Of course I was following it. It was an open and shut case, though.

I guess I should have been clearer and said that the verdict was out of nowhere, or at least very unlikely to sane, rational people who still believe in a sense of justice and at least try not to expect courts to explicitly not give a gently caress in the form of a verdict by a process (ie jury nullification) that many goons take for granted as a weapon to avenge bad judges or whatnot.

e: Not a single charge stuck? Nothing?

That's too insane to even consider beyond comedic levels of white privilege for patent criminals and thugs. Like, literal South Park joke-levels of beyond rational possibility.

They were also acquitted on some firearms charges, but I forget all the details.

The firearm charges were basically tacked on to the first charge, which was conspiracy to obstruct federal workers. Sort of a regular robbery vs armed robbery thing. The firearm charges became moot once the first charge fell through.

Scholars are some of the most pompous and pedantic people I've ever had the joy of meeting.
Maybe Oregon will announce charges against them but I'd be amazed if they had any desire to do so after watching a slam dunk case get tossed like this one just did. I can't imagine any prosecutor having enough faith in their potential jury at this point even if the state level charges would be 'easier' to prove.

It's not a good verdict, but acting like it came out of nowhere fails to address the reasons why it happened. It wasn't unpredictable. There were a lot of problems with how the government presented their case. Court cases aren't just about the facts.

Wasn't one of the charges possession of a firearm on federal land/facilities? There was video evidence of them carrying guns!

Possession alone is not always illegal. While they did have guns and video evidence of them with guns, there's no evidence of them using the guns to threaten people, nor did the federal prosecutors try to provide evidence linking specific guns to specific people in ways that would be illegal (according to the charges presented.)

I just looked up the statute. It is always illegal but they weren't charged with simple possession. They were charged with possession in the commission of a crime. The latter is 5 years in jail instead of just 1. Why they weren't charged with both is mind boggling though.

Im not saying that double jeopardy rule is dumb, I just dont understand why a jury is allowed to make a decision and then just not have to show any proof that they were reasonable and sane individuals while making it.

It's a necessity to having a free court of law. No getting around it plain and simple

It's legal to have a gun on a wildlife refuge per subsec (d)(3) for "hunting or other legal reasons", and as you mentioned they were charged with the possession in the commission part, which was probably dumb. Perhaps charging both might be considered double jeopardy since you're trying the same "crime" twice?

Also while the indictment listed six charges, here's a picture of the verdict sheet from the jurors:

It looks bad but it's not. Those are EMAS (Engineered Materials Arrestor System) panels. They're a highly aerated concrete composite that's designed to crush like that to absorb the plane's energy and slow it down quickly and safely. LaGuardia has them because they don't have space for a traditional 1000' overrun at the end of the runway.

They're also SUPER expensive so I wonder if the campaign is getting the bill for it.
