Van still has the engine it. It currently alternates between tool/parts storage and a runner for whatever else we might need.

Day one complete: Truck status: Front clip entirely removed Engine and bellhousing are free from transmission, but we can't get the engine out. Either it's really stuck on the shaft there, or we missed a bolt somewhere. And I've officially driven the van. Ground wasn't quite as level as we needed it to be at the top of the hill, so we took the easy way to the bottom. https://youtu.be/jKxENw_eTgg Potato quality video because my friend sucks, but hey. Van status: Begging for a merciful death. Oh well, we've been at this for over 12 hours, it's time for a break. ExplodingSims fucked around with this message at 07:07 on Oct 27, 2016 |

A trick for pullin aircooled motors was to pull the bolts holding the motor to the trans and then step on the clutch pedal. Motors popped right out using that trick. is the clutch pedal still functional? Give it a try, might work.

I've used that trick to remove truck transmissions (NV4500s out of V8 dodges, chiefly) and jeep transmissions and engines as well. Works great if things aren't really really really seized. Having someone romp on the clutch pedal repeatedly while applying a rubber mallet to the bellhousing closest to the seam to be split can help too. Just don't get overly enthusiastic unless you want to crack the BH.

Turns out there were some brackets with rubber in them we couldn't see on the sides of the bellhousing. Jacked up the BH and cleared those and v we were good to go!

You're not throwing out the engine, are you? I've got a soft spot for inline engines, I think they're cool as gently caress. Is that a 6 or an 8?

It's a straight 6. But it's totally siezed. Pistons are going to be removed and given to goons who donated to the cause, as well as the crank. Not sure what ll happen to the block just yet

We've started using ratchet straps to install Subaru engines now. I'm sure it would work for a big titty V8.

I have more cut-out-of-junk-cars seatbelts than I know what to do with, because a seatbelt tied around the passenger front and driver rear intake runners on an EJ25 almost exactly crosses the engine's CG. Add one cheapo ratchet strap to the harmonic balancer for attitude control and they go in soooo easy. Seatbelts are also stupid strong... 4000 to 6000 pound rated depending on where in the car they came from. You don't need the seatbelts in the van anymore, aside from the drivers seat, right?

Now that the engine is out test fitment can commence! Bellhousing fits pefectly, and the new crossmember looks like it'll work. We have however run into our first issue. The bell housing has a much larger threaded hole for the pivot ball for the clutch fork. I never read about anyone having issues with this, so I'm not quite sure what the solution is. I'm not sure if I can find one online with that small of a ball and that big threading. It's like a 3/4" hole

Find out what thread it is on the outside, find out what thread it is on the inside, buy a bolt with the outside thread. Drill a hole on the end and tap to the size of the inside thread. Thread in with loctite, cut off head if necessary for alignment. That's what I'd do anyways Kinda surprised the truck is a hydraulic clutch or even has a pivot - figured it'd be a mechanical linkage on a pivoting shaft?

It's not impossible that a suitable adapter can be found among common plumbing items. Over here in Euroland all threaded pipe fittings are inch fractions. Not sure about thread pitch and whatever else, but it might be worth checking out.

Over here all pipe threads are tapered and use different thread pitches from bolts, sadly.Dagen H posted:It's the pivot for the release fork? Yeah, but every ancient truck (and all the heavy duty trucks I've seen) that I've been under has had a pivoting shaft going through the bellhousing and two arms off of it that actuate the TOB rather than a pivot ball. Was just confused by that. Like this:

I don't think I can use that ball, it looks like the head is the same size as the threads, which would make it way too big to fit in the fork.

It's the one that fits that bellhousing. Start grinding. Alternatively, http://www.dormanproducts.com/itemdetail.aspx?ProductID=26750&SEName=14550

Just wanted to mention that all this is being done by Sims and a really really good friend of his. I've been busy with work and haven't put a wrench on this thing, just been cheering from the sidelines. Edit: I was going to say haven't put a hand on it but that's my goofy rear end running behind the truck as we pushed it down a hill.
