It's not really plagiarism but it's very much in the vein of Mighty No 9 or Bloodstained or whatnot. Though even with the flaws EA is a lot more competent than MN9.

My favorite bit so far is battles have an opening bit like "Come to me, my noble einherjiar" with acheesy voice line.

Figured I'd part some thoughts on Exist Archive, since I haven't seen anyone else talk about it since release.

It's basically Valkyrie Profile without all the Norse mythology. Homage, or even plagiarism, isn't a strong enough word to describe it. 2d dungeons, map screen is a menu, each character is assigned to a face button in combat, etc. If you have any questions I didn't answer, is probably just like VP.

The main issues I have is that combat isn't as smooth. On offense your guys don't seem to be that responsive, I've hit buttons mid combo and the guy just stands there for a few second. Defense is worse, due to the perspective you can't tell who is being attacked so the active guard is hard to do correctly.

Dungeons are also currently boring, because I don't have any advanced movement options or things like the crystals from VP. Hopefully I find something to add in more puzzles or platforming.

I'm not currently that far in, 2 "missions" after you get your fifth character.

Welp. Game is dead to me :negative:

Ugly art direction just seals the deal.

The key with CotP is just to make sure to stack things as far in your favor as you reasonably can. Buffs, debuffs, status effects, just abuse the poo poo out of all of them.

can anyone tell me how much this specific line in the fan translation of emerald dragon matches up with the japanese text? i'm just a bit curious, i know there are some fan translations that are infamous for throwing in tons of swearing and stuff like that and i'm wondering how much of it is the game in this instance

It's pretty accurate, actually. I might even say it's toned down by a hair.

Unless your question is "is the word 'rear end' appropriate" which I feel is more about what rating you're aiming for in English than any idea of swear intensity in the original Japanese.

if there's any one issue this game has, it's how simple and easy the combat is while also requiring too much input from the player. playing emerald dragon and suikoden side by side, ed is honestly way, way easier, but the combat doesn't have an auto fight option so you can't just mindlessly fast forward through it

it would be cool if you could actually do anything fun in combat but you can only control one character and he's really boring to use

Anyone played the original Zill O'll? It randomly popped up on my radar as a really good underdog untranslated JRPG for the PS1 which is pretty much my favorite ultra-specific type of game. I know all later versions of the game were remakes of the first one (except the latest one which is the only one we have in English) but can anyone give me an opinion on whether I should bother with the original first before trying the remakes? Japanese gamers are kind of split on the issue, since the PS1 version has crappy graphics and long load times (plus less content) but a more famous sound-track.

I dunno. Just looking for comments from anyone who's played the game(s). Beginner's tips would be appreciated too since it's an open-ended game and I tend to flounder in those.

Also, don't hesitate to kill off a couple of your characters with the Plume. You'll get overpowered skills from them that you can also use in future playthroughs. It's entirely possible to beat the game on your first playthrough without using it except when it's required in the tutorial, but it gets pretty rough in places.

How's Odin Sphere Leifthrasir in the long run? I loved the demo but the ease of infinite juggles for 300+ hit combos left me wondering how much challenge and variety the full game has.

Sakurazuka

You can play it on Normal and infinite combo poo poo to death all all day or turn it up to Hard which has an actual challenge and you need to learn boss patterns and stuff, though the difficulty of the game still leans towards figuring out what stuff you can combo together forever.
I enjoyed the combat, it's probably the best looking 2D game ever made, and the story and characters (apart from Oswald) are cool too.

Might still get it anyways because as silly as it is there's charm to triple digit combos every now and then.

In my mind there's a much better game that uses the ally-sacrifice system from Covenant of the Plume. Here you can only kill off a character when they cease being relevant to the plot, and when you do the plot shifts at random as to who you can recruit. Also the game forces you to escort NPCs only for them to die in a cutscene. Really, you could build a short but highly replayable game out of just the Plume mechanic, sacrificing length for reactivity like Alpha Protocol.

More details on Nier Automata's battle system. Two weapon load-out, one assigned to a speed attack while the other is the heavy attack. You can switch between the weapons sets mid-combo, so your 1 hand/2 hand sword set can be switched to knuckles/scythe for example.

Dodging is via the R2 button, dodging at the right time will make you invincible and give you special attacks if you attack out of it.

Honestly that's very little information since it just described most Platinum combat systems.

At least there are some alternate fire modes for the Pod. I hope they can be as exciting as the spells in the first game.

Generally the newest mini bosses they added to the game will be the hardest things you fight. The bosses from the old games will melt from your onslaught. If you play on hard you take so much damage that you can die very quickly if you are not paying attention, so you really want to keep mowing things down.

Overall it works in most places. Some minibosses are truly a headache. If things get bad though, the new potion revamps make everything much easier. There really isn't much in the game that a few Cyclone options won't solve.

This is one of the bigger reasons I preferred Suikoden 1. Everything in 2 felt too dragged out. I didn't like the beginning much at all.

When I had only played Sui2 I thought it would be my favorite RPG forever, but Sui1 does have a lot of things it does better. Not the least of which is the OST. I can't even listen to the synth warble crap from 2 anymore.

That said, 5 is my favorite Suikoden. Not for any good reason though. Just personal preference

5 was pretty much everything I wanted in a new Suikoden game, except that I found the villain to be pretty lame. Everything else was amazing though and it makes me sad that they didn't get to do Suikoden 6 in a similar style

Tournament arcs in anything just take story pacing out the back and put a bullet in its head if they're not the main focus of it. You know exactly what's going to happen for the next 5-10 hours, and you just want it over with to get back to the actual story.
