Festival with your real* little sister!

AradoBalanga posted:

This is back in the day when Valor would pop up earlier in games as people leveled up, some learning around now (mid to late 20s, with a few early 20s depending on the pilot) or very soon (early 30s). It wasn't until Z1 that it was changed to be the last spirit command a lot of pilots would learn, usually around the late 30s or early 40s in terms of levels. This is also around the time where games had pilots that learned Valor plus one more damage boosting spirit command (Courage, Soul or Love), just to make things even more crazy. Nowadays, that's a rarity.

I've been playing A Portable, and Kamille comes with Valor right out of the gate... at level 8. So yeah, the older games just gave you some really powerful spirits early sometimes. Hell I already have two confuse casters by stage 11. >_> It's only fair the enemies should have the same hit rates I do. Also the Shuffle Alliance are pretty much far and away my best units in that game. Take hits better than most my supers, have great dodge rates, and can actually hit worth a drat.

When I played A Portable I didn't realize you could increase a unit's accuracy with equipment until I was almost done with the game. :negative:

The MX Portable HP bloat felt generous in comparison. Also Rain was best girl in G Gundam.

Bringing along Allenby and Rain for combos with Domon in J is pretty great. But there's not usually enough deployment space to justify bringing the entire Shuffle Alliance.

Also,

Do the Shuffle Alliance guys just get Valor really early, or are we already at the point where everybody's getting Valor? I know this game is disgustingly easy, but I didn't think you guys meant it THAT much.

If you wanna go with the literal translation, yeah. I normally stick with Atlus' naming conventions since that's what most people are familiar with.

It's the reason you're seeing Alert instead of Flash, Strike instead of Sure Hit, etc. The only exception in my using Iron Wall since Guard is also the name of a Skill.

I ganged up on them to speed up the process but I reckon they each could've taken their targets alone, yeah. Busting out their strongest attacks, the clones should've been down in about three of those.

Not all of the animations are from MX/MX Portable. A good number are taken from Alpha 3 (Endless Waltz) as well as Alpha 1/Impact (08th MS Team, Sazabi, Daitarn 3), with only the OYW content being completely new and Nadesico TV's content getting some minor touch-ups. This leads to hilarity with MX's version of Nu Gundam working alongside Impact's version of Sazabi and you see how the sprite work clashes immensely.

Well, obviously it wasn't a 1:1 transfer, the two games don't have all the same units, and those units don't have identical attack lists, but MXP was clearly the first place Banpresto went looking for animations to copy/paste.

Here we are, there’s no more avoiding it… I really don’t wanna go down this road again. Urgh, let’s just rip this band-aid off and be done with it.

Misumaru’s just finishing his visit to his daughter's grave, wondering if she and Akito are happy together.

Meanwhile, the Nadesico crew is finally getting some images from the Hisago Investigative Committee’s port, including a picture of the Black Ghost. Saburouta figures Harry oughta have just hacked the guys’ server and nabbed the intel but Harry argues that doing would have made them really angry. That said, officially requesting this info turned out a bit pointless.
Ginga quickly recognizes it as the bot we saw in Kyoto and, here’s the kicker, Roux has seen some pictures of it already over the internet. Folks have been talking about the mysterious bot that attacked the Shirahime terminal colony and Saburouta sees what Harry meant. The net works way faster than the traditional military channels.

Of course, Harry figures the committee took as long as it did to give them the info as a transparent plot to harass them. Of course, they’re already used to that treatment. When Roux asks, Saburouta explains that many folks shun the Nadesico for its deep ties with Nergal.
Regardless, we’ve got the intel we needed and it’s puzzling at the very least: a mere eight meter tall robot, capable of Boson Jumping by itself? That’s something neither Earth nor the Jovians pulled off to date.

Saburouta smells Nergal behind it but Ruri already asked and they claim they didn’t make it. But do we actually believe them?
That company has a bad history, what with antagonizing the army and sending the first Nadesico to Mars as part of the Schiaparelli Project, plus a slew of backroom activities.
In any event, it seems the black mecha has mainly been pursuing anti-Nergal elements, and it’s obvious there’s stuff going on in the shadows of the Hisago Plan. Ruri figures that the terminal colony Amaterasu, the kernel of the Plan, is the next most likely place to get attacked, so that’s where we’re going.

Ginga meanwhile is trying to puzzle out precisely what the Hisago Plan is. Roux explains that it's a plan to create a Boson Jump network spanning the entire solar system. To make this work, several Terminal Colonies were set up, with Tulips set within each and every one.
Amuro adds that the Tulips aren’t flowers but, actually, giant gate-like structures built by an ancient Martian culture, allowing even non A-Class Jumpers to teleport. Those Jumpers are, in essence, people with the capacity of performing a Boson Jump independently.
“Wow, I bet they can pull some crazy jumps,” Ginga gapes. “… You’re picture stuff like a ski jump, aren’t you?” Hokuto sighs back.
As a better example, Amuro explains that the Hisago Plan overall amounts to constructing a sort of a high speed freeway, with the Tulips acting as entrances and exits to it, allowing of instant travel to any spot in the solar system.

In truth, construction of the structure started after the Lizard War ended, prior to the start of the Baam and Gryps conflicts. Roux also says that, since the Terminal Colonies were being made outside the Earth Sphere, it didn’t suffer any damage.
Plus, with the appearance of the Baamians, the Hisago Plan became such a priority in our defense strategy against alien threats that not even the Titanos, Neo Zeon or the Giganos tried to pull anything with it. Ginga then points out to the giant alien-shaped elephant in the room, asking where that plan was when the Gulfer and Vegans came over.
The problem is that the project still isn’t finished, meaning there's only a route between the Earth and Mars so far. The whole Hisago Plan is essential for humanity’s future endeavors and the defense of the solar system. Still, the fact that its stuff is suffering attacks seems to suggest that that there are folks around who not approve of that.

We’re approaching the Takiri Terminal Colony, ready to make our Boson Jump towards Amaterasu.
Following a bunch of technobabble, Ruri gives the word and off we go.

