what about online-only games?

Collectors will just buy the empty box of the first release that's been filled with some pieces of cardboard and shrink-wrapped so it looks mint. For archival purposes if we can save all youtubes, we'll be able to recreate all aspects of playing WoW and TF2. Hopefully we'll have developed a cure for autism by then so literally no-one will want to actually play on-line-only games.

The first MMO I ever played was called Underlight. I was 12 years old at the time. I only played for the 30 day trial because I couldn't afford a subscription. It was very confusing and the community seemed to revolve more explicitly around role-playing than the grindfests that came after it. It was significant because it was the origin of the online handle that I've used for the last 13 years.

I looked it up and apparently it's still online. Maybe I'll try to log in for an epic nostalgia blast.

FFXIV is actually fun though, and would be really great if its design wasn't hamstrung from the beginning by needing to run cross-platform on PS3.

Recently got another Apple IIc, this time in much better shape, and with the original monitor:

It had some pretty bad yellowing, so I decided to attempt the process here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SO4mjEasdTM

All you need is some of this: (hydrogen peroxide cream aka "Developer", available on Amazon or a beauty supply store), sunlight, and plastic wrap!

Apply liberally to part, cover with plastic wrap (to prevent the creme from drying), and set out in the sun for a few hours until it reaches the desired state.

The results where impressive to say the least.

Both parts only needed about 5-6 hours of sun exposure to reach that state. I also tried using a UV light. While this worked, it took over 12 hours to achieve the same result as 4-6 hours of direct sunlight.

I used to have an all-in-one Brother word processor (daisy wheel printer taking up most of the space) a long time ago, and to this day when I write it's with one of those full screen editors which I try to get to be just the right shade of yellow to match the old monitor built into it.

Yeah, it works really amazingly well. Some people are concerned that it's going to slightly weaken the plastic, but I think as long as it's non-structural and not under any significant load, who cares?

There is also a DIY recipe called retrobrite that will deyellow old plastic cases.

http://www.heypoorplayer.com/2016/03/30/how-to-whiten-your-old-consoles-with-retrobrite-gel/

Problem is the cases can keep yellowing though I think there is a UV coating you can apply to protect them in the future.

It's pretty much the same thing, the important parts are oxygen and UV light.

And yeah, it will not stop any further yellowing.

No fans, it is totally silent except for when the floppy drive is accessing... No hardrive.. Awesome clicky keyboard though!

I am working on making it a wireless Apple IIc by adding a bluetooth serial module to it. There is a java app called ADTPro that allows quick transfer of floppy images via serial to the IIc and other Apple II machines. This will make it very easy to transfer software.

The developer cream is basically Retrobrite in a bottle. You need to add nothing more to it, and it is inexpensive. ($6.99 USD on Amazon).

Some people on various vintage computing forums have discovered the yellowing is not 100% caused by UV as previously thought. Temperature seems to play a role as well. Some have had their de-yellowed cases go right back to yellow in short order. Hopefully mine doesn't.

I kept every floppy disk from my younger days. I have cases of 5.25" and 3.5" disks from the mid nineties.

The school system I went to had standardized on Apple II's. Every classroom had 1-2. So it was the first computer I ever used.

Yeah we had IIc's in elementary/middle school. I remember being really confused when none of the DOS commands I knew worked on the non-HDD-equipped school computers. Just that blue screen with the text prompt.

Could you actually do anything on that screen? How did it pop up without a hard drive?

So many memories of playing Marble Madness, Rastan, Thexder and 3D Mini-golf. They had trackballs too which was great for golf and MM.

I don't remember what they upgraded to, except that they used those CDs that were embedded in plastic trays like bigass floppy disks, and someone in the IT department managed to install Civilization 1 on all of them. Good times.
