Those are "Regiments of Renown" a new quasi-mercenary system that was added to the four main races in the last 2 DLCS. Basically unique elite variants of existing units that can be recruited anywhere but limited to one of each and unlocked by leveling up your main lord.

The Krimson Killas (?) seem insanely deadly to Dwarves. I think those little bastards single handedly mulched through half of my infantry like before I was able to focus them down with crossbow fire.

Krimson Killas are hilarious when fighting weaker infantry units. Where they stumble, however, is against really elite units. They might be able to mulch a dozen swordsman units, but a regular Black Orc can actually match them pretty well due to their larger unit size.

Ok, what the gently caress.

I just had this gigantic battle in my dwarf campaign with a chaff stack against a really elite army of Vampire Counts.
It isn't going especially well but I'm at least making a good fight of it when this Vampire ROR called the Claw of Nagash charges my Runelord and either grabs hold of him or causes some sort of collision bug where the Claw is rushing toward the map edge and dragging my lord with him. The lord is taking a ton of damage as this happens and he breaks as soon as they hit the map edge, immediately shattering the rest of my army who were already in a tough spot.

Someone asked about Playable Todbringer a few pages back, and I'm kinda in the mood to write about stuff, so I figured I'd summarize the remaining playable Lords for the existing factions, except Chaos because gently caress that and I'm pretty sure they aren't getting anything for a long time anyway.

Also I"m only talking about the latest edition rulebooks (before AoS) because that's all I have access to anyway and where CA has been pulling 90% of their stuff so far.

Empire

Reikmarshall Kurt Helborg

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Kurt_Helborg

Basically, is the Empire's Lord of Knights and handlebar mustaches and one of Franz's right-hand men as well as second-in-command. Is a man on a horse who buffs men on horses. Has some items and stuff but they just make him hit harder, not that exciting.

Chance of being added: Ehhhhhh it could happen. Give him lots of Cav focused bonuses and it wouldn't be the worst thing ever. Is a bit of a fan-favorite for flavor (mustache) reasons.

Chance of being a separate faction: Nope.

Ludwig

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ludwig_Schwarzhelm

Is Karl's personal bodyguard, Champion, and Standardbearer. Also holy poo poo that beard. Hits people hard and carries a flag I don't really care tbh.

Chance of being added: If we ever get a legendary hero pack that's just people who sidekick for existing LLs, maybe. Otherwise never.

Chance of being a new faction: His main mechanic is literally being able to take a bullet for Franz, so no.

Marius Leitdorf

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Marius_Leitdorf

The Mad Count of Averland, ie the obligatory "lol random" Character.

His only real mechanic worth mentioning is that he has to roll every turn to decide if he is going to do something random. His flavor text is that he's way crazy.

Chance of being added: Roll 1d6 and consult a chart.

Chance of being a new faction: The only thing in his favor is that he could start in Averland, and maybe have some halfling units.

I can't imagine a way to make him interesting, but CA made fricken Belegar awesome and redshirt Ghorst acceptably cool so I'm not ruling anything out.

Markus Wolfheart

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Markus_Wulfhart

The finest scout and monster hunter in the Empire. Shoots scary things with his amber bow real good.

This is the guy I'm personally rooting for, technically in TT he's just a hero who buffs up your Huntsmen (sneaky empire archers) but he would be really easy to make into an interesting LL choice.

Chance of being added: Pretty high, he's unique, associated with a new unit/hero type he could be bundled with and could plausibly work for either Franz or Toddbringer or as his own faction. Also got a mention in that letter teasing Beastmen.

Chance of being a new faction: He works for Franz, but he roams around and hails from Middenland, so if he's added, almost guaranteed.

Valten, Chosen of Sigmar and Luthor Huss, Prophet of Sigmar

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Valten

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Luthor_Huss

Putting them together because they're pretty much a pair.

Valten isn't in the main army book, I'm bringing him up mostly because Luthor is, but basically he's a mysterious kid wonder who is probably Sigmar reborn and still manages to gently caress up somehow. He like literally got introduced in Storm of Chaos, died miserably, got rectonned back alive in the end times, died again, slightly less miserably.