The jump is a success and our folks spot Amaterasu ahead – a completely different-looking place from Shangri-La and Neo Japan, Judau and Domon note. Considering the Amaterasu name, George quips that something must be hidden here. Saburouta’s surprised that he’s familiar with the Ama no Iwato legend.
Meeting with Domon has piqued his interest in oriental legends and mysteries, see. Regardless, it’s too long a legend to explain to Judau but Saburouta still expects things to get pretty interesting now.
Ruri orders the Nadesico to hold its position instead of docking, saying that it's usually best to study things from a bit of a distance (wink, wink). She wants to go greet the folks in charge of the place to buy Harry time to work, and asks Vega and Domon to accompany her as bodyguards. Vega’ll bring her bike.

Big angry man Azuma is in charge, demanding to know who goes there. As Ruri and co introduce themselves, Yamasaki at least is a bit nervous to see THE King of Hearts escorting her. Azuma doesn’t care, however, wanting to know what business brings them here. And for that matter, why is this clearly adult woman cosplaying in his colony?! “Are you a Red Comet fangirl or something?! What a joke!”
As Vega laughs a nervous denial, Ruri inquires what's wrong with people from the Federation’s Space Corps to stop by a Federation colony. He fires back that this is the very center of the Hisago Plan, and demands to know if she's obtained proper permission. Domon sniffs that they wouldn’t be here if they hadn’t and Vega has to stop a frothing Azuma from getting in his face; Domon sighs that he was just stating facts.

Regardless, Ruri tells him that an increase in Boson abnormalities has been detected since the Shirahime incident – should it be the result of an issue with the Jump System, the nearby space routes and colonies could be affected. Thus, it was deemed that an emergency check-up was in order. Vega lightly suggests he think of it as having his electric meter read, but Azuma is insistent that the Hisago Plan is flawless.
Yamasaki attempts to placate the brigadier general, pointing out that maintaining peace in space is what the Federation is for and recommending that they do whatever they can to satisfy this obviously dutiful officer. The Hisago Plan, the spiral that stretches across space, and the futuristic transport of the Boson Jump… now’s a good moment to give them a thorough display of it all, no?

Plus, they can’t send them back empty-handed after coming all the way here – a show of magnanimity from the brigadier general. That’d be enough to satisfy Ruri’s crew and have them return to Earth at ease, no?
At length, Azuma concedes his point but he yells that we’ve a limited time to look around: “I will not tolerate the likes of artificial humans loitering about Artemis!”
Ruri thanks him matter-of-factly and gets to work.

Harry and Omoikane are busy following Ruri’s directive and slowly picking through Amaterasu’s data banks; Saburouta sneaks up on him inside the window bowl, eliciting startled yelling that he can’t just walk in here.
Why, isn’t their relationship past the point where Harry should be so prudish? As the kid panics, Eris laughs at how easygoing friends those two are. Yeah, they’ve even shared the ship’s bath and whatnot.
Harry’s all worn out, not having the energy to keep grumbling at Saburouta’s antics; besides, he’s busy with all the hacking that he’s doing by his lonesome. No way around it, as the Investigative Committee is obviously trying to keep something hidden from us.
Harry laments how Ruri’s out getting scorned by the station people but Saburouta reminds him that he'd better use the time the captain is giving them to hack away and figure out what's really going on. Eris agrees, figuring we don’t have a lot of time to hang around.

Vega’s a bit miffed with Azuma’s attitude towards Ruri but she doesn’t mind, as he didn’t say anything untrue.
Inwardly, Vega ponders how regular humans need to receive genetic enhancements to be able to endure Boson Jumps unaided; Ruri’s obviously got some modifications of her own but, rather than be crushed by it, she’s managed to accept it.
They’ve been at this for a bit and she figures Harry should have found something by now.

And, indeed, he’s found a block in the station that wasn't on the official blueprints. Saburouta figures this may be the reason for the Hisago Plan being attacked; when Harry checks it out, they find experimental results from Jump tests – on humans!
These were all done very hush-hush and they even have a list of several A-Class Jumpers. Just then, the windowing OS goes crazy, innumerable windows popping up which read "OTIKA". Saburouta seems to have some idea of what it means.

Amaterasu’s going through the same thing, with Azuma roaring for people to do something – what would happen if they were attacked now?!
Yamasaki seems to have been expecting this and quietly bids farewell to the general.

Domon and Vega are just as confused at the spam going throughout the windows. Ruri wonders if Harry screwed up somehow, but Harry reports that this is Amaterasu's computers essentially fighting amongst themselves.
He reports about the computer in the private block of the colony and this mess is almost like it’s trying to make its existence known to everyone around. Ruri ponders the letters "OTIKA", then realizes in shock that, backwards, they spell "AKITO". She announces that she's returning to the Nadesico, telling Harry sternly that the enemy is coming.

Meanwhile, Yamasaki’s talking to some hidden mook. They figure “he” is inbound but wonder if Nergal is also involved; Yamasaki doesn’t know but, regardless, asks if it isn’t a bit soon for the guy to be in that getup?
But never mind that. A certain group will be good to go in about five minutes, so that’s when they’ll be leaving.

Vega meanwhile is racing through the base with everyone aboard her bike, headed straight to the exit. Ruri asks if her Valkyrie can handle three people aboard but she says there’s no problem – in fact, this is pretty exciting.
Meanwhile, Ruri muses that she was correct in assuming Amaterasu would be a target – but what was that word? A code? Is it just a coincidence that it’s that name? Still, he – that is, they are supposed to be…

Mission 17 (Moon Route) – Your Memories

Shinjou pings an increase in Boson particles and, indeed, in comes the Black Ghost. Ginga and Hokuto aren’t too happy at the idea that it’ll attack, especially since it helped us the other day; Hugo points out that doesn’t mean it’s an ally, though, merely that our enemies were the same at the time.
Azuma decides to just go for broke and gives permission to attack the Ghost in and around the colony. Shinjou warns that this might result in the place getting damaged but Azuma cares not – no sacrifice is too much in order to destroy this target!

