Seems quite optimistic to me. I'm not sure what they mean by "corporate/public show". Rugby isn't a major draw, I doubt you could get more than a few thousand people for a rugby game in the US unless you had the US national team playing an elite opponent, or a game with two elite national teams. Major soccer games won't happen without a natural grass surface, which would require an insane amount of maintenance. Two neutral site college football games plus two bowl games probably won't happen every year, nor would two stadium concerts.

Doesn't San Diego have a pro rugby team now? Might be optimistic that the team will draw in more fan the more games they have I guess.

LV already hosts the USA Sevens, which is basically a big party for rugby fans and might get even bigger after sevens' exposure at the Olympics. That, combined with SH teams moving games to other countries for revenue (Argentina went to London for a game this year, the All Blacks go to Chicago on a regular basis, and likely soon South Africa will join them) means that those rugby predictions might come true.

Bad, very bad!
Assuming this goes through where do the Raiders play while the stadium is being built? Sam Boyd (UNLV's stadium) doesn't seem like it would work even as a temporary NFL stadium.

Do they just play in front of a bunch of angry fans in Oakland?

Davis said they will play 2017 and 2018 in Oakland. Should be interesting. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/raiders-commit-to-vegas-offer-500-million-for-stadium-4-things-to-know/

Actually the Seattle deal was ridiculously good?

Taking a (relatively) small loan from the city to convert an underused storage facility into an arena, investing in the local infrastructure, paying back the loan with fair interest, and giving the city sole ownership of the arena but not the debt in case the ownership leaves.

I'm torn as a Nevadan. On one hand we have this: http://www.rgj.com/story/news/education/2016/10/11/board-approves-painful-changes-crowded-schools/91919718/

quote:

Take Alice Smith Elementary School off the nine-month class schedule and institute year-round classes starting in the 2017-2018 school year.
Provide additional portable classrooms at Booth, Hunter Lake, Whitehead and Winnemucca elementary schools.
Move Silver Lake Elementary School’s fifth-graders to Cold Springs Middle School.
Move Lemmon Valley Elementary School’s sixth-graders to O’Brien Middle School.
Create room for additional classrooms by converting existing space in Loder Elementary School’s boiler room and using the library.
Convert Taylor Elementary School’s computer lab into a regular classroom. To provide computer access, mobile carts would be stocked with laptops and brought to classrooms.
Double-up classes into the same rooms at Beasley, Gomes, Smithridge and Huffaker elementary schools.
Sepulveda would continue its existing sacrifices for space and would not be forced into year-round classes in 2017-2018, as originally thought.

And that's just our Northern Nevadan problems. I have no idea what SoNev looks like.

But on the other hand... the chance for an NFL team even if 8 hours away finally in my state? Especially the Raiders who are my second favorite team? I've been googling "when will nevada get a pro football team" for probably 15-18 years.

I think what's most frustrating is that this goes to a "special session" to vote on, yet we have to put school related stuff on the ballot. I mean my boss's wife is potentially running for the school board this year, and they've mentioned that they may need to make classes for most if not all ages start as early as 4:00am.

Bah what a poo poo show. I'd absolutely love this if it didn't feel so seedy. We may even get the training camp here in Reno.

I'm guessing if they've got a severe classroom shortage, the idea is for one batch of kids to attend 7 hours of school from 4 AM to 11 AM, and then the second batch to go from like 11:30 AM to 6:30PM.

Probably have all the teachers, custodial staff, etc. work 15 hour days, too. This seems like a brilliant idea! Obviously parents will be fine with getting up at 3 AM to get their kids to school, and then paying for six hours of after-school daycare a day, and then trying to go to bed by 7 PM.
