Also worth considering that an engine lathe like that usually uses a motor operating at a fixed speed of around 1500 RPM, with belts and gears to adjust the speed. So to get that ~30 RPM output, he's got it on the largest pulley and the back gears engaged, for an effective torque multiplication of around 50:1. e: like, a good question to ask yourself before trying that stunt is: "am I strong enough that I could use a chisel to peel a piece of steel pipe like an apple?" cause the lathe can do that all day long. A mix-up with the signaller meant that this driver got a chance to see just how much space you actually have between two Intercity 125s on adjacent tracks while investigating a fault with his locomotive: The guy's fine (or at least as fine as you can be after a near miss like that): https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/kyle-beck-safety-digest/near-miss-at-kyle-beck-3-august-2016

I actually watched a documentary on crash test dummies* last night and it is weeks of preparation for a 15 second crash which they analyze for weeks afterwards. I'm not sure if it's a great spectator event. You probably end up standing quite a distance away from the crash as a safety measure since you've got debris flying everywhere. *not the ones that mmmm mmmm mmmm mmmm

I think this is the case for most experiment-based fields (and a lot of the sciences). The field work/actual experiment is pretty great/interesting but the setup and subsequent extreme analysis can be mind-numbingly boring.

NHTSA does not-so-public tours for car-based companies at least. Usually you're on a catwalk with a plexiglass divider. You can film but you're not supposed to make money off of the videos as an observer.