Ryouko deploys right then, figuring she can take on a lone enemy even by herself. Saburouta recognizes her right away, glad to see she’s as spirited as ever.
Ruri arrives, sending everyone to battle stations BUT also wanting the ship to wait on standby. When Amuro asks, she figures the Amaterasu folk would decline our help if offered. drat straight, Azuma yells, telling us all to stay put and watch.
Chibodee quips that the guy’s got a big mouth to match his size but still wonders if they’ll be alright. Amuro himself doubts that there's just one enemy mech, and suggests we all get ready to launch in case.

Meanwhile, Ruri tells Harry to try hacking into Amaterasu once more, with the keyword "AKITO". The kid doesn’t understand but Ruri’s hops in her chair to prepare for battle and doesn’t explain.
Ryouko figures the one enemy before her is just a diversion, but she's more than happy to be diverted.

Aestivalis Custom: Ryouko (Ryouko Subaru)
Pilot Skills:

  • Support Attack L1
  • Assisted Attack L1
Spirit Commands:

Unit Features:

Ryouko’s Voice Actress: Chisa Yokoyama (other known works: Noin in Gundam Wing, Sakura in Sakura Taisen stuff, Sasami in Tenchi Muyo and many more)

Like Saburouta but better in pretty much every aspect. Still suffers from the same deficiencies she suffered in the second half of W (in that PoD dictates she’s gimped for a long while) but, at the very least, the Distortion Attack pierces barriers so the lack of the Field Lancer isn’t that bad. Mind, that's only when she has the morale to use it...

Apply a wee bit of savescumming here to speed things up. You need to get the Black Sarana down to yellow HP or wait until turn four to keep things going. So, pop Invincible and Focus with Ryouko and make sure she connects with a Distortion Attack and evades the counter.

: …
: These moves are…! The hell… do I know this pilot?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_xILEtsGz8
You’re looking at 70/70% rates for her even with Focus and she WILL die if two clean hits connect. Hell, she might be oneshotted if the Sarana gets a crit, so make sure she enters the enemy turn with Invincible on.

Enemy Phase!

And here we go.[/i]

The Black Ghost purges its outer armor and Ryouko asks if her enemy thinks he's frigging Geki Ganger or something. The pilot gives out an amused huff before quickly Boson Jumping away – he might be headed inside.
Right then, a bunch of Battas emerge around Amaterasu, small weapons used by the Jovians during the Lizard War. Does that mean they’re the ones behind this attack? Or, Saburouta argues, it could just be some camouflage while whoever’s in charge digs up some buried treasure.
Harry detects someone else besides him hacking into Amaterasu; Ruri suspected as much, and tells everyone to wait just a bit longer. Azuma fumes, figuring the “Lizards” to be the ones behind the recent incidents and Shijou sniffs that he’s almost correct. Before Azuma questions him, the klaxons start blaring as Gate #13 is unlocked – a gate he didn’t even know of.
Shinjou did, however, and tells the brigadier that this farce has come to its end. He muses over this black machine and the fixation impelling it, finally declaring to Azuma that he and his people are the enemies of Earth, Jupiter, and all the corruption in space: the Martian Successors!

Vega takes them to be old members of the original Jovian Federation, in which case we might be looking at the start of a second Lizard War. Thing are certainly far worse than we expected, and now Ruri tells everyone to launch. We have to figure out what the enemy’s truly after.
The Nadesico itself will maintain position out here but she wants everyone else to enter Gate #13 that just opened and, once inside Artemis, head to the third partition. Ryouko doesn’t like seeing these guys pulling the same crap as their predecessors and decides to go with the flow since she’s way out here.

Mission Objective: Any allied unit reaches the target marker
Mission Failure: Nadesico, Saburouta or Ryouko shot down

No problems here, provided you keep a close eye on the aestis. This mission is also the first appearance of MX’s multi-layered maps; you’ll see, once we get to Amaterasu’s entrance.

It’s still their turn, however, and no one’s got any defensive measures. At least the Battas decided to gang up mostly on Chibodee.

Distortion Field means they can avoid being oneshotted unless a crit happens. Still, morale is scarce, so I elected to have Chibodee weaken some and just dodge the rest.

A couple Battas did go after Iino.

Not the best but I’ll take it.

Oh, and Chibodee learned Valor and Shield Defense L4 from all this.

Player Phase!

Rising Gundam (Rain Mikamura)
Pilot Skills:
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Shield Defense L3
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Trust (20)
  • Strike (20)
  • Cheer (25)
Rain’s Voice Actress: Yuri Amano (other known works: Keiko in Yu Yu Hakusho, Mary in Tales of Destiny, Alcyone in Rayearth and many more)

Rain’s the designate support unit of G Gundam and her stats are appropriately lower than everyone else’s. Mind, she’s not a bad pilot – just average (better than Roux and Roux is reliable). Same goes for the Rising Gundam, as it shares the same performance issues as the Nobel.
Of course, you don’t deploy her because she’s great by herself but because she makes Domon an even bigger powerhouse… later in the game. If you’re planning on focusing on Allenby or deploy all the main Shuffle Alliance guys, then feel free to bench her.
If you’re trying to save up deployment spaces, however, she’ll give you the better deal than Allenby, in my opinion. Just give her SP Regen, Concentration and something to boost her morale because her gains aren’t too good. Hit & Away can also be nice as her two strongest moves are pre-movement.

These Battas make for some very easy and reliable exp for the ZZ kids, just make sure someone softens them up first. And we’ve many Cheer casters, so here’s the chance to get them all some love.

Let’s see what Rain can do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt9Dl1tI75o
Oooh, almost. I think that’s about what Chibodee did with an equivalently weak move, so she really isn’t too far behind.
Like Allenby, the lack of a Super Mode is what really makes her lag.

So let’s speed ahead; the Battas are no threat, so insert a bunch of them being weakened, flattened by my lower level folks and yielding juicy exp.

Ginga, too, for the kill count.

Judau doesn’t care about your barriers.

And that’s that – once again, the mooks are cleared out in a turn.

