News Jan 12th: We have a discord: https://discord.gg/f5HFH9H Empyrion Online is Are you tired of survival crafting games that limit to you a single small map with the same guys with rocks? Ever wanted to build a Small Vessel [SV] and then dock it with a Capital Vessel [CV], and warp both to a different system? Do you like building with your friends, raiding things, and basically everything that No Man's Sky promised but failed to deliver? This is why you need Empyrion Online. It is like a cross between Minecraft and Space Engineers plus templates and planets and GREAT PVP. (Space Engineer differences here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3793800#post465342763 ) Empyrion Online is currently Early Access on steam for Make ships shaped like anything! Our Moonbase An SV docked to a CV Here is a good list of tips for not dying: https://forum.empyrion-homeworld.net/t/illysunes-tips-for-not-dying-and-having-fun/307 Some Jargon: BA = Base, where you store all your stuff. Note that some systems start out with a heavy drone prescence that can kill your base, easily. HV = Hover Vehicles. These are a land-only based system SV = Small Vehicle. These are the first ships you will build to get up and fly around the planet. They use little fuel to fly and you can leave the planet. CV = Capital Vehicle. You need one of these to go between systems, with appropriate fuel from blue crystals. Starter Planet = You start out here, it is PvE, so player versus environment. You need someone from your faction to come pick you up in a capital ship if you're joining a group that is off planet. New Game screen Here are some recommended ships by people in thread (Get more https://steamcommunity.com/app/383120/workshop/ ): Entry level SV #1: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=704076144 Uparmored SV #1: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=720112307 Heavy Railgun SV #1: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=780340364 We are using proprietary CV builds that require you to be friends with us on Steam to get. Our recommendation is getting a copy of the croctopus, which is like 30k iron, I think. You can build starter CVs for as little as 1k though. Note: DO NOT USE NON-COMBAT STEEL Previous generations of CVs didn't use combat steel and that is paper thin. Para shows off a player model. To play with us, we are on HWS NA multiplayer server. They have a discord here: https://discord.gg/gJySAmf You have two planet choices: pick M32 or Easy PVP as it is near us but PVP, and only costs us 50 crystals to rescue you. Or go to Earth or Mars, build up, and wait for us to spend 200 crystals to come get you. We hide in deep space currently. Our Faction name is currently Little Bits Pirates [LBP] (littlebits!!). Here is a video of the Little Bits Pirates owning some dude while his team is being useless and getting SUPER mad. So glad he recorded it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIPShB9Br6s Note: You must activate Anti-cheat software to play on HWS NA server. If you get a pop-up error, hit continue a few times. If it continues, restart the software. Some people have had to turn off Anti-virus on that folder to get it to work consistently. Sometimes, a reboot helps. Talk to us on Camping the Stairs mumble for help if you get lost. Our bone yard of capitals we killed so far. (I suspect 20 total now) This capital has 8 hash marks on it. Screenshots of a previous server in album form: http://imgur.com/a/925kr We are on a 170 cap server called HWS NA @ https://empyrion-homeworld.net/. I have been playing this with some friends of mine and really been enjoying it. On the player limit, we have been playing on a server with 170 player cap: https://empyrion-homeworld.net/ So far in the last few days we have: -Destroyed the core on an SV near our CV and let it drift, making us light up like a beacon on the map and resulting in a couple people coming and obliterating our capital ship and all our assets -Came across a newbie that left his CV in orbit of a PvP planet which we promptly looted for everything of value, destroyed the core, and watched everyone flock to the now derelict ship and fight over what was left -Stumbled across the CV of a PvE faction that was new to the server that didn't understand that offline protection doesn't exist on this server. Destroyed the core and replaced it with ours. It's a pretty nice CV though I accidentally blew up the ammo room so there are giant holes in it. Still, the infrastructure is all in place and working nicely and it had a ton of mats on it. -Listen to a guy rage in global chat when his CV that he parked at a warp in point got destroyed because he left it there despite everyone on the server telling him that was a dumb decision So far I am loving this game and more people should play it. Server I am on is doing a wipe when 4.0 hits at the end of the month.

Highly recommend this game - and the Homeworld server (sorry OP) - the admin team there is very active and the mixture of pvp and pve areas does allow for a safety net so losing your capship/base/whatever doesn't knock you back into the stone age. At the same time all the 'good stuff' is in PvP so it's not too hard to find a fight if you're looking for one. The server options such as the web interface, 'orbital storage' and so on. Even if you have never played Empyrion, I suggest diving right into multiplayer - just make sure you start on PvE with breathable air. In many ways it's easier to start out in multiplayer than solo survival due to the marketplace allowing you to get a T2 drill and meteorites being far easier to mine than digging for ore in the ground. Plus I feel that Survival Empyrion pretty much runs out of steam once you have a SV as the NPCs aren't really much of a challenge. If you're interested and want to dive in - PM me and we can help you get started.

