Sod it, I've been holding off for a while in the vain hope that I could come up with something better, but seeing as it looks like chapter 1 is drawing to a close, what with everyone dead, I'll toss out a new, revised theory. The culprit is the 19th human, Beatrice, and Kumasawa is her accomplice. The six corpses in the shed are easily explained by Kumasawa providing Beatrice with the shed key, and aiding in moving the bodies. For Eva and Hideyoshi, they forgot to set the chain lock, and the culprit used Kumasawa's master key to enter. After killing them, she kept Kumasawa's master key, and hid in the room. After everyone finishes investigating, the culprit escapes Eva's room, jumps out a window, and enters the boiler room through the back door, knowing that the relatives will soon notice the smell of Kinzo's corpse. On that note, let's backtrack to Kinzo, shall we? Whilst we know he's reluctant to open his door to family, if Beatrice herself knocked, he'd be likely to open it, right? The solution is easy if we assume this. Beatrice enters Kinzo's room just after Natsuhi, and notices Eva's receipt as it falls from the door when it opens. She then places it back after killing Kinzo, and takes his body to the boiler room. Back to Kanon, there's no issues here if we accept the 19th person. Once everyone holes up in the study, Kumasawa places the letter in order to split the group up. Once the servants hole themselves up in the parlour, Beatrice enters using Kumasawa's master key, and the two of them kill Genji and Nanjo. Beatrice then turns on Kumasawa, and finishes her off. She leaves a letter summoning Natsuhi to duel her in front of the portrait, then shoots her before she has a chance to react. Afterwards, the cousins arrive, and being unarmed, they die off-screen. Purgatorio is just that. Everyone is dead, and Battler's spirit is struggling to accept what happened to everyone. If anyone can find a hole in this, feel free to point it out. I'm kinda mad that I can't explain it with only 18 people, but I find it just as hard to accept that one of the corpses was fake. I wanna say that a 19th person on the island is slightly more likely than someone having a convenient spare corpse lying around to fake their death with, but that's just me.

To beat her, you have to expose the rules of this world and unravel them. For example, this can be likened to learning the rules of chess by watching a game. First, take a good look at the chessboard. Then, learn the movements and roles of the pieces. Then, look for the conditions required to win at her game. When you've managed to reveal all of these things, her heart will be exposed. After that, you can rip it apart or crush it as you please.  A spoon can be used for more than just drinking soup. You can use it to dig through the prison you're locked in, or as a weapon to gouge the witch's eyes out. Of course, you can also use the spoon to continually sip the watery soup inside your eternal prison. Don't get the wrong idea. I have no intention of becoming your ally.  I intend to enjoy this endless tale that Beato is going to weave until I tire of it. But that alone won't hold my interest. That's why I'll lend you my power. It's all so that I don't get tired of this. I am the cruelest witch in the world. Whoever the opponent may be, I'll certainly make them surrender. Even if it's Beatrice, the Endless Witch, alright...?

Hm. I am suddenly taken with the desire to read Higurashi; I mean, it's sitting right there in Steam, nearly finished, and this might be a good time to show support. Thing is, I've seen the anime (both adjectiveless and Kai, even Chiru, which was a mistake) and know all of the major plot points, would it still be worth a read, according to those who've read it?

I've never gotten all the way through it, but general consensus is that the Higurashi VN is far better than the anime. Just be sure to use a version that doesn't have R07's original sprites.

The Higurashi anime is much better to its source material than Umineko's anime is, particularly Kai. The originalofficial English translation for Higurashi was truely awful, but I believe they fixed it later. On the other hand, it was worth reading with the bad translation and is probably even better now, so do it if you have the time and the wait for umineko updates is annoying you.

You're ignoring some magical parts such as the bloody claw marks on Natsuhi's door and the magic circle (square?) on Eva and Hideyoshi's door, though. I'm certainly not saying this to dissuade anyone from making random theories, but you shouldn't just come up with a plausible human culprit and then rest on your laurels. I could lay out a more or less watertight Nanjotrice theory but obviously that can't be the answer so why bother. In fact for the love of god everyone please make random theories and post them, doesn't matter if they're just bits and pieces. They're pretty much the reason many of us are here for. Alternatively we can all just laugh menacingly at that foolish Battler struggling in vain as he ignorantly tries to deny the obvious and plain

When this update started I couldn't help laughing when Beatrice appeared, all I was thinking was "Greetings, I am Space Ghost." Anyway to add more theories for the smarter people, this update seems to suggest that Beatrice "possesses" someone, but maybe it's just suggestions from Kinzo and his servants to grab one of the first six sacrifices and brainwash them into "becoming" Beatrice. Although maybe that's not limited to the First Six victims, someone smarter could make something that holds water cause I'm really just eager to see where this crazy poo poo goes.