Now, insert another two turns of getting everyone near Amaterasu’s entrance.

Once you’re ready to move in, select someone to move, place the cursor on the entry point and select 中へ to shift the view towards the interior. Your movement range doesn’t change at all.
The interior looks empty but when someone moves in…

Aaay, the Hokushin posse again! Seeing how the Kyoto and La Vie en Rose folks are here as well, it seems clear to Domon that they’re also in with the Martian Successors.
Ryouko wants to know what the hell these guys want so badly, and Ruri tells everyone to hurry to their destination.

These guys are still pains in my rear end, so I’ll have my better guys take point and see what we can do for the lesser folk. As always, focus fire because you want to reduce their numbers ASAP.

: What are you lot up to, working with the Giganos?!

: If the Martian Successors manage to apply the technology of the Martian ruins to their schemes, then we’ll have an even worse conflict than the Lizard War in our hands…!

Enemy Phase!

A few Hokushin go after Amuro. All the better for them to get Funnel’d.

This one guy, however, gets clever and go after Saburouta.

: If these guys really are remnants of the Jovian Federation, then the one behind this must be…
: Looks like this’ll be a bigger problem than I expected…!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbniymwZOC0
Of course a 30% hit would connect. Still, better than risking the flimsy Aesti.

Player Phase!

While Hokuto leaves the top guy hanging with 60-ish HP, in goes Ryouko for the Double Attack.

: Successors, possessors, whatever! Now that you pulled this crap, none of you are getting away in one piece!

: The Lizard War’s over! What the hell are you trying to pull after all this time?!

There goes one.

Here’s the second.

Boom. And Domon learns Valor! :getin:

Puru Two needs a wee bit of levels.

And the last one goes to Mondo, who gained a grand total of six levels today. He’ll be going back to the bench until it’s time to make that last hurdle for 25.

With all mooks dead, it’s only a matter of turning the corner and heading to the marked spot.
Along the way, we pick up a Repair Kit, Magnetic Coating and Solar Sail (grants 10% EN Regen)

When we reach the gate, Ruri belatedly greets with Ryouko – it’s been about two years since they last saw each other but they’re glad to see each one well. Ryouko apologizes that our team needed to help with this mess but it’s no problem; furthermore, Ruri offers to guide her through this secret part of the base.
Ryouko realizes in surprise that Ruri hacking into Amaterasu’s system but she calmly replies that the enemy was doing it too… plus, Harry’s the one actually conducting the hack. How cruel, passing the buck like that.
Regardless, Ruri has a favor to ask of her.

The Black Ghost shows up right then and it looks like getting in here was his objective proper. Puru Two doesn’t feel like he’s going to attack, though.
Indeed, he wrecks a nearby partition and opens a path deeper inside. Ryouko follows behind as he makes his way to some door; as he stops, she goes and plugs a comm wire into the Black Sarana – Ruri requested this, so she could speak to him.

After introducing herself, apologizing for having to get in touch like this but his unit’s window comm receiver is too protected for her to open a channel. So, she’ll get to the point:

: Um… Can you please tell me who you are? Are you…
: …Lapis, find the password.
: …
: There’s no time. Watch, if you want.

: WHAT?!

*Ryouko dashes inside.

: That’s… ID: Nergal ND-001 – the Nadesico A…!
: Nadesico A…?! The one from the Lizard War?!
: But… How?!
: RURI! You seeing this?!
: Ryouko…
: What is all this…?!
: Ryouko, calm down—
: What the hell is that?!
: Ryouko…!
: WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!
: Ryouko!
: Uurgh…!
: …The shape’s different but it’s the relic. The one from the Mars’ ruin that, during the Lizard War, was the target of both Earth and the Jovian Federation… The Boson Jump’s Black Box.
: That’s the actual essence of the Hisago Plan?
: Yes.
: Ruri…
: Huh?
: They must be rolling in their graves with this going on…
: Ryouko…
: What it this doing here…?!

*Beep. Incoming transmission!*

: It is all for the future of humanity!!
: Ah?!
: Admiral Kusakabe…?!
: Ryouko, your left!
: ?!

: UWAAAH!!

The Hokushin cronies are still up and about, with Shinjou proclaiming that the Hisago Plan is now theirs – as per Kusakabe’s orders. And since the core is all that matters, that means the best way to speed their hostile takeover is to explode Amaterasu. They begin setting off bombs across the place, warning all who are present to flee this sector.
Harry’s rather impressed with their chivalry and confirms to Ruri that he’s secured all the hacked data. She orders everyone to fall back and, of course, Ryouko doesn’t like it. The Sarana’s pilot says this doesn’t concern us and wants us to run off – “he” is coming.

That’s the actual Hokushin, mumbling about the universal spiral, growing as a Hisago vine all the way to the heavens. Will the Sarana’s pilot perish before his woman?
The pilot reels and Hokushin commands him, a fool who cannot let go of a woman who’ll never return to him, to look on to the relic.

The relic breaks open to reveal someone inside – Yurika. Ryouko’s put two and two together and figured out the Black Sarana’s pilot has to be Akito – that’s why he called out to her at that time.
Hokushin interrupts, blasting both of them; Saburouta then rushes inside, grabs Ryouko and blasts a wall open for them to escape. Ryouko demands he let her go, her friends are still in there!
He calls “captain’s orders”, so Ryouko calls Ruri and asks if she didn’t see and hear what happened in there: Akito and Yurika are alive. Ruri doesn’t answer, and Ryouko fumes that, again, they’ll just watch them die.
Ruri reels back at this but still calls everyone back and for the Nadesico to depart at once.

Elsewhere, Ryouko gets in Ruri’s face and demands an explanation as to why she ordered the withdrawal. Akito and Yurika were still alive, so what the hell? Did Ruri not feel anything when she saw the two of them again?
Ruri drowns her in ellipsis, causing Ryouko to demand her say something. She does, saying that they must first make peace with reality and, then, think of what they’re going to do. Ryouko’s annoyed at how blasé she is face everything but Ruri ignores her and commands Harry to relay the intel we got to Misumaru.

