The Extremists were based on Marvel characters, in the same way the Squadron Supreme is based on DC characters. So yeah, that really *is* Not Doctor Octopus with Not Doctor Doom, Not Sabretooth, and Not Magneto.

Those characters are all intentionally similar to Marvel characters. They're called The Extremists and from an alternate dimension that is ~Mysteriously similar~ to Marvel. There were also heroes (The Blue Jay who is basically knockoff Hank Pym) and the Silver Sorceress (You can figure this one out) who were part of the Justice League for a while. There was also Wandjina who was Knockoff Thor and who you probably remember from showing up in Multiversity if you read that. That said DD dude was Doctor Diehard who was knockoff Magneto.

Not so much knockoff as direct parody, like the guys in that Batman Beyond episode. They had the Fantastic Four origin but instead of awesome superpowers they died horrid deaths.

He made the perfect villain for that Superman/Fantastic Four crossover. Just so he can be all "We're a lot alike, you and I. No, for real. A LOT alike. Look at our origin stories, man! It's crazy!"

That's the second largest duck I've ever had in my pants. - Guybrush Threepwood

Hank Henshaw, his wife Terri, and two others flew the shuttle Excalibur on a mission which paralleled the Fantastic Four's flight. Unfortunately, the power he got from being hit with the solar flare was to rapidly decay. The other's got similarly nasty powers, and only Terri was saved. Hank's body fell apart, but his mind got uploaded into the LexCorp mainframe. He first came back in a robot body which drove his wife insane and eventually to suicide. So, he beams his mind through a NASA satellite into the ship that brought Superman to earth, uses that to construct a new body, and becomes the Cyborg Superman that showed up after Superman died.

Because comics.

I'm rather partial to the pre-fame video he made explaining Knightfall where it was super low-budget. Where Bane was a skinny guy in a luchador mask and Azrael was a black dude in a terrible blond wig excitedly holding a cross. When he became Azbat, he wore a red bucket over his head and Freddy Krueger claws.

There are, in fact, many Canadian black squirrels in the issue, but that is Tippy-Toe who is neither black nor Canadian. I think the coloring is just a bit off in that panel.

Also we have black squirrels here in DC, too. Something like 10% of the local population are black, and they can breed with the brown squirrels.
