ interesting.

BlazetheInferno

Long War team has been making various mods, but there's no all-encompassing "Long War" out right now. There are plenty of mods to make things interesting.

The first of the three DLC is pure cosmetic stuff for customizing soldiers, so that's a pure opinion call there. Lots of biker and punk-ish stuff in there.

The second of the three DLC, Alien Hunters, is kind of a toss-up from what I've seen here. A lot of people don't like the way the Alien Rulers have been handled mechanically, but they do present a strong extra challenge.

The third DLC is pretty widely loved, though. A fun (though very long) mission, and access to SPARKs which are an entirely new soldier type that must be built, not recruited. Somewhat mediocre compared to the MEC's of old, but not terrible by any stretch.

I'd recommend grabbing Long War's perk pack mod, which basically Long War-ifies your soldier classes, and grab "A Better ADVENT", which adds a huge amount of variety to the enemy types by adding different variants to all the enemy types. The creators of A Better ADVENT also recommend pairing it with Long War's Alien Pack and "All the Enemies!" to add even more enemy types in, and balance out the appearance of all the different alien types from the two mod packs. I won't argue with them on it.

Personally, I added in a mod that ups the base squad size to 6, with upgrades up to 8, but that's personal taste and me wanting some extra firepower to deal with the upped difficulty of ABA.

ABA is definitely good but I didn't see anything I really wanted in the LW Alien Pack or All The Enemies! for it either.
I actually really like Sparks in this, they seem like supersoldiers in the best way and they have access to some really nice skills, not to mention flat out high damage output.

BlazetheInferno
Jun 6, 2015
I've seen the Centurion before, and I've been dealing with the ADVENT Drones so far, but I want to see the rest of what the LW Alien Pack has to offer for myself. All the Enemies! just adjusts the appearance and spawn-weights of various enemies introduced in different mods. It's just something to allow you to combine ABA with other mods that add new enemy types. I think Better Pods does something similar, but I'd need to double check.

As for Sparks, I remember them having rather mediocre aim, and while they have the remote hacking ability, they don't have the hack score to back it up. The skills they pack are definitely impressive, but between not feeling as durable as MECs, being more annoying to repair/maintain, and being much less of a melee powerhouse due to a neutered punch (working on memory for everything Spark related, haven't played in a couple months and just picking it back up in the last few days), they just don't seem as strong as MECs used to. They're still quite useful, but they're not as overwhelmingly overpowerful as MECs were.

i really love the class added in the third dlc, i am ambivalent towards the second dlc, and i think the first one is just cosmetic stuff. the alien rulers do sort of spice stuff up, the frost grenade it adds is actually super good. i am not mad i spent the cash but if you hate the alien rulers you probably won't enjoy the dlc that much

That sounds like a bug, usually evac should be auto dropped behind the forge, but eh, that long walk doesn't make it particularly harder because not many reinforcements come down.

Honestly that's a better design anyway, as that way you can actually retreat if resistance is greater than expected. I still think relying on the locked evac is bad design overall though.

Man, is it normal to hit a timed mission that will just butt gently caress you every now and then? I got one that only gave me 8 turns to go just about the furthest distance I've ever seen in the game, populated by tough rear end enemies with a Flying trident guy in every group, and reinforcements dropping in after turn 4 turns. I'm restarting but it felt goddamn undoable in 8 turns.

Of course I decided to finally test out the skull jack for the first time on this level whoops :v:

I run into missions where the objective is almost undoable if you happen to activate every pod along the way.

If the objective is hackable a high-mobility specialist can get the objective and GTFO pretty quick. Mobility PCS' are good on almost anyone but put on specialists combined with the Long War SMGS let you run your rear end off towards hack objectives. Carry a grenade to get rid of any obstructing walls and you can run in, bomb, hack, and get the hell out of dodge (or just evac them).

I got this once, I loaded the autosave and it happened again, I think I either put the VIP down and picked it back up or waited another turn and evac'd without using the mass evac mod.

Yes, it sucks. Sometimes in the early-mid game your guys are wounded and maybe behind on tech and the aliens have just hit an upgrade and you didn't know about it AND it's an annoying mission type with a short timer. I usually say "gently caress it" and bail. It's a lot less of a problem to lose a mission in this game than it was in 1.