When Ruri asks, Rain conjectures that Yurika has somehow been organically fused with the Boson Jump System core, and is in some kind of coma. Could she go back to normal? Rain thinks so, considering she went through the same experience in the past.
So, what now? Ruri decides to return to Earth and rendezvous with the Nahel Argama. Ryouko wants to go after Yurika’s kidnappers NOW and Ruri argues that they would, were there no other enemies prowling about. Besides, without more information about the Martian Successors, it’s not a good idea to run off after them.

Beecha’s surprised that Ruri’s so calm but Judau tells him to shush: she’s the one hurting the most. Did he forget whose picture lies right atop Ruri’s seat?
And Vega figures Ruri understands that, as captain, if she’s seen wavering, it’ll affect the entire crew. So, she’s doing all she can to avoid crumbling. Ryouko quietly remembers how Ruri was the one closest to Akito and Yurika, who lived with them before it all went down.
Amuro says there’s only one thing we can do for her: act as we would normally and be ready to help when needed.

It really made me appreciate W's helping dilute PoD's gunk with Astray stuff and, of course, Gai Daigouji.

The Armageddon crew are exactly what could fix PoD. Hayato nabs Yurika with Getter 2 and Ryouma blasts Amaterasu, Successors and all, with a Stoner Sunshine.

Problem solved! :toot:

THAT would have been an interesting story development.

Honestly, I just skimmed it because PoD, from what I know about it from this update and part of the W LP I've read, is filled with a bunch of people yelling about something incredibly uninteresting to read about. :smith:

Rain's pretty cool though, just like everyone else in G Gundam!

And here's one part of PoD I don't like: Ruri's lack of any reaction to Akito and Yurika's situation. These were the people who adopted her as their own child during the events of Blank of Three Years and were believed to have died in an accident. Suddenly, Ruri discovers that not only are her adoptive parents alive, but one is fused to a Boson Jump system's core and the other is a revenge-driven reclusive vigilante. Ruri's response? Nothing. Just, ":geno: Okay then". It's almost shocking that the best reaction Ruri can muster for the two people who actually cared for her as a human being is barely a shrug.

I mean, as bad as Akito's character gets nuked from orbit by PoD, Ruri also suffers because the creators decide that she must be almost robotic in her actions, akin to something like Data from Star Trek. Or, for a closer anime parallel, Rei Ayanami. But no, the creators must turn the hugely successful break-out character into something that caters even more to the otaku who liked her and made Ruri popular.

"Most plans are critically flawed by their own logic. A failure at any step will ruin everything after it. That's just basic cause and effect. It's easy for a good plan to fall apart. Therefore, a plan that has no attachment to logic cannot be stopped."
This is a dumb nitpick, but isn't it Black Selena III?

Also, Gai really just makes everything better in terms of PoD. In W, he kinda became the new main character for PoD, if you look at it the right way, finding out why his best friend's become a mopey sad sack felt a lot more compelling than this nonsense. Plus the payoff at the end of the PoD storyline of having Akito and Gai doing the Double Gekigan Flare again is pretty great, and created the implication that Akito had just been really pissed, is all, and once he'd finally calmed down, he was still the same old Akito at heart. I guess what I'm saying is Prince of Darkness should always add Gai to the mix.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

We open back in the Skull Moon Base, and King Vega isn't pleased with Gandal over how the plans to take over the Earth are entirely behind schedule. Gandal apologizes profusely, arguing that dealing with the Grendizer has been difficult and, to make thing worse, there’s the Gulfer showing up…
The King doesn’t want excuses: there’s little time remaining for them. Radiation from the Vegatron ore is wrecking the empire’s homeworld faster than anticipated. Thus, Gandal must wrap up the situation here and conquer Earth ASAP.
King Vega tells Gandal that he'll send him a Gilgilgan, and orders him to use it to wipe out everyone standing in his way; he signs off, awaiting his positive report.

Balendos figures the situation is drastic, indeed, if the King’s sending that thing over. He’s heard stories of the Gilgilgan: a space monster captured in the past, feared from planet to planet. It’s strength is said to match even that of something called “Ragou”, which the Gulfer themselves captured.
Regardless, this is a direct order from King Vega so they MUST succeed. Bracky begs to be given command of this operation, confirming (with a stutter) that he can handle the Gilgilgan. He wants to make up for his past screw-ups and Gandal allows it.

And we’re changing our route to Chongqing. We’ve just received intel that the Giganos are on the move in northern China; Douglas figures the battle at Sai’s temple drew their attention.
So, in the interest of avoiding them, we’ll be taking the Yangtze River route.

A wee bit later, back at the bridge, Megumi reports an urgent call coming in right then, from the Federation’s Hangzhou base: the Vegans are attacking around Shanghai!
Have they decided to postpone their offensive in the well-equipped Japan… or are they attempting to draw us out, Haruka wonders? Daisuke figures it’s the latter as, judging from their past actions, the Vegans’ first objective is to crush antagonistic elements like ourselves.
Megumi relates how an unknown, enormous creature is taking part in the attack and wrecking the Feds. It’s not a saucerbeast, so Daisuke wonders if it’s another demonic beast like the Grangen – not something regular mooks can handle, that’s for sure.

Daisuke requests Bright that we head over there but Douglas reminds that his crew’s top priority is getting the Dragonars delivered – they can afford to waste time. Daisuke doesn’t like his idea that this is a waste of time but Douglas argues that we’re not the only squadron taking part in this conflict. If everyone decides to start acting not for their assigned mission but on their whims, the entire course of the war could go astray.
Daisuke threatens to go alone with his team if need be, and after a moment Bright orders our whole force to battle stations.

In Shanghai, the defense forces are already gone, so Bracky urges the Gilgilganto wreck the place and devour its metal. As it does, a mook reports units on high speed approach: two units.
Bracky figures it’s the Grendizer and Mazinger and is glad to see that they’ve accept his “invitation”. Actually, no, it’s another two units.

