I teach on behalf of a school in the US. Lots of America bound students take the AP exams. They're smart kids but I'm not bullish on their chances at this point in the semester. Lots of 3 and 4s in that class' future. AP exams require a level of reading and writing skill that is hard to teach in a majority Chinese environment. Even if my class is in English, they need full immersion to get them from high-intermediate to advanced.

He was radicalized into a Breitbart-spewing Cheeto Fascist by Sean Hannity.

He was then rich enough to get the purestrain Crazy from the central figures of the vast right wing conspiracy. He befriended them, and then now they run his campaign for the presidency.

Yeah except Kim JongUn's approval rating is fake and Putin's isn't. Putin is genuinely popular as hell in Russia. His 80+ approval rating of course still has a lot to do with his dictatorial control over the media and the suppression of all stories that make him look bad, but even an approval rating based on skewed reporting is still a genuine approval rating. Putin isn't going to be deposed any time soon, Russians by and large love the man.

edit: To make my point clearer, his approval rating is not because people are scared of being disappeared, it's because people only ever hear positive things about him, and the Kremlin propaganda machine is very very effective.

Yeah, those are not comparable situations. Kim Jong-Un is popular because there's a cult around his family. Putin originally became popular because he navigated Russia out of the recession of the late Yeltsin years. He's now popular because the Russian right wing likes the idea of re-asserting the Russian sphere of influence and a return to the time when Russia was a great power. Also because he's cool with them oppressing the gays and immigrants from former Soviet republics.

Russia and SK have very different populations. Russian GDP per capita is ~11.000USD, SK GDP per capita is ~25kUSD. I really think those are the figures that matter more than aggregate GDP. Of course they also make Russia look even weaker.

quote:

Russia is acting like the underdog it is, but all the talk is of big dog posturings. Seems relevant.

I still don't really understand what this means, to be honest. Are you saying that Russia acts out on the world stage because it is economically weak, and the US does it for other reasons? Are you saying we shouldn't take Russia seriously? Or more seriously? I'm not trying to antagonize you here, I just honestly don't know why you're bringing GDP into a discussion about war crimes. I don't see the connection.

A genuine approval rating is one that accurately reflects what the people it polls think. For whatever reason. The reason that Russians approve of Putin are suspect as gently caress, but that doesn't mean their approval isn't genuine. This is somewhat important when we have posters in the last couple of pages speculating about how long it will take for Russians to overthrow Putin. North Korea has a higher chance of a revolt because the approval ratings there are actually fake, as in, don't reflect what the populace thinks. Russians are not going to overthrow a leader they respect and trust.

It should be noted that (a) US polling firms actually conduct polls in Russia and get the same results, and (b) this result isn't static, and during the winter olympics Putin lost 20%. He made that up by invading Crimea and "fighting ISIS", both of which are hugely popular in Russia.

She explained that every person in the room had been invited because they'd been involved above and beyond normal, which meant we all had a special reason for being there, and asked us to pair off and explain to someone else why we were here.

I told the story of Vilerat, how I had an internet friend who taught me a ton about the value of diplomacy, and how it's such a powerful weapon. I told her about how I feel every time I see political cartoons where the cartoonist draws Hillary Clinton dancing on his grave. And I told her about that picture, with Mitt Romney smirking because he knew he'd just scored some serious political points while blood was still drying. Every time I feel discouraged about political activism, I just need to look at that picture and get an instant reminder of the awfulness I'm fighting against.

The woman I told this story to cried, and then a bell rang and it was her turn to tell me about why she got involved.

When she was a student, she was really into Model UN. She had a friend there named Christopher Stevens.
