He said he's getting 230 miles per tank which is about what my TJ gets - not terrible but not really good at all. He should be paying under $3/gallon and a 20 gallon tank = $60 fill up.

Has mpg gotten way worse?

Hell was but a distant memory for the old Jeep. It'd been there. It'd done that. It bore the scars of long-forgotten battles fought on freeways across the country and hodge-podge repairs that barely kept it functioning. For a time it had been allowed to rust, perhaps for most suvs this would be the end, but fate had other plans. The cracked windshield rattled as the worn suspension bounced over a minor bump in the road. The driver responded by goosing the throttle, as if to punish the vehicle for daring to speak.

The current maniac behind its wheel was cruel, having filled the crankcase with lucas oil stabilizer. The result was truly a miracle only known to AMX vehicles, for a time, worn bearings, stuck lifters, and old seals were given new life by the higher viscosity and frothier oil. Any other motor likely would've failed long before now, but the old XJ pioneered on, now somewhere between Montana and Wyoming.

This was the Jeep's final ride, or so it hoped. It had no need for bubblegum or hope, just more oil stabilizer; having been forced into a vicious cycle of additive addiction that would ultimately end in one of two ways, engine failure, or 2qt of gear oil, followed by engine failure. At every stop it washed down more oil stabilizer with gallons upon gallons of gasoline. It gluttonously gulped down fluids as its only outlet against its owner, having broken its own gauges to force the issue.

Oil pressure looks pretty good (50-60psi hot running?) for a 4.0L that old, but I'm assuming some of that is the lucas talking.

Volt gauge is at the very end of a long bare-minimum-gauge wiring loop, that voltage looks absolutely fine for a RENIX w/ the old Delco alternator setup. If he has the headlights or blower or both running, he's probably actually boiling the battery right now with the gauge reading like that, headlights-on @ normal charging voltage on those usually means you'll see like 12 or 13 on the gauge, headlights+blower you can see as low as 10 to 12. It's retarded and I'm glad they fixed that in 97.

I think that might also be the second highest speed I've ever seen indicated on a RENIX speedo. Highest was 97mph in my friend Sam's '90 2.5L (!) TBI (!!) 4speed (!!!) MJ. No, I don't know how.

What is the plan? Is the jeep ending up stranded in NE, stranded in FL, or going back to WA after? I suppose that depends on the truck outcome somewhat. INQUIRING MINDS NEED TO KNOW

Roughly straight down or a bit past it (at least on a 96) is 120, GPS verified, that's the fastest I've ever done. I don't recommend it, it feels smooth but anything goes wrong and you'll leave a debris trail bigger than Columbia.

Seat Safety Switch posted:

How does a loving 4.0 knock?

The one in my 98 did after 250k+ miles (in a different chassis), 20 or 30k miles with me, followed by hooning it around back roads with 1.5-2 quarts of oil in it without lifting in corners even when hearing rod knock and lifter rattle due to losing oil pressure. I tore it down during the mantrans swap and found each rod bearing had about 2/3 of its copper showing, slid new bearings in with a bit of assembly lube, and it quieted right down, then rejected its organ transplant within days and knocked again. Still drove it the same, still didn't care, it quieted down after about a half mile of driving in the morning.

Could someone verify with Sims that he gets this? He needs it before getting off the interstate into unknown cell coverage.