Tetsuya and Jun! Bracky’s shocked to see the Great Mazinger as Balendos said it was in the robot museum. Tetsuya figured leaving it there would only risk others trying to steal it again, so he decided it was better to grab it and get back into action.
Bracky wrings his hands, saying Tetsuya coming here will only mean his death – a threat Tetsuya throws right back at him. Jun argues that their mission here is to simply buy time for the Federation troops to evac the area. Tetsuya, however, refuses to flee in any way. If they don’t destroy the Vegan troops now, it’ll mean more damage to the town.
This isn’t what Bracky expected but the Great Mazinger’s Super Alloy Nu-Z and photon energy will make for some fine food for the Gilgilgan. They back away to let the monster get to it, though Tetsuya tells Jun that the priority is destroying the thing first.

Great Mazinger (Tetsuya Tsurugi)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L4
  • Sword Cut L2
  • Support Attack L1
  • Counter L3
Spirit Commands:
  • Strike (15)
  • Iron Wall (30)
  • Gain (20)
  • Invincible (10)
Tetsuya’s Voice Actor: Keiichi Noda (other known works: Fritz in LoGH, HAL 9000 in 2010, 002 or 008, depending on the version of Cyborg 009, and several others)

Take everything I said about Kouji and apply here, only with a boost in ranged offense and a slight decrease in defense. The Great Mazinger’s also a very strong, hardy Super and it has so many combined attacks. Unless you’re set on benching all the Toei bots, there’s no reason not to field him.

Venus A (Jun Honoo)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L3
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Cheer (25)
  • Trust (15)
  • Strike (20)
  • Iron Wall (25)
Jun’s Voice Actress: Yumi Nakatani (other known works: Crowley Hamon in MSG and some more smaller parts)

Maria, tank spec. Jun’s the hardier of the support girl archetypes and has pretty much the best offensive stats of the bunch. Still doesn’t make her good, as the Venus A sucks, but there you have it.

Let’s get to it.

: Damned lizard! You’ll help me get warmed up!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-weCwGyw3g
And this is our first instance of an actual Poison debuff! At the start of every turn, it’ll chip away 10% of the unit’s max HP.
Not too big but it lasts a couple of turns.

Off goes Jun to finish the job.

: This is the space monster Prof. Saotome spoke of…?!

The monster falls limp on the ground and Tetsuya sighs that it didn’t even serve as practice to get him back in the game. Is it really finished? Yup, it’s not moving and all that.
The Nahel Argama shows up and Kouji’s very glad to see Tetsuya up and about. His wounds are fine, too. When Kouji asks, he tells of the Vegans and their monster – despite its grandiose name, it was easy as hell. Tetsuya figures he ought to bring its carcass back for studies but Ryouma interrupts: the Gilgilgan is still alive!

Too late, the thing snags the Great Mazinger and, from our readings, it seems to be absorbing its energy. Quickly, it transforms and, watching this, Duke now realizes what they’re dealing with.
He tells Bright that it’s dangerous to stay here and asks him to signal the retreat – the Gilgilgan is a space monster that grows by consuming metal and energy. If we don’t approach this the right way, we’ll just make it stronger; thus, we have to retreat and rethink our strategy.
Bright accepts his argument, ordering the recovery of the Great Mazinger too.

Later, Misato reports to Daisuke that the creature is still in Shanghai. As he said, it’s devouring buildings and taking in electricity from the power lines. Akira asks, so Daisuke explains that, while this is his first time seeing the thing, he’d heard stories about in back in Planet Fleed.
Apparently it’s a bioweapon created by an ancient civilization, though details are slim. Regardless, it’s responsible for destroying several worlds. As a weapon, Haruka figures it’s possible someone is controlling it but, more importantly, Kaine wants to know what’ll happen if it keeps growing as it has.
It’ll just keep on evolving, continuing to devour as much metal and energy as it can. The Devil Gundam parallel is obvious to the G Gundam folk, though Allenby raises the silver lining it that doesn’t seem capable of producing Death Army-esque units. Doesn’t mean we can ignore it though.

Asuka asks Misato for a plan and she figures the only option available here is the old rubber balloon strat: fill it up with a ton of energy in a short period of time and get it to pop. To wit, that means everyone focus fire it down as, luckily, we’re loaded with units that use tons of energy in battle.
“What, isn’t that what we always do anyway?” Asuka throws her hands in the air. Should be easy, then, Benkei figures. Not quite, Misato warns and Kouji explains: if we don’t do this right, the Gilgilgan will process the energy of our attacks and power up a whole lot. Aqua’s analyzed the time it took for that to happen in the last battle and our window is about a minute. So, we need to take the thing out completely in that time (which is STILL what we always do).
So, we’ll need to get our attacks lined up perfectly and ready to go at the right moment; this means someone will need to bait the Gilgilgan into position. Tetsuya offers to do it as he has a score to settle with the monster.

: … I’m against it. I don’t want you taking part in this battle.
: What…?
: Ryou…!
: Care to tell me why?
: I will, absolutely. This mess here is all because of your hubris.
: Hmph… Those are big words for someone who came in only after it was all over.
: Still, if you’d actually cared to make sure the Gilgilgan was dead, none of this wouldn’t be happening.
: Excuse me…?
: Your showboating has worried me for a while now. It’s what led to you being injured in the final battle against the Mynenaes, too… (If you want to see how Tetsuya can get before he gets his head on straight, check the Alpha Gaiden LP)
: H-Hey, now! Enough of that, Ryou!
: He’s right. This isn’t the time for you to be bickering.
: …!
: Tetsuya… I will not fight with you unless you change your ways.
: That’s how it is, huh? Fine, I get it.

*Tetsuya leaves*

As Jun runs off after him, Misato sighs that she had a feeling someone would take Tetsuya to task. Daisuke complains that Ryouma went overboard but the guy leaves as well, saying he’s to see to the Getter’s maintenance.
Tap wonders if we should do something but Asuka tells him to leave them be. Kaine doesn’t want to but, then, could he convince Ryouma or Tetsuya? Kouji says that’s not necessary – nor is our concern. We’ll see, soon enough. Hmm…
Misato decides to return to the matter at hand. For the Gilgilgan’s bait, Light and the D-3 have analyzed the data we’ve been receiving and figured out the monster’s favorite “food”: plain iron. So, we’ll use a bunch of the stuff to lure it.