Luthor is a renegade Warrior Priests with his own rules, most notably a unique self buff, a ward save, and his own battle prayer that grants Stubborn. He believes in Valten.

The biggest problem with these two is that Valten comes from events CA is largely ignoring so far, and also he has Ghal Maraz, which is problematic for Franz. OTOH, if they're looking to create a new Empire subfaction, this is definitely one of the more interesting options.

Boris Todbringer, Count of Middenland.

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Boris_Todbringer

Is not in the 8th edition rulebook. Does have rules in Storm of Chaos or whatever. His rules aren't particularly important, basically he's got a warhorse, a runefang, and a Talisman of Ulric. Todbringer is kind of a dick, who starts out opposed to Franz but they like bro-hug it out later I guess.

Basically, he's relevant only in that Middenland is one of the most interesting Empire Provinces (They house the Cult of Ulric, for one thing) and overall if CA wants to make one of the elector counts playable he's the best option for that.

Empire has too many characters gonna take a break before moving on.

Dwarf Lords

Dwarves only have three named Lord/heroes left and they'll have four when the White dwarf comes out. They also don't have any real units left to add except Slayer Variants. What I'm saying is I don't think they'll get another Lord pack. Regardless, these are the dudes in the book.

Thorek Ironbrow

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Thorek_Ironbrow

Frankly, the guy I thought we were getting instead of Belegar. He's a master runesmith with the anvil of doom, a magic hammer/armor and an incompetent assistant. Honestly, after seeing how Runelords were implemented (Anvil and all) I don't think we're getting Thorek, it just seems massively unlikely. Maybe as FLC someday. Maybe.

Anyway, he comes from Karak Azul so he could be added as a faction leader there but he doesn't have a lot of story ties to anything in particular except helping Belegar and that ship is already out of the harbor.

Grimm Burloksson, Master Engineer

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Grimm_Burloksson

He's a bright young engineer with custom weapon tech. He'd make a decent Legendary Hero but I can't see him added as a lord, mostly because he's just a young kid with no story or background worth mentioning and not really much different than the existing engineers in the game.

Joseph Bugman

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Josef_Bugman

Incoherent drunken rage given Ranger form.

Much like the other two Dwarf characters, the new DLC pretty much kill-shotted the dream of him being added. His signature Rangers are already in the game and one of the required grudges is avenging his brewery, aaaaand Belegar's clan is all over the faction ranger buffs. Oh, and the Bugman's Rangers regen ability is the effect granted by his one magic item, so yeah RIP Bugman.

Like I said, I predict no more Dwarf Lord packs. Maybe a FLC lord or hero pack or free GW Slayers, but no Lord Packs.

Oh, one more thing. Not in the rulebook but worth mentioning is Gortek and Felix the has-a-shitload-of-novels slayer dwarf and his human companion. They have voice clips in the game files, and Skarsnik's two model implementation would make them easy to do. If Dwarves get anything at this point it'll be these guys as a Legendary Hero.

Next up Vamps, who might eventually get another Lord Pack but sure as gently caress not for Sylvania. Heroes, though...

Vampire Counts

The short version is that the 8th edition rulebook only focuses on characters in Sylvania, and CA has already added those lords. The only thing missing are heroes, which I'll get to in a bit.

There's some characters who exist in the lore and other editions that might have a slim chance of being added, mostly likely Neferata or the Red Duke. If so they will get their own faction. Not gonna talk about those today, because their rulebook presence is old as poo poo.

Actually gently caress the long format for this, The Vampires have two notable heroes (Krell and Isabella) who are strongly associated with Kemmler and Vlad, respectively. If they get added (Isabella has sound files, it's quite likely) it'll be as sidekicks to those two. There's just one other name in the armybook...

Konrad Von Carstein

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Konrad_von_Carstein

Konrad is the Hideyoshi of the Carstein bloodline, he took over when Vlad died and was eventually overthrown and killed after falling completely into violent madness.

