:abuela: retains many roads to victory even if PA did go Trump, although it would probably mean we don't get that Senate seat, and that wouldn't be great either. I also doubt it would go Trump over that much. I don't think there's parallel bullshit in Pittsburgh, and aren't the two cities kind of approximately similarly sized?

No, Philly is the fifth largest city in the country and is much more dense. Pittsburgh is considerably smaller and also not quite as uniformly Democratic.

I've been wondering about this too. I think your current title takes precedence, but once you're no longer in office it defaults to whatever your highest office was.

So if you were a Congressperson, then a Senator, then a Congressperson again, your title would be "Representative". But once you leave office you become "Senator So-and-So".

The big question is how it works with really important titles. Like if Obama got bored in retirement and decided to be Governor of Illinois, would he be called Governor or President Obama? Or would it depend on who was talking, like Republicans would call him Governor as a sign of disrespect and Democrats would call him President as a sign of respect.

What if he ran for city council instead? Would he be Councilor Obama or President Obama?

Profoundly dull

Tyvm.

I've been thinking about the long-term fallout of this election a lot (lol who hasn't tho) and the really significant confounding factor in this versus other times of hyperpolarization is the fact it's all being played out in the indelible ink of social media—as opposed to becoming essentially invisible, especially to strangers, once the signs and bunting come down, who a person supported in this election might reasonably be expected to be among the first things the kind of google investigations hiring departments, network contacts, and prospective partners habitually do, and with this cycle's absolute insanity that information will potentially always be explosive.

Please dont misconstrue this as 'oh the poor trumpies, how can we normalize their vileness so it doesn't hurt them :ohdear:;' someone could ask a question very much like this as a rhetorical way to equate the two sides and I'm not doing that at allllll, the semiotic significance of a Trump bumper sticker and especially their reasons for disliking the other side are obviously on a whole different awfulness magnitude from what even the most committed Chomskyite would try to argue about hillary, I just worry that this is a brand-new social pressure we're gonna have to come to grips with somehow.

I worry in particular about the possibility of businesses becoming increasingly self-selective in hiring hyperpartisans and narrativists and at least on the conservative side start sandbagging the economy from the private sector.

This is not election-related, but this is good..

quote:

Leah’s Life Lessons: The Appropriation of Y’all

In the age of the importance of political correctness, where every person is openly offended for one reason or another, I have attempted to build up a thick skin towards the insensitive jokes, stereotypes, cultural appropriation and overall ignorance.

However, I’ve started to notice a trend picking up across the nation, especially among those who hail from the Midwest, New England, and western states who have started to rub me the wrong way. It’s the use of a four-letter word that many people probably don’t even realize they’re using: y’all. Yep, that’s it. It’s such a small word, and I can imagine you wondering why it even matters...

...real fuckin good. And yes there more to it than that at the link.

Also this is good too:

Washington intended for presidents to revert to their highest previously-held title and relinquish "President" anyway. If Obama actually became a supreme court justice (which means Michelle's either dead or exiled to Mars, so let's not root for it), I imagine he'd be Justice Obama except for specific ex-president contexts like White House photo ops.

Given the usual state of Illinois politics you'll see someone from the Obama administration end up in the Governor's Mansion, but instead of Obama it will be Rahm Emanuel.