Ayato figures the RahXephon can play that role, carrying the iron… but, then, all that metal would keep both his hands occupied and leave him defenseless. Thus, Misato and Haruka figured the best way was to use a machine MADE of iron as bait.
But do we even have one of those? As Ayato points out, all our bots are made of special metals: Gundarium, Super Alloy Z and whatnot.
Actually, Haruka says we do have ONE. It soon dawns of Hayato and Sayaka what she’s getting at.

The Boss Borot, of course! Ayato’s baffled that the thing’s made out of regular old iron and Boss takes umbrage at his seeming disrespect. “No, I’m honestly impressed… The Borot’s quite something,” Ayato says. “A-ah, well… You’re drat right it is,” Boss huffs back.
But, yes, Misato wants Boss to play bait for the Gilgilgan and Daisuke is quick to argue that it’s too dangerous to send the Borot in alone. Still, Misato says she didn’t choose it simply because it’s made of iron: the Borot has also got good horse power, flexible movements and it’s quite easy to eject from. All this makes it the best choice for the role.
Hell, the thing’s even got a built-in toilet, Sayaka adds… though that’s not really relevant now.

: So, Boss, will you do it?
: We need your help to save Shanghai, Boss.
: Yes, I also want to see the greatness of the Borot.
: Ooh…
: We know you can do this, Boss.
: Please, Boss. Everything is in your hands.
: Y-You got it! Leave it to me!
: Are you serious, Boss?!
: Think before you agree to stuff! You can’t let yourself get carried away like that!
: Hey, you two listen here! This is IT! Everyone’s counting on us, so what kind of men would we be if we backed down?!
: Um… But I’m kind of having a bad feeling about this.
: Me too…
: C-Come on! You’re gonna make me lose my nerve!
: Nah, it’s all good. If things look bad, just bail out.
: Yeah and, when you do, go and feed the monster the Borot’s arm cylinder things.
: Who knows, it might give the thing a stomachache.
: Y-You… This is your problem, too, ya know!
: Well, I guess I’ll go and brief Cpt. Bright on the operation.

Mission 17 (Chongqing Route) – Gilgilgan, the Terrifying Space Monster

Boss deploys with a whole lot of bombast, spanking his rear end at the Gilgilgan and waving it over. It quickly works as planned and the monster starts chasing them.
Mucha and Nuke are freaking out but Boss keeps calling the thing to come eat all this tasty iron. Misato calls in and tells him to bring the Gilgilgan to a nearby iron mill, where she expects it to stop and start snacking.
Bright looks on with unease as Misato asks Boss to try and look as appetizing as possible for the Gilgilgan.

Mission Objective: Bring the Gilgilgan to the target area
Mission Failure: Either Boss Borot or Gilgilgan destroyed

Keep Boss protected even if you’ve upgraded him some, just to be safe. The Gilgilgan will always follow, so just move Boss over and beyond the target area and pull it inside.

Off he goes.

Enemy Phase!

And here it comes.

: B-Boss! He’s coming to attack us!
: Now is finally our time to shine! I’m at least gonna give him a good wallop!

Or, you would, were the thing not out of range.

Fast forward a couple of turns, as Boss outruns the Gilgilgan and it steps right into the target area.

That’s Boss’ part done, which means it’s go-time for everyone else.
As Kouji praises Boss for the good work (piece of cake!), Misato reminds everyone that the second we do even a little bit of damage to the monster, we’ll have sixty seconds to bring it down.
Which means, don’t hit it until we’re 100% ready.

Player Phase!

As Misato said, we can’t attack the thing willy-nilly. So, insert another two turns of me getting everyone close enough to gang up on it.
The good thing is that the Gilgilgan’s AI will still prioritize low HP units, so parking the TFO in its general area will make it the lone target of its attention.

Let’s get to it.

It doesn’t have Prevail or any relevant skills, so those 26k HP vanish real quick.

Megumi reports that the monster’s stopped moving and Misato orders everyone to finish it off quick. Problem is, Torres pings the Vegan army coming over right then. Hayato figures they came running once they saw their beastie get trounced but Ryouma tells everyone to ignore them and wreck the Gilgilgan lest we see a repeat of the last battle.
Bracky, meanwhile, is desperate to recover the thing – it’s King Vega’s after all. Jigura sniffs at Bracky’s usual incompetence and tells him to keep his priorities straight. If they can destroy our group here, the King won’t mind the loss of the Gilgilgan.
Granted, the thing isn’t doing too hot right now but Jigura has an easy fix: feed it Bracky’s Mother Burn and not only kickstart its recovery but also give it a power boost.
Bracky is a bit doubtful but Jigura doesn’t care. If he doesn’t believe, then he can do whatever he wants… and come back to base with another defeat.

Bracky sees he has no other option, so he goes with it and rams the Mother Burn into the Gilgilgan. In his escape pod, he tells Jigura to handle the rest and bolts. He will, though Jigura knows that Bracky is the one who’ll be held responsible for whatever happens here.
Benkei doesn’t know what just happened but Hayato sees it: they just gave the creature all the energy stored in that big UFO. Too late for us to do anything about it and it once again transforms.
Things just went from bad to worse and it’s now even bigger than before which, Haruka deduces, means we’ll need to feed it even more energy to get our plan to work now. Ryouma fears that everything we did was for naught now…

: It’s way too soon for you to be giving up!
: !

: The Great’s repairs are all done, so I’m here to join in on the lizard’s extermination.
: … Tetsuya, what I said before—
: We’ll talk later. The priority now is to beat the Gilgilgan… together.
: Tetsuya…!
: What? They made up already?
: That’s why I said we didn’t need to worry.
: Our strategy against the monster’s still the same, everyone! Once you’ve dealt even a bit of damage, take it out within sixty seconds!
: Roger that! Let’s do this, Ryou!
: Right!