Rulewise he's a hero Vampire with no magic but really strong melee skills and the "One Bat Short of a Belfry" rule to represent his madness. I don't particularly see him being added between his being dead and not really bringing anything new to the table but there's a suspicious amount of loading screen quotes about him, so not completely impossible I guess.

TLDR VCs might get a Hero Pack or non-Sylvania Vampire Lords, otherwise than are looking almost as done as Dwarfs.

Taking a break and then finishing up with Greenskins and Beastmen, who also have a lot of characters.

Marius Leitdorf could be a solid option for people that want to either ignore diplomacy or want to play reactively to it. Either give Marius events where he pisses people off by acting mad (i.e. drawing swords at the "troll in the ballroom" which is in fact a nobleman's wife), or make the stack he leads A.I. controlled. On the tactical map give him the Medieval II trait of automatically charging nearby enemies, and give him special skills to massively buff his army's charge bonuses.

I'd like to see something like a WoC LL that is marauder-centric for example, making one of the Norscan tribes playable.

Greenskin Lords and Heroes

Gorbad Ironclaw

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Gorbad_Ironclaw

The legendary Warboss who almost brought the Empire to their knees...like a hundred years ago. He's super dead, which isn't necessarily a problem for CA, but just saying.

Gorbad rides a huge boar and is basically the Grimgor of giving inspirational Orc speeches. He's a strong fighter and he buffs the poo poo out of Orcs, especially Big Un's

Chance of Being Added: Maybe?

Chance of Being a New Faction: Almost certainly yes.

Grom the Paunch

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Grom_the_Paunch

The Fattest Gobbo who ever lived. Managed to piss off the High Elves like no goblin ever has or will.

Dude ate a troll and gained superpowers paired with morbid obesity, and decided his purpose in life was specializing in posh chariots, because obviously. He's pretty drat dead, but what once was fat can never truly die, probably.

Jokes aside, he's a beastly regenerating goblin on a scythed chariot who has a knack (and magic axe) for killing elves.

Chance of being Added: Pretty good.

Chance of having a new faction: If he's added, he'll almost certainly start near or on Ulthuan. So not until High Elves are added, but I could definitely see it.

Snagla Gobspit

(doesn't even get a wiki entry, apparently.)

Snagla is a goblin hero who leads the Deff Creepers, a special spider-rider upgrade that just got added as a RoR. RIP SNAGLA, we never knew you, or cared.

Gitilla the Hunter

Yes, that's an Atilla pun. See Snagla, replace spider with wolf. RIP HUNPUN.

So yeah, Greenskins are looking pretty done, though generic Shaman Lords or some more orc oriented RoR would be nice. I don't even know what they'd get for Legendary Heroes if that becomes a thing.

Beastmen

Surprisingly, despite the small army list there's a lot of named beastmen. And only two in the game so far so this will take a while...

Gorthor the Beastlords

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Gorthor

The most famous Beastmen who ever lived...a thousand fricking years ago, man is this guy dead.

That said, he's a melee lord on a chariot who knows death magic and has some reasonably cool magic items. CA could do worse.

Chance of Being Added: Neither Chariots or Death Magic is adding anything to Beastmen and he's super dead so I doubt it.

New Faction: It's Beastmen, any or all additions could be a new faction.

Charros Warhoof

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ghorros_Warhoof

A Centigor hero who mostly exists as an easy RoR inspiration. Odds are low.

Morghur the Shadowgave

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Morghur

Man, that dude is hosed up even for a Beastman. The datamine had his name leading a Beastmen subfaction in the Wood Elves mini-campaign, and he is easily the most interesting choice left for a BM LL, so it's not impossible. He's got a history with the Wood Elves, so having him start in Athel Loren is also a good fit for him.

Odds of being either a paid or FLC lord are pretty drat high, basically. Morghur is unique in that he's not that good at either magic or fighting, he's just got aura of chulthu around him that auto-deflects all missiles, auto-damages adjacent units, and randomly warps allies into Chaos spawn. He'd be hard to do right, but definitely memorable.

