I genuinely want to donate something, because I actually really like some of the communities on this forum. But living in a country where basically nobody owns a credit card makes it such a hassle. (We can do all the important stuff with our debit cards without any additional payments and tend to use more cash anyway.) It took me more than 2 years of lurking before I managed to buy an account.

What terrible country is this? Credit is good.

Yeah, what the hell? You don't need a credit card. A visa/mastercard debit card works perfectly fine too.

My country might be especially backwards then. Most debit cards are based on the mastercard subsidiary Maestro.
In order to get a visa or masercard, you can either get one at a bank, (which is kinda pointless since they are less useful than debit cards around here and have additional fees.) Or you can buy a prepaid credit card, which is basically an expensive gift certificate.

Credit cards are quiet rare around here. And their only real use is international travel.
On average an American charges $4000 on credit card each year, compared to $158 for a German.
Also most CC seem to work on a "pay everything at the end of the month" system. I never really thought about it that much before, but I guess Germans really don't like debt.

That... seems really unlikely. Maestro are just cheap non-embossed Mastercards that are given alongside with student accounts, for secondary accounts in bundled products etc. I'm 101% sure basically anybody who gets a new account in Germany is eligible for a full fledged MC / Visa debit card, maybe you should ask your bank about that. Hell, I used to have an account at an Erstebank subsidiary, and all their banking packages came with a free card with online shopping enabled.

Interesting.

In the US the fees for accepting credit cards are [almost always] paid by the merchant. The liability protections for credit cards are typically better than debit cards.

You don't have to carry debt on your credit card. Many US credit card companies offer some kind of "reward" for using their card (frequent flier miles, "cash back", Amazon credit, etc.) so if you pay it off at the end of each month you get some benefit over using a debit card.

Is someone going to actually make a video game? I thought that was just a joke

doubly stupid for not using credit because that means you could be racking up rewards while paying off your statement in full each month and having a great credit score

Nah, it's more like "oh you want a credit card? That'll be 40€ a year you weirdo. Actually only 30€ if you spend more than X000€ with it."

It's just not needed in everyday life here. And even if you want to buy something on the Internet, aside from a Something Awful forums account, you can just use PayPal or something like that.

I also had to jump thru a bunch of hoop poo poo to get a digital visa account here in the lowlands, but its true you get annual fees just for having a cc around these parts. The service i used (ideal > pay2d) doesn't seem to be available in Germany tho unfortunately.
