To bring something up from a couple days ago that seems really relevant with the Roger Stone info, Jon Ronson's new book is basically all about the link between Stone, Alex Jones and Trump and how Stone is playing both Jones and Trump.

Keynesian economics doesn't give a gently caress what the project is; moralizing over what that project is secondary or tertiary at best. Building a giant wall that does nothing will stimulate the economy, it's just that we can do some actual good with the same amount of money.

I'm not saying it won't stimulate the economy, I'm saying it's a dumb way to stimulate the economy and, in my book it is immoral to choose not to help people when you easily could. (By, say, dumping money into something useless instead of building hospitals and schools, repairing infrastructure, etc.)

Just because you're not directly hurting people by ignoring other issues and projects that could be tackled for the benefit of people doesn't mean you're not indirectly harming people.

To add to the calls for public transit expansion and high speed rail, making sure every public transit system in the country doesn't go boom is also important, and even highly renowned, relatively competent systems like the NYC system are still never going to be fully in a state of good repair at the current level of funding, DC's is still catching on fire, LA's has to go desperately beg voters for cash this year, etc., etc.

Also, don't forget to come talk about transit stuff with us in the Transit Politics thread, dear USPOL goons! (Urban planning stuff is also covered.)

Kids are often unaware of the connotations of what they repeat. I can't remember where the article was, but a 6-year old kid was repeating Trump memes and his parents told him what they actually meant. The kid got really angry that his parents hadn't said anything earlier because he didn't know what he was saying, he just liked that the phrases sounded strong.

If you want you can talk about what those phrases mean in a quasi-neutral way to him, and ask him what he thinks those mean. But since he's not your kid, don't be surprised if his parents find out and you get some backlash.

I'm sure he can think for himself so long as he has all the information and facts. And that's what's really important, and what you might be able to provide! :)
As I said, I moved across the country so I can't anymore. :( but I did when I was there, and it wasn't super effective. You could see him thinking about it, but he just has so much of it dumped on him every morning by Fox news that it may overpower what I said.

I super hope he does think about it fir himself eventually. He probably will, but I'm not as certain as I would like.

I see the wall as a kind of McGuffin. It's a childlike, easily visualized example of his anti-immigration policy which a 10-year-old can understand. (And they do!) But I'm also sure he'd love to build one and hire his own company to do it.

It's still a McGuffin, because it's a vague and generalized object he's working toward. But it mainly functions like a shiny trinket he can dangle in front of his followers, giving them direction. It's a literal "line in the sand" to the rest of the world.

Oh yeah. Yeah there are a lot of problems. Though to be sure, walls already exist on the U.S.-Mexico border -- about a 1/3 of the length. It's in the middle-of-nowhere parts of Arizona and the like where it's difficult. Not impossible, though also quite pointless, as most people who immigrate unlawfully do so by overstaying their visas.

The most effective means of border control is the Border Patrol. But what's great about this? Migrants just walk up to them and request asylum.

Keeping the voters obsessed with an incredibly oversimplified idea of complex ideas with nonsensical goals is a core of the GOP platform. Their voters crave the quick, easy solution and their politicians promise them that.

Trump is hosed. His paths to win 270 are so narrow that he has to win every single tossup state and a democrat state as well. And more states are becoming tossups as time rolls on.

Even if he loses Utah's 5 (6?) EV's his campaign is sunk. He just won't be able to make it to 270 without a miracle.

To contribute a bit to infrastructure chat, besides fixing the bridges and roads, we could run high speed fiber across the nation. We could also make a serious move to put the power lines underground.
But hell, even just a serious bridge and road project could seriously help the economy.

Also forgot about high speed rail.

My theory is that Donald Trump has an IQ of approximately 80. "I know you are, but what am I?" style of dialog. It allows him to connect with a large majority of the US population without 'talking down' to them.

This is definition of being a pawn, regardless of who is playing the game. His family is going to ruined for generations, if its any consolation to Bush et al.

Edit: Wikipedia (lol) has his first bailing-out listed as elementary school which totally jives with sub-par IQ. He went off the rails as a 13-year old and never progressed beyond that point of mental development:

Due to behavior problems, Trump left the school at age 13 and was enrolled in the New York Military Academy (NYMA),[16] where he finished eighth grade and high school.