Taurox, the Brass Bull

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Taurox

A mega-doombull with Brass Skin and double Flaming Axes. Always angry. After Morghur, I think the most likely Beastman to get added someday.

Moonclaw

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Moonclaw

I'm not sure even how to describe this guy, Beastmen characters are pretty out there.

He's a mounted hero wizard with Shadow Magic paired with crazy moon powers, including calling down a warpstone shower or unleashing waves of insanity. A good choice for either a LL or Legendary Hero.

I'm out of stanima, but Beastmen have two more named heroes:

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Ungrol_Four-Horn

and

http://warhammerfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Slugtongue

I don't think either of them are likely, but man, Beastmen characters are mostly described as unknowable eldritch abominations, and I gotta respect that.

I doubt they would do it, but a Northern Wastes mini-campaign could be really cool if done right. Events to curry favor, quest battles to destroy specialized followers of other chaos gods, dealing with Empire or Dwarf incursions, etc. Could set up Kislev as the larger enemy faction like Todbringer. I don't see it happening though.

I think if nothing else, the fact all the other DLCs have cool little flavourful titles and the Chaos one is just "Chaos Warriors Race Pack" shows how half-arsed they are.

They were a preorder bonus. That should be enough to tell you what you need to know. That being said, given the way the Warherd of Chaos works it's clear that Chaos Warriors are only one intended faction that shows up during the end times. Presumably cultists and demons of chaos will also be armies that join them later on.

On that note though I have another cool mod. It's called Chaos Undivided. And it is loving awesome. It essentially turns the Chaos Warriors into the titular Chaos Undivided faction, turning them into the end times threat they are in the lore. This serves to change them from a chosen and warrior focused band of troops to the high cost high power army they are on tabletop.

This means that it has everything. Champions and troops of every god on the warrior end. Demons and cultists on the demon side. It even has greater demons like Bloodthirsters, thanks to some clever retextures and custom units they've put together.

Here's the insanely long unit list.

quote:

- Warriors of Khorne
- Warriors of Nurgle
- Warriors of Slaanesh
- Warriors of Tzeentch
- Norscan Berserkers
- Warriors of Nurgle (Scythes)
- Nurgle's Afflicted
- Chaos Cultists
- Manticore Knights
- Followers of Slaughter
- Knights of Khorne
- Exalted Champion of Khorne
- Norscan Huskarls
- Mounted Cultists
- Knights of Slaanesh
- Exalted Champion of Nurgle
- Knights of Nurgle
- Exalted Champion of Slaanesh
- Slaanesh's Blessed
- Bringers of Change
- Cultists (Polearms)
- Fallen Knights of Chaos
- Plaguebearers of Nurgle
- Cult Grandmaster
- Warriors of Khorne (Great weapons)
- Bloodletters of Khorne
- Bloodthirster
- Revamped Lord of Change (REMOVED but still in CB. Will be re-added into the camp)
- Aspiring Sorcerers
- Thralls
- Thralls (Polearms)
- New Marauder colour scheme
- Huskarls (Great Weapons)
- Skull Hunters
- Daemonic Summoners
- Lore of Daemons
- Exalted Champion of Tzeentch
- Knights of Tzeentch
- Galrauch, the first Chaos Dragon
- Chaos Cultists (Dual-Wield)
- Gorebeasts
- Lord of Khorne (both on foot and mounted)
- Flesh Hounds of Khorne
- Lord of Nurgle
- Chaos Ogres (as well as two-handed weapons)
- Overhauled Aspiring Champions

Units like the Daemonic Summoners can also summon in other troops. So there's extra units not mentioned as well. I ended up unleashing a bloodthirster on someone at one point. :unsmigghh:

Sadly still looking for one that alters Kislev to not have the passive trait. However I did find one that unfucks the northern tribes so they don't just buddy up to each other all game and actually make war on each other until Chaos shows up to vassalize them all. It removes the two huge tribes and makes like six or seven small ones instead.