(These experiences are based on the HWS server as I have never played the stock version so YMMV) If you are new, the easiest way to get a ship is via the steam workshop: https://steamcommunity.com/app/383120/workshop/ Subscribe to a ship you like and it will show up in your blueprints tab for you to build. Some of my personal preferences for low entry CV's are: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=681434001&searchtext= https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=762365110&searchtext= https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=679967150&searchtext= Hint: If you see in the blueprint it requires 10 units of Zascosium and Erestrum it is probably because the ship has an advanced constructor on board. If you don't have access to those mats, spawn the ship in creative, remove the advanced constructor and replace it with a large constructor. Hold down right alt + o and save the design with whatever name you want. The large constructor is objectively worse but it will get you in your CV faster and the downgrade isn't too awful. The main thing you lose is the ability to convert raw ore directly to finished materials without the need to make ingots first. Have a fridge on your SV. You can turn raw meat into steak/salami in your small constructor but it spoils pretty fast without a fridge. This will let you stay out longer without having to travel back to your ship as often because as a smart person you parked your CV in the middle of absolutely nowhere and it is a pain to get back to it. There is no autorun/autofly. Sit down in your SV and open up power groups. Toggle each thruster individually until you have identified all your forward facing thrusters. Take all of those and put them in a separate group from the rest of your thrusters. You can now turn this group off and on. Unpowered forward facing thrusters means no force to stop you. Accelerate to max speed (110 m/s), alt+tab, and do whatever you want while you fly to your next planet.

Really a good 80% of the CVs on steam were built to be pretty on the inside and are utterly awful to live in and full off amazing design flaws like stuffing all the ammo boxes in one area on top of eachother and touching the exterior of the ship. Currently all CVs are awful at PvP - but there is no reason 1 shot should blow away 1/4 of your ship due to the ammo boxes exploding and render all your guns useless. You guys know a decent hardened SV for dealing with bases with a passenger seat? We tried to take on a base in a ship and we got messed up because the pilot disconnected as we approached. Nearly got stuck on the worst planet.

You can rip out the 2 seats in the front and strap on 8 more guns. I'll upload my variant when I get home - but it's absurd overkill in PvE. It's my go to 'mining' ship - as mining good stuff only really happens in PvP areas that means it's also the PvP ship. It is an absolute fuel hog as well but is able to dodge shots extremely easily and with ammo boxes and reactors spread out it can take 2-3 shots before being fully disabled - as in 2-3 shots from another 21 plasma ship. Also - I personally do not understand seats in SVs. I can't think of a good reason to not fly 2 SVs. Also you can queue one in the factor and have it be ready to spawn anytime if you get shot down. After all, only thing you really need to get away is some fuel. I try to have a garbage throwaway SV queued - something like : http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=704076144

Fuel is actually really trivial in MP as the metorites are very easy to mine compared to digging 100m down to get to a tiny deposit. I think we have nearly 2k large fuel packs. It's still a hassle to fly around with 200 fuel packs in inventory and have to refill mid flight over and over. Also I use this to queue ore smelting: https://sourceforge.net/projects/orphamielautoclicker/ and fuel cell manufacuring as having to click ores for 5 minutes is soul crushing - but that does it in seconds.

Resources are relatively trivial so it doesn't hurt much when you lose your CV/SV - bases...well don't build bases. Being able to access everything via P is pretty much required for good pvp designs and you will generally want to wrap your ammo boxes in several separated and sealed off boxes. Having an ammo box chain explosion blow up EVERYTHING in a ship is only funny when it's not your ship.

