I actually had some big utility program download fail on me earlier this year on a day when I was having connection issues and really needed to get it downloaded, and I thought for the first time since like 1999 that it would be nice to have a download manager. Thank goodness it still exists, I guess!

I've been using jdownloader for quite some time now. It works well in those situations.

I've used them interchangeably but I called them programs generally. Now I say app to distinguish apps on your mobile device versus a program on your computer.

Btw I've just caught up with the thread and I'd like to thank you for your posts about your days doing UX and stuff at Microsoft. That was pretty dope to read.

Fwiw, "application" or "app" has always been the preferred term in Apple land, at least back to the beginning of the Mac. I think "program" was fairly common in the Apple II era, but they standardized it for the Mac as it was less ambiguous.

The first time I ever heard people talking about apps was with their iPhone when those first came out. I just assumed it was some cutsie apple specific term, especially since app... Apple.

And those stupid commercials. "THERE IS AN APP, FOR THAT!"

Little did I know that before long it would be the standard word for computer program. The nightmare has become reality.
Even though I agree with you and it is awful and stupid, ... oh, Keith Atherton beat me to it, but a guy I know who was at Microsoft in the 1980s said they called programs "apps" then too, which made me feel a little better about the seeming-buzzclickpow-intentionality awfulness of the term. I am not sure where I got the idea that programs were called "utilities" though, but I definitely called them that in the 1990s.

Yeah App is good because it's quick to say but nowadays can be sort of ambiguous or misleading. Clearly we need to bring back? progz.

Now I want (somebody else) to breed a bite-sized apple -- hey, they did it with tomatoes -- and call it an applet. And then it could be the fruit serving of a balanced breakfast for those of us who prefer coffee over orange juice.

Java applet would also be a good drink name for Irishing your coffee* with one of the various apple-flavored whiskies that are trendy now.

*Edit: a proper Irish Coffee is an actual mixed drink with cream and sugar, but around here we take it black and half whisky.

Those are the stock readouts for that game. It came out in 1978. It just looks old because pinball cabinet design didn't really change much from the 1940s-1980.
