It's not illegal to have a firearm on federal property unless you are doing something illegal with it. Otherwise hunting wouldn't be possible on federal land. So, because they were (apparently) not doing anything illegal, there were no firearm possession charges to face. The 'possessing a firearm in a federal facility' is basically a top-up gently caress you for doing something wrong, like using a weapon in the commission of a crime. The only way this could have ever made sense is if the jury agreed beforehand to decide on a "not guilty" for every charge regardless of the facts.
