and?
This game has a bunch of problems but I still couldn't stop playing it all day. The AI actually seems worse, at least on my peasant Prince difficulty (I am always bad at Civ), but I guess i need some time to be sure since I only started two games and massively hosed myself in the first one.

I feel like in previous games you could issue a unit command and grab another unit before the auto-next-unit took over, and your selection would override the auto. Already made several wrong moves because it doesn't work that way this time :saddowns:

Needs more hot key options so I can put map scroll on wasd

Also some outright bugs with promotions. I have a cata to promote? Wait why did it take me to a spearman? And why did it keep doing that for like 50 turns? Lol

It's also a pain you cannot upgrade units to less than the max possible. I discovered gunpowder but have no Niter nearby. I have some warriors hanging about and want to upgrade them, but the only option is to upgrade them to Musketmen - which I cannot since I have no Niter. It should let me upgrade to Legions so they;d still be useful, and I could have done that if I'd known I had to before getting Gunpowder :sigh:

loving hell, I cannot even build Legions now that I have Gunpowder, so for "melee" units I am stuck building 41 strength 200 production Pikemen who have a penalty vs melee units because I have forgotten how to build my 40 strength 110 production legions who can also build forts. This is a problem as Giglamesh just declared war on me. Researching an upgrade totally fucks you if you don't have the require new resource since you cannot upgrade to or build "obsolete" units. This is stupid.

Has anyone figured out how to get that UI scaling option in the graphics menu to enable? This game's UI is tiny at 1440p.

Everything is so loving slow.

Science and civics aren't! I get them so fast I almost can't build them before I obsolete myself. And playing on harder difficulties just makes this worse as I have to put more production towards military and defense so the lag becomes even bigger.

I think different prioritization of districts will help fix this but you unlock most of the relevant districts before you tech Industrial Zones, so...

Maybe I should just be focusing on Encampments early on and slurping up some easy opponents to open up some space to tech and catch up with science/culture/production.

Whoa, apparently if you surround a city (including zones of control, which only melee units have) it can no longer heal.

I don't think I'll be able to play another game to completion after my first. Dealing with the Barbarians which never stop was just too god drat annoying. You could probably prevent them from spawning by covering the available map in cities but since you can't automate cities that idea can die in a fire. It really makes no loving sense for a barbarian camp to spawn just outside my city influence, which has two mechanized infantry units around, and the barbarian camp instantly spawns an AT unit and several archers and warriors (yes, archers and warriors with an AT unit for defense).

I also figured out my earlier "bug" with units suddenly having extra movement points:

"A Great General gives a +1 Movement bonus, and a +5 Combat Strength bonus to all friendly land combat units within 2 tiles of the General"

Great generals are INCREDIBLE now, especially with the new movement point system; that extra movement is often the difference between getting stranded in front of a hill and picked apart by archers and just marching right in and gutting them.

A turn based Civilization game is probably one of the very genres left that they haven't touched (lately)

Civ VI's art style is basically the same as Civ IV's. Civ V's more realistic style was really the exception.

One thing I do like is that City states will leave their borders and actively fight barbarians now so it's not strictly required to fog bust around them. Overall I haven't had a lot of issues with barbarians. Occasionally they will catch you with horsemen and horse archers before you have bronze working which sucks.

Does this work with the archer tier 2 promotion, Suppressing Fire? Can you shut off a city with a single archer if you put it in adjacent tile with that promotion?

If someone has conquered City states, can I liberate them? Does it help to conquer the city back from them or does that just take it for myself?

Haven't tried it, but it's certainly worth testing. I don't know if that promotion covers only adjacent tiles or the entire area within range--the latter would be pretty overpowered.

I'm really liking this game :) Playing online speed though.

Just won a faith game on King... Really happy with how my 4 cities turned out: Tundra gives +1 faith to the russian unique faith district, I built three of those combined with the 100% adjacency bonus which gave me a ridiculous amount of faith. I rushed to colosseum when I realized I could get +3 amenities to all 4 of my cities :hfive: . And if I hadn't won before factories, the joint industrial region to the east would have given production bonuses to 3 cities.

Yeah, you can liberate them. When you conquer the city you get an option to keep it or to liberate it and turn it back into a city-state.

Later on you can even wage liberation wars to rescue city-states without incurring any warmonger penalty.

Besides production feeling slow, housing has definitely been my biggest issue. Amenities aren't bad, and carefully-placed Entertainment Centers will help there a lot eventually (later buildings in it give amenities to every city within a certain radius, so you can hit two+ cities with one district), but housing feels so lacking even with my cities on rivers. I wonder if I should spam more farms in unused tiles or something, just to make housing until I get more buildings and other sources of it.

Neighborhoods will definitely be nice when I get them.

I feel like Gorgo is incredibly good for starting because the Wildcard slot is so silly since you can run +1 Hammer and +1 Gold/Faith in Capital City from turn 1 and you can skip building Monuments for a while and just kill things to research your Civics.

AI seems as dumb, or dumber than Civ V... Roosevelt just rocked up on my doorstep with an army of about 10 horsemen, enough to wipe me and my unwalled cities off the face of the earth, and then proceeds to sit around outside my city feeding xp to my archer and not attacking, presumably because the AI knows 'horsemen shouldn't attack cities' but hasn't figured out 'so therefore you shouldn't JUST build horsemen' or 'unless you have loads of them'.

In my Egypt game I was stacking the various bonuses to wonder construction (+45% I think? 15 each from a civic, civ ability, and pantheon ability) to get basically everything that came my way. Combining this with a bunch of sphinxs (for the increased culture and faith output) and trade routes (with the accompanying civ ability), meant I could concentrate on wonder stacking while using gold and faith to buy whatever else I needed. Catherine tried to get cheeky with me by declaring a surprise war, but I just kept buying slingers until I overwhelmed the attackers, and then took Paris. The mid game found me engaged in a religious cold war with the Aztecs, and I'm not sure how that's going to play out; I'm probably just going to restart now that I have a better handle on the mechanics

Do you not get consolation prize money for getting beaten to a wonder anymore? I like some of the changes to wonders that mean you're not going to cram everything into one city anymore, but having all that production 100% wasted if you lose seems pretty punishin

The key to keeping your religion alive in the face of superior theological combatants seems to be going to war again 10 turns after a war ends to clear out the hordes of preachers surrounding your border cities.

I've gotten relics from tribal villages. You can also get them if an apostle with the Martyr upgrade dies.

Artifacts you get by building an archaeologist and excavating ruin sites on the map

The AI seems willing to part with relics for a big chunk of change, too.

Speaking of relics, I found one in a tribal village. It was a holy man's tooth. His tooth.

With the faith and tourism generated by it, I founded Tooth Fairyism and picked up the holy relic belief that tripled faith and tourism output. This tooth is the epitome of holiness among my continent. It is more famous than Stonehenge. It is more famous than the Odyssey. It will likely be more famous than any American movie ever made.

So has anyone else had a bug where one of your cities gains a permanent -11 war weariness penalty? I had it happen out of the blue not long after Spain declared a surprise war on me. I figured that maybe it was a spy op but I got no other notification and it hasn't gone down at all 20 turns after the war ended. I had to abandon that game because having -100% growth in your cap is kinda bad. :(
