A shame it's only the first time you kill a codex that it drops the Avatar progress. Those things are annoying enough to warrant a drop every time.

IDK, plasma snipers with bluescreen rounds drop them in one shot reliably. With Serial, you could have pods of only codices and nobody else would have to do anything.

Or a close range plasma shotgun, ideally with hit and run and/or implacable. That's consistently been my answer to codices and it works pretty well.

In my experience, codices are annoying but not threatening and usually a lower-priority target.

I'm also not a fan of bluescreen rounds. They're useful to be sure, but mechanicals aren't that common - you're likely to see one or two every mission, sure, but RNG permitting I prefer more versatile rounds.

While I feel Jade's pain on wasting ammo I also feel that coming back from a mission with unspent explosives is a loss. The whole thing with the ADVENT facility with no door on that side? Blow out a wall. Got the VIP and need to make a break for the extraction? Blow out the other wall. Leave no buildings standing.

That's because most hard root beers are just beers that are spiced to taste like regular root beer. You need the good stuff

You tell me I didn't build that?

I'll have you know I worked my fingers to the bone to get where I am today.
On the subject of VIPs, I've only seen one VIP die: He was taking cover behind a car, I was the other side of the street, and the aliens blew up the car with a salvo of terrible missed shots. I also on the same mission had my evac point suddenly change on me, so instead of being in the far corner where I was moving to, it was on top of a building near my starting location. Not sure why that happened but it doesn't help if you think you're almost there.

The AWC bonus is kind of useful at times, is every skill up for grabs on every class? You guys complained about Blast Padding being uneventful, but one of my rangers managed to get Aim, which is... uhh. Yeah.

Not every skill is in the AWC. It's be a bit poo poo if Salvo for example got put on random people. Somewhere in the code there is a flag for 'can this skill pop up in AWC training' and that determines what you can and can not learn through the AWC. I have also seen at least one skill that is only available from the AWC roulette.

I don't know if *every* skill is up for grabs, but there are actually a few that are *exclusive* to the AWC and are really rare - Lightning Reflexes is still in the game!

You've got your rulers flipped! Two is the lady who gets distracted sometimes (although I've never seen it), three is the guy who does a thing (which you can't run away from because he only does it on groups and it happens on his next reaction).

Personally I've always found one and three to be the real shitwreckers, even with two pointed at my dudes at all times.

Does the bug where the VIP dies if the car blows up even if he's nowhere nearby still happen? I've never experienced it myself, but the main XCOM thread had something like that back when I still followed it.

Also the evac point change usually means the original one got blown up somehow, though I have had it happen at the start of a mission because it spawned on top of an enemy pod.

The lady ruler announced her presence by killing the rest of the pods she spawned with allowing me to rupture/burn/acid her and laugh as she tried to charge my elevated position. It was honestly kind of sad. The remaining dude ruler attacked me while I was doing a supply run and several things exploded.

Some nice AWC skills there:

Shredder on a sniper: outstanding.
Hail of bullets on a specialist: who needs Combat Protocol?
Blast padding on a ranger: well, uhh, it's like Bulwark except it doesn't cause Guavamoment to whine about accidentally granting full cover to the bad guys.

But the best bonus skill pick-up here is Hunter's Instinct in the gorilla tactics school. It's unlocked by getting a ranger to Captain, and while the Hulkster is on a long vacation, all rangers can benefit from it. +3 shotgun damage means even minimum shotgun damage can be a guaranteed kill against weaker enemies, and that's before it starts getting silly with specialized ammo and Rapid Fire.

They can't show up in the Shen's Last Gift mission. They also can't show up in Gatecrasher or in the tutorial missions. That's about it.

I think the way it works is: any time the game makes a viper (or one of the other two spoilery alien types), it might make the appropriate ruler instead.

They can even show up in the Avenger Defense mission by default which is just :psyduck: There's a mod to disable that but it can also disable the rulers showing up entirely.

Can Subject Beta complete the mission failure requirements? 'Cause I tend to keep a lot of people on defense near the mission failure point.
