Another dull day in the air. This is a normal days attack, but I don't normally bother to show it.

It seems that the British troops are as worn down as we are.

I need to tell the commander here to stop and take a rest.

This was a futile attack, and only served to waste a massive 100 squads of Chinese reinforcements. I shall do a limited counter attack tomorrow.

A few good hits on attacking enemy units there, but at least I thought I should fill you in on the invasion of New Caledonia. We are currently building airfields at Ndeni and Luganville to support our attacks, this is taking some time, so its going to be a while before the invasion gets off the ground.

The plan is to now land at Koumac and march south, this lowers the chance of coastal guns ruining my invasion fleet.

I'm afraid in the long term you will lose more ships trying to deliver supplies to New Caledonia just to keep the air cover up, while the Allies switch to a shipping lane further south with no ill effect to their situation

Maybe so, but Japan wins this game on points, and new caledonia is points.

Soiled Meat
New Caledonia is only worth as many points as there are bases, and that's not that much. Unless Grey tries to burn supplies on base building, which would mean pulling more freighters to serve in dangerous waters

Really a better strategy would have been to focus all these smaller task forces to overthrow Port Moresby, which would be both more strategically valuable, harder for the Allies to take back, and less risky to keep supplied.

Eastern Front: A Russian relief force is reported to be within sight of Stalingrad.

Guadalcanal: The Tokyo Night Express pays another visit to Henderson Field, destroying just over half of the available aircraft sitting on the ground. Another 4,000 men are dropped off at Tassafaronga, west of Lunga.

New Guinea: The Australians attack Japanese positions in the mountains, but ends in a stalemate.

Can't Port Moresby be shut down by B-17s based out of Australia?
Plus it has a really small port so unloading supplies takes a while.

Once it's taken, it's relatively easy to keep in resupply through Buna. Troops just sitting around don't consume much supply. Fighters based at Buna can also inflict rather severe attrition on Allied bombers before the Allies get a decent escort plane.

Oh look, I still do have subs!

The counter attack here does well, with a bit of rest I think we can make ground here.

We continue to hold here, but the rest of my troops are getting close to entering the city.

I hope the allies are planning something big, my own plans need airfields built first! Its also getting risky to raid with the carriers, as most places the Allies have left will have good air cover!

We take some heavy losses in a bombing run.

There wasn't even any interesting ground combat today. But there is some news!

Hankow is now completely surrounded. I shall launch an attack tomorrow to begin wearing them down – it will be bloody, but its a necessary step.

American newspapers continue to confirm kills. We've not sunk much this month, but we've added 12 ships to the kill total for the loss of only one so far!

A very interesting book in the context of this LP

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8608998-sunk

quote:

Sunk: The Story of the Japanese Submarine Fleet, 1941-1945 by Mochitsura Hashimoto, Edward L. Beach (Introduction)

[quote]Author Mochitsura Hashimoto was one of the few Japanese submarine captains to survive. Shortly before the end of WW2 he inflicted the greatest single loss on the U.S. Navy in its history, when he torpedoed and sank the USS Indianapolis -- soon after it had delivered parts for the first A-bomb on Hiroshima to the US base on Tinian, ironically enough. The title, however, refers to the fate of the Japanese submarine fleet. It's a tale of the bravery of doomed men in a lost cause, against impossible odds. The kaitens or human torpedoes were not the only submarine kamikazes: the whole war in the Pacific was suicide from the start. So why did Japan go into the war? Hashimoto is sharply critical of the recklessness and unpreparedness of Japan's top brass. With an introduction by Cmdr. Edward L. Beach, author of the best-seller "Submarine!"
I'm about half way through and there are some truly :dogbutton: moments. Like when during a night action and surrounded by enemy destroyers a lieutenant attempted to jump into a subs deck mounted patrol boat with a samari sword to continue the fight only to end up hanging onto the railing with one hand in the rough seas. :pirate:

The Japanese are certain that Henderson Field is out of action today, and attempt to prove this by landing troops on the island chain in broad daylight. Despite their presumptions, dive bombers are launched from a rough, but functional, runway. 3 transports are lost or stranded. The Japanese 17th Army draws up plans for a massive attack against US troops at Lunga, set to begin on the 18th.

October 16, 1942

Aircraft launched from the Hornet carry out a raid on Rekata Bay, Santa Isabel, where they manage to destroy Japanese arms and ammunition depots near Tassafaronga. In preparation for the offensive on the 18th, Japanese artillery begins increases the intensity and, more importantly, the accuracy of their fire against US positions.

Okay, so that went as badly as expected. At least they will have a hard time replacing those losses.

Intel has something interesting. Is this the troops form Port Moresby being used offensively?

Lets send out the Kiddo Butai to find out. I sent the Kido Butai out on a raid a couple of days ago. But the Kiddo should be enough.

Screw it, go big or go home.

That 15k loss isn't nearly as bad as it seems, mostly disabled. The defenders are low on supply so just keep air bombing, bombarding and rest up and you'll take it soon enough.

The Chinese barely have any supplies even when they're not surrounded and cut off, so starving out the last little bit would have little effect, let them dig in more, and take time/pixelmans that would be better spent elsewhere.

We start the day by hitting a troop ship.

It looks like those ships we sighted yesterday have entered Milne bay. This may be a bad day for them.

They have a cruiser at least.

A hit at last!

Then the main attack goes in. This devastates them.

The afternoon attack continues the murder.

We're hit hard at Imphal – losses are pretty even, but they have better supply routes.

Well, lets see how many of those ships we're claiming for today! Their troop losses have jumped from 11,331 to 11,516 – so those were some densely packed ships!

Only four, but we have carriers – and Battleships – to hit them again tomorrow.

It depends. The point value of destroyed land unit devices depends on its nationality. 12 destroyed Filipino or Chinese squads = 1 point, 6 destroyed Soviet or Japanese squads = 1 point, and everyone else is 3 destroyed squads = 1 point.

The sheer quantities of automatic and anti-tank weapons that the allies begin throwing at their troops makes one squad have a lot more punch.
