Can you get banned for using a VPN to unlock a game early on Steam? What's the Australia release time in EST? Noon Thursday?

In theory yes, in practice I've never heard of it happening. BUYING in another region, yes. Unlocking, I don't think they give a poo poo.

Is there immigration in the game, or just tourism. Been thinking of Canada as a civ a bit more and an ability based off of some sort of culture siphon or multicultural bonus might be interesting. A country not known for any real strong culture of its own with tools for a cultural/tourism victory.

Funnily enough I did that when it was released too.

I've been playing Civ IV, it turns out I have a much easier time with that game when I just whip a dozen axemen by the time I have my second city and wipe out my nearest neighbor so I have half a continent to play with. Also learned: specialist strategies are super fun and nukes are really mediocre

Thought up how a Persian civilization led by Shah Ismail could look based on stuff I've gleamed about the game so far and how leader and civilization bonuses seem to work.

Persian Civilization

Civilization Ability: Achaemenid Legacy (not quite sure about the name for this one...)
Unit maintenance for all cavalry units reduced by 1 gold per turn for every 2 units.
Gain +1 economic policy slot regardless of government type. (These two together might be too strong, but I think Persia should be able to field large cavalry armies rather easily)

Unique Unit: Sparabara
Replaces the Archer.
Has increased defense against ranged attacks and a melee combat bonus against cavalry when defending. May be combined to form a corps regardless of era.

Unique Infrastructure: Caravanserai
Replaces the Commercial Hub District.
Receives adjacency bonuses from Desert and Grasslands. Provides Housing.

Shah Ismail

Leader Capital: Isfahan (his actual capital was Tabriz but Isfahan is the capital most associated with the bulk of the Safavid Empire's history)

Leader Bonus: Receive bonuses to religious combat, city happiness and espionage defense if following different religion than strongest neighboring civilization (city within at least X tiles I would think), proportional to the percentage of the population that follows the state religion. Based on the conversion of Iran to Twelver Shi’ism by the Safavids and how that was used to strengthen Iranian (or Persian in Civ terms) national identity and territorial integrity.

Leader Agenda: Desires different religion from strongest neighbor, dislikes neighbors, likes and will attempt to improve and form relations with more distant civilizations. Based upon rivalry with the neighboring Ottomans and his overtures towards the Habsburg for an alliance against the Ottomans, as well as later Safavid kings' continuation of that policy along with closer economic and military ties with the West such as with England later in the 17th century.

Leader Unique Unit: Qizilbash. Unique Renaissance era light cavalry unit. Requires horses. Has a movement of 5. Ignores movement penalties for hills and provides bonuses to religious units (Missionary, Apostle, Inquisitor) stacked with them (also allows them to move at the Qizilbash movement rate).

Any Canadians here use GMG before? Is the price actually in Canadian dollars or US dollars? If it's in US dollars I'd be paying more even with the deal.

It's US. But how is it more expensive? On steam the game is 80 Canadian

As crippled as it was, especially at release, probably 900 of the 1000 hours I put into Civ V were still in multiplayer so I sincerely hope they get it right this time around. Them leaving it this hilariously late is a tad worrisome though.

I'm a Canadian who bought it on GMG a while back for a discount, I can't remember the discount exactly, but it totaled to less than I would have spent on steam outright.

Using a VPN to get another country's better pricing somewhere: Oh gently caress yes, that's dealing with money and companies do not like that. Steam will drop the hammer on you.

Using a VPN to unlock a game a few hours early: Perhaps technically an issue they can get upset with you about, but no one really cares one bit. Steam gives minimal shits about the fee-fees of retail stores and even then Civ isn't the kind of game that would upset people when you release spoilers (like how Mass Effect all comes down to what color explosion you chose at the end). Besides there's the very real possibility of some guy who's on vacation or a business trip who really is in Sydney that enjoys his temporary relocation to boot up Steam and play some Civ in hotel room a bit "early".

I'm the opposite I find. As another player who mostly plays multi-player in Civ, that they are showing it at all so that people can evaluate it, even in a dev stream, is real good.

I'd be much more worried if it was like 'whoops something went wrong can't show multiplayer have fun with it at launch though!'

Eh, they were mostly with 2 players so turns weren't that long, although 99% of them were also on Marathon.

Also you joke, but three is a fairly accurate estimation of how many games we actually saw all the way to the victory screen over the years.

This is why I've tried to avoid learning much about the new mechanics and I'm pleased that they've shuffled a lot of things around, playing Civ2 or SMAC completely blind was a lot of fun (and occasionally frustration).

In a word? Empty. The game is there, but there's nothing in it. Rather than having major differences between leaders and civs a la AC or Civ 5, all the changes are tiny and incremental. The game doesn't feel like there's any replayability to it at all.

It was fun the first pass through but once you realize that you pretty much always see the same events and the AI aren't much different it gets stale. There aren't enough nations and they all feel the same. I felt no reason to go back after my first play through.

This is pretty much what it boils down to. The unit "evolutions" were cool but they sucked all of the depth out of pretty much every other part of the game.

Part of the selling point of the game was the hundreds of possible civ customization possibilities so you would have endless replay potential, but when all the differences are so negligible what you choose doesn't really matter the game wears on you fast.