This actually serves to make the north even scarier at times due to them having more income for troops and having honed their troops on each other before chaos shows up. :stare:

Their lame king is already in the game, I doubt the Green Knight will make an appearance, since his fluff is basically that he shows up randomly when bretonnia is in peril. With Bretonnia and the other Human factions (CA please, please do Tilea, Estalia and Kislev even though they aren't tabletop armies, its not as fun when they are just Empire clones!) I'd basically just look to history and myth to make up the balance of the roster (its essentially how Warhammer Fantasy armies are designed anyway). Bretonnia already has the fantastical/mythical elements down, so I'd just go looking at French and English medieval history for stuff that sounds fun, CA would have some of the research done for them on that front already having done Medieval Total War twice already.

Their lame king is already in the game, I doubt the Green Knight will make an appearance, since his fluff is basically that he shows up randomly when bretonnia is in peril. Maybe a special rule when the whole army is wavering or broken, GK shows up and buffs morale/kicks rear end? Would be cheap as hell in multi but could be fun in campaign

I mean, that's the fluff for Grombrindal too and lo and behold...

The Green Knight is actually magical though, literally charging out of a forest into bretonnia's enemies and then charging right back to reappear somewhere else miles away.

Having him as the ultimate spell or ability for lord tier damsels is a good idea and would fit with the fluff.

Ever seen the old WFRP Bretonnia book? I have it lying around somewhere and that one has some fun stuff about warrior shepherds and such that could make for fun units.

Oh yeah, I remember that. Essentially Bretonnian lords consider it inelegant to hire mercenaries to defend their lands, but on occasion, and specially on hilly territories prone to Greenskin warbands, they hire groups of heavily armed "shepherds" to take care of a singular sheep.

Someone on the thread once called Bretonnia a nation of polite fictions, and they were right on point.

It's a pretty good book actually. A lot of the 2nd edition WFRP books are, quite fun as well. Liked the kind of random character early modern Call of Cthulhu-thing they had going on in that game. And the Bretonnia book had this quote:

Knights of the Grail - A Guide to Bretonnia posted:

Women in Bretonnia are second-class citizens, and many careers are only open to them if they pretend to be men. This is not a feature of Bretonnian society of which the author or Games Workshop approves, but women pretending to be men make interesting characters in a roleplaying game.

e: Herrimaults and the Faceless would also be a fun unit/hero combination, but be a bit hard to justify fighting for Bretonnia, seeing as they are outlaws fighting for the peasants, but I guess you could just go the "eh, why not?" route there and include them anyway.

Royalty is a continuous cutting motion

Bretonnia is an entire society that exists for two reasons: to produce people who can become Grail Knights and Grail Damsels, and to act as a buffer state for Athel Loren. Everything odd about them comes from putting people in that situation, with all their crazy social strata rules. Objective one was mostly achieved when Gilles le Breton became the green knight since the lady of the lake wanted to set him up with her daughter, the rest are just filling out her next pantheon.

The example Bretonnian Knight Errant character from wfrp2e is a lady knight from Lyonesse disguised as a man (who wants to be just like Repanse) who is obviously a woman and everyone knows but will never admit it. They all just say it's a guy with fantastic hair.

It reminds me of that Terry Pratchett book, Monstrous Regiment.

Yeah, I don't think people really understand how utterly lovely Bretonnia is.

On another note, someone sell me on a fun way of playing Empire. It's the only faction I've yet to enjoy a playthrough of. It feels like I'm supposed to attack my own Elector Counts to grow/get their land, but this of course is a huge rear end in a top hat move. If you don't attack your own Elector Counts, you get to......hang out in Reikland for half the game until Chaos/Greenskins/VC start invading your lands and you can start confederating everyone?

Should I be like.....setting up military access with Stirland and going to attack Sylvania early? Having Karl Franz wander south to fight the Orcs in the Badlands while the Empire does it's thing? Go North and fight the Norscans? I just don't like this faction.

Go beat up the bretonian minors and as long as you play nice with tilea and whatever brettonians you keep around to trade with its a very safe way to grow an economic base.

If you've done a bit of bribery with your elector neighbours a lot of them should really like you by now so you can get military access and go kill the vampires or fight chaos if they're around.
