I didn't watch the whole thing cause of his annoying persona, but in blackjack you can do a "split" if you have two identical cards, where you turn your one hand into two hands to improve your odds. Its usually only worth it on like 10+ i think? i dunno the odds if he just straight up raised his bet on a lovely hand, hes dumb as hell. blackjack is simple & casino dealers play by strict rules so you can pretty much play to the odds and make sure you dont lose more than 0.5% of the time

Double Punctuation posted:I don't know that much about BlackJack. Did he just double his bet on a super mediocre hand and get surprised when he lost? He doubled on 11 when the dealer had a six up. This is actually a really good situation to be in. The most common card in the deck is worth ten, so you're ideally looking to turn your 11 into a perfect 21. And, since the dealer has a six up, you assume the dealer's other card is a ten, giving them 16. Dealers must hit on 16 and stay with 17 or above. So, 16 is kind of the sweet spot, since the dealer has to hit and will probably bust. The dealer even has to hit if they are already winning or tied. So even if you end up with a bad hand there is still a good chance the dealer will bust. So, his double down was completely correct, it just didn't work out. Not trying to start a derail or anything but isn't blackjack a straight up numbers game with everything riding on your maths and stats abilities? Aside from card counting (illegal) and bluffing etc (pointless against the dealer)? And if so why does anyone give a poo poo about regular casino blackjack?

Don't even need to count cards, you just need to memorize the odds table and have a friend who also has; playing alone, the house has a slight advantage that is negated by having a friend play alongside.

Casino dealers and security personnel are trained to watch for all of the common strategies, though, and if you do it long enough someone will come and tell you to move along to a different game. Craps is another game that you can statistically break even on by following the right techniques, so by setting aside your money every time you win you can slowly eat into the casino's take. They'll either kick you out for this, or the house will have a few special rules specifically designed to eliminate the break-even strategies.

yea theres a rake still or a limit or something all the games have clear limits & methods that can be played, but the house puts an extra 0 or whatever to maintain the edge

That's the nice thing about poker. You don't play against the house, so the house doesn't have any edge. They just take a cut from each pot. I don't gamble, but if I ever were going to, I'd learn to play poker and go with that.

They don't give much of a poo poo if you're spending money in other places, playing the little tables, or bringing friends who suck. When you're a new group of players who sit at a high limit table suddenly taking $25-50k each, not paying employees or buying stuff, then they get irritated. Single counters typically are smart enough to not make it too obvious, or spend somewhere else in the property. Outrail posted:Not trying to start a derail or anything but isn't blackjack a straight up numbers game with everything riding on your maths and stats abilities? Aside from card counting (illegal) and bluffing etc (pointless against the dealer)? Card Counting is not illegal, and repeat counters will consistently try to get staff to admit they're being kicked out for counting. Casinos just install multi-deck shufflers and put low-deck Blackjack tables in higher limit areas, effectively eliminating the problem. I was a security officer at a casino resort on the Strip.
