Bernie's weird reticence around discussing race issues outside of an economic context was, and continues to be, a problem and a source of disappointment. I still would prefer him to have won the primary and I even think a hypothetical Sanders Presidency would be better, on the whole, for oppressed groups - aside from his personal awkwardness in talking about some of those issues, I think he has more genuine fire in the belly when it comes to fighting for justice and equality. I think he would probably appoint better people and push harder for good policy even when it's politically inconvenient.

But ultimately, it's not only my decision to make. I voted for him, a lot more people voted for Clinton, and it's not reasonable or fair to say they didn't know what they were doing. If we want the progressive movement to continue to flourish, to capitalize on the awareness that Bernie brought, we have to look critically at the deficiencies in his message and in the movement's message. We can't handwave away the failings of that campaign because that's an enthusiastic first step on the road back to obscurity.

If you want something to hold over the head of Clinton supporters right now in the electability argument (which kind of makes you an rear end in a top hat, IMO), I think the stronger case involves emphasizing his remarkable favorable numbers and lack of ready-made scandals. People overstate the gentleness with which the Clinton campaign treated him; I don't think he gets enough credit for just how much he managed to remain well-liked during the primary.

That being said, what is the use in speculating about how Bernie personally would be doing now? I do think Clinton was a risky choice for the Democratic nominee, and it's reasonable to have a conversation about what the party (and the political left in general) should prioritize in a candidate in the future. We should learn from Clinton's shortcomings just as we should learn from Sanders'. But why frame it as "Bernie would be doing better!" necessarily? He would have been risky as well, albeit in different ways.

I think it's at least partly how we're taught about racism in school and media and stuff as well. Like, I remember learning that it's bad, and learning of examples of it, but they were all things like slurs or open discrimination, and while it didn't teach me that racism didn't exist anymore (I remember chastising my grandparents and other relatives for saying racist things back when my age was in the single digits even) I had no knowledge of the many, considerably more subtle and insidious ways it takes shape.