I’ve a sneaking suspicion that Tetsuya pulling his head out of his rear end in record time here is a jab at how long that took to happen in Alpha Gaiden. Hmm…

And here’s the big, bad Gilgilgan. It’s bulkier, stronger and actually has some pretty decent accuracy. Still, without Prevail, it’ll go down easy.
Just make sure you Reals are protected.

That said, I’ll have my folks build morale on the Vegans just to speed up the process. Whoever hasn’t yet moved steps north.

Enemy Phase!

The enemy really doesn’t like Sai.

He can handle that attention, though. Two Minifoos are wrecked and he could’ve gotten more, had I not spared them.
All other Saucerbeasts close in, though Jigura tries (and fails) to snipe at Light.

Player Phase!

Now we get with the killing.

Two easy targets for Shinji.

The Jinjin Saucerbeasts have support defense, so double attacks are your friends.

Tap learns Faith/Friendship from his level.

Next!

That’s very dead.

With Akira’s help, Kouji wrecks another Jinjin and learns both Iron Wall and Support Attack L2.

The Gubigubis are still the bulkiest, what with their shields.

Just means they die slightly less fast.

Sai and Ryouma wreck the last Jinjin and Hayato learns Focus.

Light, Argo and Hikaru take another Gubigubi. Gaia Crusher, obviously, isn’t too good against aerial targets.

Now we just wait another turn.

Enemy Phase!

Said Gubigubi actually got a very lucky hit in on Light, making him the lowest HP guy around and drawing the attention of Jigura and Gilgilgan. He’s inside Hikaru’s EWAC, though, so there’s no risk there.

Player Phase!

: Here I come, space monster! I’ll make you regret ever setting foot on Earth!

: We have to do this…! Shanghai’ll be destroyed if we don’t!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-b4CMXvPQU
So, we’re seventeen missions into the game and I’ve still yet to see ANY enemy pop our EVAs fields. No, I didn’t even upgrade them past a single bar.

: Quick, everyone! We have to beat him this minute!

: Whatever we’re up against, I know we can win if we bring all our power together!

: Here goes…! We gotta have faith in ourselves and take this thing out!

: You blasted space monster! Even if this is your perfect form, you won’t have your way with Earth as long as my comrades and I are around!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTDKHWFWFwI
I actually had to go out of my way to get its strongest attack on tape. The thing only gains morale when it’s hit, so it WOULD have died before it reached 110 morale had I not used piddly weapons.

: Oi… This thing isn’t gonna go all Mecha next, right…?
: Stop thinking nonsense and start shooting, Kaine!

: Your rampage started with my screw up…
: And I’m going to fix that right now!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q6fXx7k_4g
And here’s the first of the Toei bots’ combined attacks.

And that takes care of that – the thing’s completely destroyed and with nary a second to spare. As Misato praises everyone, now it’s only a matter of taking out the remaining enemies.

Done. Only Jigura remains.

: So you’re the Great Mazinger I’ve heard so much about!
: And I heard of you, Vegans! How dare you try to use the Great for evil!
: You’re about to get a very up-close look at mine and the Great’s actual power!
: Good to hear! I came to this planet precisely to beat men like you!
: While I returned to the battlefield to crush worms like you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpEjWzjaiM4

: I will claim your head today, Duke Fleed!
: Even if I’m defeated, other warriors will keep on fighting to protect Earth’s peace! That said, I’d never actually be beaten by you demons!

:thurman:

More Prevail for Duke.

Jigura doesn’t really mind this defeat too much as it’ll be Bracky who’ll pay for it.
All enemies are dead, so Bright calls everyone back aboard.

Notable goodies are a Space Alloy Gren (HP +2000, Armor +250) and an Apogee Motor (+1 movement, +5 mobility).

Ryouma apologizes for what he said but Tetsuya doesn’t mind, knowing he meant well. Ryouma still figures he overstepped his bounds but Tetsuya admits that he was too conceited – he’s not fighting this by himself.
In this, Tetsuya remembered a lesson he learned from him and Kouji during the battle with the Mycenae: peace is something that can only be earned with the joint efforts of many. He and Jun will be officially joining the Nahel Argama team today, so he looks forward to working with Ryouma and co. The feeling is mutual.

Kouji looks from afar, glad to see that things ended just as he figured they would. Daisuke and Maria are rather surprised and she wonders if he’s precognitive as well. Nah, he just knows Tetsuya and Ryouma well and has faith that, in the end, they’ll always join forces to beat a common enemy.
Maria confesses that she’s a bit jealous of all this male camaraderie – that’s the essence of Kouji and Tetsuya’s unbeatable Mazinger tag team. And any such friend of Kouji is a friend in Daisuke’s eyes.
Kouji figures that’s perfect as the three of them can be a team to rival the Getter Team, then!

: We’re finally headed for Chongqing. And, then, it’ll be the end of our mission.
: I, for one, am looking forward to retiring from the military and enjoying that pension. It’s gonna be good.
: …
: What’s up, Kaine? Something bugging you?
: N-No…! It’s nothing…
: Well, I’ll be saying goodbye to Maggie soon, so I reckon I’ll give her one good polish for the road.
: Hm, you’re right. Circumstances might’ve forced us to start flying them but those girls have been with us through everything… They’re our dear mechs.
: Yeah... So let’s go and leave them sparkling ‘til it’s time to hand them over.

I fuckin' love 70's super robot anime.

Also, the ZAFT guys must have gotten real far out in the galaxy if the Gulfer managed to snag a Ragowe. :v:

We finally get to the Getter Robo G vs Great Mazinger episode where the Damdod's legacy known as Gilgiligan aka the bastard that is involved in nearly every SRW.

And if you are wondering yes the Damdod is the actual name given to the aliens that are rivals to the Vegans... I got all the Dynamic Hero Mangas on my computer and it's a fitting tribute to ALL the Dynamic heroes... if only they could of added Gaiking and Steel Jeeg.

There's at least 2 more combo attacks that we haven't seen yet.... and then there's the BEST one.