That being said, the ability to recovery in failure is FAR greater. The blueprint handling is excellent. The pvp is really good. The planet eco system is amazing. The graphics are very similar, but The sunrises in Empyrion are fantastic. The structures you find are challenging at mid level. I can't recommend this game enough at this point. Firos posted:I spent 200 hours in Space Engineers, how does this game compare? It's uglier and collisions are iffy. In survival mode it's focused more on survival and not getting eaten by monsters or killed by aliens and moving through progressively nastier planets to get rarer materials that are progressively more tedious to acquire. I'm frankly not a huge fan of the game in SP. In multiplayer it's focused on not getting killed by other players. There is actual legitimate faction vs faction combat - but the scope of it is limited by the netcode. So if you are expecting to see two of these http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=776040922 duking it out - it's not happening. Currently anything with large number of 'devices' lags the server in combat thus the server we play on has strict limits on the number of devices capitals are allowed to have - this is supposedly getting 'fixed' in 4.0. There are also major balance issues in PvP which are slowly being addressed. Currently building bases on PvP worlds is futile as they are too easy to destroy. As a result most servers are run as PvPvE where several permanent PvE worlds exist for people to be able to build a base if they are so inclined. Sane people live out of capital ships hidden away in deep space as essentially hiding is currently the only way to ensure survival. No amount of digging or number of guns will keep a base alive in PvP today. Capital ships are also underpowered - as in currently a capital ship will almost always lose to a fighter - capitals get a huge buff in 4.0 (4-10x the HP). Ship on Ship combat is also hampered by the fact that there is currently no easy way to repair a ship with a large number of missing blocks - most of the times even when we won a fight the ship would be scrapped rather than repaired. There is a repair bay block coming in 4.0 - but it is base only and does not repair outright missing blocks. It's not as bad as it sounds really as everything is built from blueprints and generally if you like a ship you will build a backup - you don't even need to 'deploy' it, it can stay in your factory ready to be spawned any time. There is also FPS combat but in ~40 hours of paying on PvP server I have yet to fire my small arms at another player. They're really there for shooting monsters and blowing holes in bases as far as I can tell. Really what it comes down to is that if you want to kill some people and take their stuff in an build your internet space ships game - this is it; it's not perfect but it's getting better.