I actually have an idea for Natsuhi's door. If Beatrice's goal is to make people believe that the culprit is a witch, and she has access to Kumasawa's master key, then it makes sense. I imagine she was originally going to kill Natsuhi as one of the first six, opened the door to her room, then saw the charm and thought "Oh wait, this is totally a great chance to freak someone out." As for the circle on Eva's door... I've still got nothing. Everyone is accounted for at that time, so short of Genji and Kanon just being loving blind and not noticing it the first time, I seriously can't work it out. Maybe the culprit has access to some sort of paint that is only visible after it dries, found in Kinzo's study? Either Kumasawa or Genji work as the accomplice in this theory. I prefer Kumasawa because she can help corner Kanon in the boiler room, but Genji is better suited to carting the bodies around, I'll admit.

Seriously, though, I have heard the anime adaptation for Higurashi, particularly Kai, is as good an adaptation that could be reasonably expected of that work... but I have also heard that, due to the very nature of that story, some context and necessary exposition was missed. So I look forward to looking over all the stuff I missed the first time around!

Wormwood is one of the ingredients in making it. It may or may not be normal absinthe, or he may (or may not) be adding something mysterious to it, but the type of liquor is known and just being described in a colorful manner. For people want to get in on Higurashi the manga is also a pretty good alternative to the visual novel. As people said before the anime is not that good of a adaptation, you know you messed up a adaptation when you have to make a brand new arc to the anime because you took alot of stuff out of the first episodes that were important to solve the mistery.

Huh. I missed the description of Kinzo saying he apparently disappears for long periods habitually, and no one seems to know where he goes... Not sure what that means yet, because I don't have any further information, but does that mean he actually disappears from his study, without anyone seeing how?

It was probably built to worship the guardian deity of Rokkenjima. Even though I didn't know the exact meaning, I understood that it had a holy significance. Even in a place like this, I took just one more look around to see if there was someone who'd find fault with me being here. The only things I could see were the stormy ocean, Niijima looming in the distance, and the waves breaking against Rokkenjima's steep cliffside. I readied myself, timidly approached the small shrine, and took the mirror that was offered to that place. It was an old-looking mirror, dim and dirty. If it were an ordinary mirror, that'd probably give you a terribly bad impression of its value. However, since the mirror had been offered to this small shrine, it made you feel some kind of divinity. And I noticed. This was not merely a mirror. Even if it would have been nothing more than an old-looking mirror to a non-believer like myself, it was actually a mirror that had an important meaning.  ...No, this is not really a mirror. This is my life that I could not escape until today, and my fate. I'll break it. I'll break it, and seize a life from beyond the mirror. If I don't break it, my life will forever be a pair of facing mirrors. Nothing will ever change in the slightest...  She tempts me to take a bite of true wisdom. Maybe I'm already having a taste of that truth. Because I ended up knowing those maddening sentiments. Just as Adam and Eve felt compelled to pluck the fig leaf. By now, I must break this mirror. Until today, I had fought for many days. Inside my heart, the virtuous part of me and the part that sided with the witch repeatedly fought each other. And now, here I am. I look down on the mirror tumbling at my feet, broken in two equal parts... and after I made sure I've accomplished my task, I scream while looking up at the enraged sky.  A thunder roars once more. I'm already banished from paradise. That's why I have to struggle by myself in order to live. The witch said it. That's the sole element of the world. To lose it means to lose the world. Like how a canteen with a hole on the bottom can't be filled, no matter how much water you pump into it... I don't know how it could be called Shannon's fault, per se, since we don't know the specifics of this promise she made... but it is interesting that she went to the shrine and did something like a spell to be free of servitude. But I don't suppose I blame her after a sweet date like that!  I wonder if we're going to see something like Higurashi here, where the same essential event will be experienced by different charactes, thus providing more information (that wasn't an invitation to tell me, I'm just spit-balling). I also like the new presentation very much; allows me to see more of the sprites.
