Within 2 hours of the recall being announced I had an Oculus update pushed to my phone that prevents the GearVR being used on the Note7. Everyone hates this drat phone. Will probably swap for an iPhone7+ if the place I bought it from allows that, otherwise compromise to the S7 edge, but I know I won't be totally happy with that downgrade.

Is there a phone with a screen that's bright enough to be seen in the day time, has an SD card slot, uses USB C, is 1440p, and uses physical buttons?

I strongly recommend against the Note 7 Edge. It is way, way too easy to trigger the edge by mistake -- even if you put it in a case.

I keep seeing this, but also a lot of people said after using a spigen case or similar and a recent software update then it's not really an issue anymore. I don't death grip the phone, is it really that bad? The rugged armour case I use on the note 7 is available for the edge and the press shots look virtually identical as far as finger clearance from the screen is concerned. Not super stoked about having to own one, but if I want waterproofing, micro SD and to be able to use the ~$200 worth of gearvr headset and software that I purchased I'm not really presented with a lot of choice.

You hear it constantly in the terminal, and then sometimes you hear about it again once you're on the plane. The people hearing this absolutely know exactly which phone it is, and I'm going to make the wild guess that most of them don't read this thread. I've been vacationing around Asia the last two weeks and it's actually kind of funny (for someone who doesn't own a Note 7) how over-the-top the warnings have been about the Note 7. Airports in South Korea, Thailand, and Cambodia have all had massive white banners with bright red lettering up telling you to not check your Samsung Note 7 and that you're not allowed to turn it on while on the plane because it might explode. Warnings were everywhere: at check-in, at the security screening, and finally at the gate. I didn't see anything nearly as intense when I flew out of JFK. It was actually kinda sad how ubiquitous the warnings were at Incheon right next to a bunch of Samsung TVs and ads

Writing's on the wall for Note 7 in Canada now too. I took a flight on Friday out for thanksgiving and they didn't mention them. When I came back today there was an announcement "due to transport Canada policy do not operate, charge, or power on a Note 7 on this flight".

Verizon does dumb things, but forcing customers to keep exploding phones is not one of them. Now, the issue is likely going to be inventory. The S7 Edge has already been limited, likely due to the first recall, and iPhone 7's are of course hit or miss, and lord knows what the Pixel inventory will be. Mileage will vary. What a fuckup on Samsung's part. I think they would have survived with only a minor burn if the replacements worked, but recalling the phone again is going to hurt.

I don't death grip the phone, is it really that bad? I think that Samsung's biggest mistake (from a PR point of view) was rushing out a "solution" less than a month after they acknowledged the problem. They could have survived the recall if they'd taken the thing off the market and lost the Christmas sales, then re-released it after substantive testing had proved the problem hadn't reoccurred. At the speed Samsung reshipped the phone, they can't have had time for much testing at all, and I strongly suspect the announcement of the fix so early was based on theory rather than data. e: I like physical buttons (well, physical Home button) because I can find them in the dark, or when I'm driving.

It's just a sign that they really didn't understand the issue to begin with. They thought it was a small batch of batteries with a specific battery supplier, open and shut. Once replacements started going up. then they had to go back to the drawing board. If you want to get really cynical, it's still all Samsung SDI's fault, but Samsung didn't pull all SDI powered phones from the retail channel because their statistics told them that further incident with remaining SDI stock was low risk.