Robert Red Rocket posted:Eh PvP sounds good, if I want to do PvE only I'd just continue my SP game. Well that'd make picking you up a bit harder - but I supposed we could still leave a care package for you on the PvE planet that you start on. I wanted to walk someone through starting out so that they do not make the same mistakes we did. I suppose I'll write a guide instead. Why Homeworlds Server? The reason we play on this server instead of others is the features that the server offers, the rules and the active admins. It is also one of the more active servers - although not as active right now due to many waiting for the 4.0 wipe. Core Features: Command line fixes for common problems - For example, it's possible for you to end up ejected out of your ship due to the game crashing - fine in space. Awful on a planet. You end up falling to the ground and your ship ends up floating 80 meters above you. On other servers you are SOL. Here you just do 'cb:getshipdown:id' and your ship gets pushed down to the ground. Want to just restart from scratch? Elsewhere you need to beg an admin to delete your player file - here just type cb:reset and done. Orbital Cargo Drone - This essentially acts like an unstealable stash for your items that you can deposit and withdraw items from. How often you can deposit and withdraw depends on your allegiance (more on that later). It can seem a bit cheaty, and it kinda is, but it does provide a much needed safety in the game. Without it you could literally be wiped out to nothing. Elemental Bank - This allows you to store your credits and earn 3% interest on the balance daily. Currently the money can be used to buy items from other players and NPC vendors. Rules that encourage and balance PvP - The server has a whole set of gameplay rules ( https://empyrion-homeworld.net/rules ) which prevent players from doing cheesy crap like building underground turrets or attacking people with monster CVs that cause so much lag that you cannot possibly fight back. The resource distribution is also fairly well balanced allowing you to live in PvE but ulitmatley forcing you into PvP space if you want to get rarer resources. Offline Protection is DISABLED - Do not use it! It's disabled due to how easy it is to abuse by building double bases and so on. Admin Support - If you lost your stuff to a bug or someone breaking the rules and can back that up with some screenshots, admins will replace your lost stuff and dish out punishment where appropriate. Web Interface - You get a web interface detailing your owned structures and an invader log that can show you who ganked your poo poo while you were sleeping. Auto Miner - It doesn't matter so much now as it'll be turned off for 4.0 - but is a way to have resources mined for you 24/7 as long as you fuel the miners with pentaxit. Starting out: There are multiple starting planets - but I would only recommend starting on Phobos due to it being a PvE planet with tons of water and breathable atmosphere. Guide your escape pod towards some water and dump your O2 generator into the water right away - you don't need the air on Phobos but you will want it when you build your space ship. Ask for someone to sell you a Tier 2 miner and some drill charges. Typing fa:survival will get you 700 space bux which is more than enough for both. You can also always sell iron as there is always demand for it. Once you have those build your motorcycle and go mine asteroids for materials and XP. Your primary goals early on should build growing pots (do not deploy them, they are for your CV) and build your SV. I suggest something dirt cheap like : http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=669926711 Now that you are ready to spawn a SV you need to understand the concept of factions settings in the game - it doesn't matter to you yet - but it will. All ships and bases that you build start out as "Private". This is super dumb and also super bad. Private ships show up on radar even if they are at the edge of space. They act as giant KILL ME BEACONS - as do any ships with no core. As soon as you spawn a ship you need to set it to Faction. In PvP areas be very careful spawning your ships. If you spawn your ship right next to your own faction CV - two things will happen: 1. The faction CV turrets will start to shoot your ship. 2. Anyone looking for a fight will start to fly towards you. In short - be extremely careful spawning your ships in PvP space. Never ever forget to set faction on your new ships. As soon as you have your SV you should fly out into space and go to the moon - there you can find some of the rare starting minerals like Sathium and Neodymium. Also pick up any and all blue crystals you see, you will never have too many of those. I suggest building this CV - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=782163898 (It's basically same as this http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=762365110, but ammo moved away from rest of the storage, stairs in hangar blocked of to prevent trivial access to the core and a few more turrets strapped on) Once you have your CV, you can go anywhere in the game world. Personally, I prefer to hangout in the Story systems - they have all the resources in the game and a decent but not overwhelming amount of player activity. You can find gold on Saturn but in smaller quantities than Gold Fed which has tons of gold - but also is essentially the place to look for PvP. Warping your CV into a PvP system is by far the most dangerous time. CVs are currently worthless in combat and will be obliterated by a PvP fitted SV. As soon as you warp in - fly away full throttle away from the system center ~30km out. Once you are 30km you can consider yourself safe. There is no reliable for anyone else to find your ship. I have run into 2 hidden CVs through sheer luck - but in general the odds of finding are so slim that it's not worth it. Currently the best way to find an enemy CV is to follow an SV home. So if you are being chased by an SV - do not ever run to your CV. Yes it has turrets, but it won't be able to kill the SV and all that will happen is that you will lose your SV and CV. PvP PvP is laggy. This is supposedly getting better in 4.0 - but right now expect lag. If you find an enemy base or CV you have two options - 1. Destroy the core and loot it. 2. Replace the core and steal it. In general, with base looting makes more sense and CVs we steal. You have no easy way to find the core - so you will have to explore the ship till you find it. If it's a design you have seen on steam, dowloading it and spawning it in creative is an option. Most designs are not made for PvP so often the core is easy to find and fully exposed. Also keep in mind that basic steel blocks are easier to blow up than armored doors. Your weapon of choice for this can be plasma cannot or rocket launcher. If you have neither - you can just ram your SV into the ship. If you do not have the resources to deal with it now but want to be able to find the ship again - build a beacon. What that means is an SV starter block with the core set to your faction. Nothing else nothing more. It requires 2 minutes to build in the factory and just needs 20 of the basic minerals. Finding the core on a well designed CV can be incredibly difficult but it's essentially the only way to loot it. Just keep blowing holes through walls and hope you don't blow up too much cargo. Playing with us Our current faction is 'SymphonyIsAwful' (It's a work reference, we'll probably change it for 4.0) - apply to it and post here. If you are on when we play we will pick you up from the starter word and get you a CV to play with and show you around. If not, after you are a member of the faction we will drop one off at the PvE world for you. Our only rule is that you do not needlessly endanger or squander our assets. This means: Do not spawn your ships next to our CVs. Do not take 30k of iron for your personal pet project if you aren't going to replace it. I probably forgot to mention a ton of things so feel free to post questions Ship Designs Most ships from the workshop are built with PvE in mind. They are often made to look pretty but are far from ideal in PvP. If you are using a Steam design for a CV, you should always check it out in creative first. There are several important things to consider: Core placement: If you are a jerk like me you will also want to move the core. Hide it somewhere - ideally something a raider would be hesitant to blow up - so stuff that almost always has good loot - such as a constructor. There are literally ship designs on steam with direction signs leading to the core. Ammo Box placement: Many designs seem to think that stuffing 4 large ammo boxes next to all the cargo boxes 1 block away from the exterior is a good idea. It's not a good idea. Do not do this. Ammo explodes. An ammo box has 25 HP. It will blow up in combat. Spread them out - ideally away from the things that matter - like your power generators and fuel. Bridge Placement: Build 2. 1 deep in the ship. Redundancy: In general, in good SV and CV design you will have two places for ammo, and two places for fuel, generators and oxygen tanks. Feel free to make areas totally inaccessible. In large ships you will be accessing vast majority of your devices with the control panel anyway. On an SV the only thing you need to be able to touch is the O2 station. FileNotFound fucked around with this message at 20:07 on Oct 16, 2016 |

Alright that all seems pretty neat, maybe I need to get in on this. I played a chunk of Empyrion but SP Minecraft-ishes have never been my jam so I burned out pretty quick.
