It honestly seems to me like a strawman in much the same way I've seen conservatives strawman socialism as being equivalent to fascism. What do you get if you destroy the central authority of the state and replace it with many smaller holdings based on property law? A: Feudalism. It's more that there's not really much ideological room for libertarianism that hasn't already been A system of organization based on consensus decisions making by purely voluntary association would be anarcho syndicalism. A system of organization based entirely on the right to own things with no checks by a monopolistic and democratic state is monarchy/feudalism. I've yet to encounter anything under the libertarian banner that hasn't already been defined better by better people. OwlFancier fucked around with this message at 15:42 on Oct 22, 2016 |

Talk about a place giving itself a bad name... I've seen flyers around the university that I work at about a talk to be given by a guy from George Mason university. I don't want to go into detail but it has to do with state sovereignty and the economics and politics thereof. I can only imagine what kind of horrid, cut-throat, greed-soaked self-serving shite this rear end in a top hat is going to be on about.

If the gold standard was reimplemented, what effect would that have on the price of gold? Considering the practical applications of gold it seems like it could have a really bad effect on the economy.

Going by historic precedent, gold would probably become pretty valuable once the resulting post-apocalyptic civilization has managed to get back to the Bronze Age or thereabouts.

Golbez posted:My argument was: An abusive monopoly can only exist with the state. Any free market "monopoly" would have to be one that actually provided utility to its customers. For example: Standard Oil had close to a monopoly, but had to keep its prices dirt cheap because, if it tried to raise them, competitors would start flooding in. So, the consumer benefited from even the spectre of competition. Hah oh hey the we're at the elementry school level of understanding economics. Eventually once something gets to a certain size it can push smaller competing brands out of business by eating losses for a few years and lowering prices beyond someone's ability to compete, and thanks to economies of scale the losses won't even be a huge hit to the parent "Monopoly". This appears on the outside to be "Competition" driving the price down, and that's technically true, only the competition is going to be transient as hell. It takes a giant to fight a giant, and we have a lot of "Defacto" regional monopolies here in the US because of this.

Which nobody else will be allowed to partake in because they'll buy all the land and not let anybody else in. Did the contract actually specify any penalties for those that don't go?

I apologise in advance to any ladies in the thread because I know that it's sexist, but something about women libertarians and the like really wounds me far more than men - I'm honestly not sure why. Perhaps it's because I am inured to male stupidity but I'd like to think that women are better than that. I don't know why but in any event I'm not proud of it.
