cargo cult posted:good job getting out. the closest i've been to a situation like that was when my mom worked briefly in albanny or schenectady or something and it sounds exactly like that, except that was back in the early 90s so i cant even imagine what its like now. also upon fully reading the article i feel bad that she was harassed at work and got hosed up from it, but the rest is her own doing. Upstate NY is probably a paradise compared to Fayette County, PA. It's REALLY loving WHITE, like 93.3% according to last census. Most non-white people live in the projects of the two largest towns. I lived in a township outside one of those towns, so I literally did not have a black classmate or teacher until I got to 7th grade and the junior high school. When I was in high school, a teacher told us that Fayette County was among the worst in the nation for teen pregnancy, child poverty, adult illiteracy, and a whole lot more. I doubt it's gotten better since then. I also wonder if the two drive-in theaters in easy driving distance contributed to the teen pregnancy rate, but that's for some brave sociologist to study. The dominant industry was mining coal, then baking it in specialized ovens so it was turned into hotter-burning "coke", then barged down the rivers to the Pittsburgh steel mills. This worked out wonderfully until the 60s and 70s when the steel industry collapsed. Pittsburgh eventually resurrected itself as a medical and tech city in the 21st century. Absolutely loving nothing has stepped in to fill the void in Fayette County. Fracking is a big thing now, but all the trucks hauling waste-water from the sites into gigantic holes in the ground that I'm sure won't corrupt the aquifers in any way are ruining the poo poo out of the roads. I expect the area to look like a Mad Max wasteland in fifty years. The reason I'm typing all this poo poo up is so you understand what drives people like the WaPo article lady to Trump. Everything around her is dead or dying. She can't adapt. She feels she can't get an education and start a new career. All she's seen for decades is everything around her going to poo poo, and nobody in government has done a loving thing to help her, so BURN IT ALL DOWN. She's got mental health issues, yeah. But there are a lot of otherwise "sane" people there struggling. Opioid abuse is skyrocketing. Houses are getting robbed in broad daylight by people looking to fence stuff for their next high. This year they busted over two dozen people for distribution in one sting, but they'll be replaced. If I were a high school student there now, my motivation would be to get into a college several hours away, work my rear end off, graduate, and never loving look back. That makes it an even bigger shame the public schools there are abysmal so only a relatively few students get that chance. What's an 18-year old HS-grad gonna do there if they're not going to a college? Work at WalMart? Get a CDL and haul that fracking waste-water? Places like this are hosed, and so are the people living there. I don't know how to fix it.

Their only arguments are abortion and religious freedom, the rest while disgusting to them in their mind pales compared to Hillary and he evil. She's pro abortion and for suppressing their religious freedom to discriminate, hence the Trump vote. But it makes them hypocrites since they are value voters. There's a lot of discussion going on in regards to this issue, it's pretty interesting if you follow that sort of thing. Some major leaders in conservative circles are basically arguing that it's foolish to try and change the culture by changing the court, however long that lasts for. In other words, the voting block of evangelicals is basically dying and that isn't a bad thing from their perspective.

the talent deficit posted:rick wilson has been shouting about the dangers of trump since trump announced. he was way out front on calling him a facist baby. if anyone has got solid rumours of trump scandals i expect it's him rick wilson initially came out against trump because he thought he was an unelectable clown damaging the gop, not because he thought he was a fascist. Politico article by Rick Wilson, July 22, 2015 posted:Don’t be fooled by Trump’s double-digit lead in a new poll: He is not going to win. He’s not going to win the primary. He’s not going to win the general. He’s not going to win a third-party bid. Sure, he can damage the GOP ticket badly enough to guarantee Hillary’s election, but he can’t win. He’s too flawed, too liberal, too undisciplined and too afflicted with verbal dysentery when even slightly provoked. He lacks the fundamental presence and gravitas of a commander-in-chief. people like rick wilson because he has a strong twitter trash talk game and does the same on panels, its not like he has any special access to information whatever thing him and liz mair are talking up is going to be a big disappointment https://twitter.com/LizMair/status/785468123130523648 https://twitter.com/TheRickWilson/status/786422745764466688 https://twitter.com/LizMair/status/786418574394920960

skaboomizzy posted:Upstate NY is probably a paradise compared to Fayette County, PA. Don't cut manufacturing and labour jobs while at the same time increasing education costs and make it more difficult to get into college. It's not rocket science, and it pisses me off. Why do we have so much crime in black communities for example? Maybe, in part, because of poor education due to funds being cut. Plus, a poor social environment caused by outsourcing of high paying factory work, which has led to drinking, drugs and crime increasing in the community. Something I read before really stuck with me. We choose to have a middle class. It is not a natural component of free market capitalism. The natural state is an environment like Charles Dickins' England, with masses of poor people living in terrible conditions being oppressed by owners of capital. The plutocrats of the West have forgotten this and they are doing so at their own peril. It's going to get much worse before it gets better.

It's not rocket science, and it pisses me off. American economies are driven by market forces, so it's not like there's a realistic politics (in the current environment) which can correct for industrial abandonment outside of the cities. Even if educations were cheap as free, you also run the risk of creating an education glut where people can't put their degrees to use, because the job market is shaped by market forces which are abandoning American labor in favor of more profitable foreign workers. The liberal response to this crisis is to encourage young entrepreneurship, but I'm not so sure that's going to create anything other than another Silicon Valley bubble where massive amounts of speculative capital are being pumped into projects of specious utility.
