I was quite surprised by the lack of teary-eyed intro performed by a wraith. I'm guessing they won't drop the 'fat man spitting all over a cake' section though, that's always a hit with the fans!

MISCELLANY (July 2013)

From Chris Roberts, Fearless Leader:

"Owning a factory is the equivalent of crafting."
Factory owners can hire players or NPCs to fill any role, i.e. hauling or security.
When hiring employees, you can either provide ships for each purpose or hire employees with their own ships.
NPC employee wages are based on their quality level.
Player employee quality is rated by the employer, and the employer is rated by the employee.
Ships are also manufactured at production nodes, which are player-ownable, with the probable exception of Capital ships.
We will not be able to 'invent' new items, but we will be able to upgrade factory equipment to create items with different levels of quality.
Mining will be skill-based; if you don't do it the right way (example: targeting an ore vein with a laser), there is a chance the asteroid will be destroyed along with any ore.

In SC you will have to pay landing tariffs, you’ll have running costs and will have to pay taxes on the goods you sell (in the more civilized parts of the universe). These taxes pay for the infrastructure and law and order (just like in the real world). By properly simulating how a real economy operates (as there is always a cost to services but almost no one models that) the hope is to avoid some of the issues that you’ve seen in other MMOs.

With the economy, I want the players to feel like what they do has an impact on the events that unfold," he explains. "It's about ownership: I want players to feel like they're becoming part of the lore, the history of this galaxy.

When will I be able to visit my factory on the procedural planets and watch my low quality minimum wage workers mop the floors?

All CIG has to do to keep the money going is to show the diehard cultists that they're "Trying really hard guys!" and that will be enough for them to limp across the finish line.

If they go radio silent the narrative gets disrupted and they wake up from ~dreams~ and start flipping out too soon. This way they can still act like the plucky underdog who, oh gee shucks, reached for the stars and had to scale back for "retail" but don't worry guys! All the dreams are coming in future patches!

The cognitive dissonance is truly driving these people insane.

quote:

Here is one of the difficulties of making player econ positioning in game play.

Basically IRL knowledge can do this. We provide credentials as proof of knowledge, and most often the knowledge or skill is beyond us to be masters of all things we might need.

Now if the demand is knowledge, and the knowledge is sufficiently complex and ambiguous. Like say diagnosing an illness based on basic symptoms. yeah that's a real challenge and high knowledge demand no doubt.
But few games are going to manage a system of complicated enough game knowledge demands, that the knowledge makes for lasting sustainable economic positions to hold down as game play.

However big a matrix of ship parts we can make. If it ultimately distills down to specific optimal combinations.
Then we should just assume now that that optimal chocie data will be public posted online for all to read, and basically provide for themselves personally, the "mastery" needed to have an optimally OC'd ship setup.

The skill of "knowledge" is what trivial pursuit is based on.
And to ensure that game is played to actually challenge the real knowledge of the player, and not test their google-foo.
We play this game live in person. Trivial Pursuit is a popular game.hard to find a bar in 5 mile radius not hosting a trivial pursuit game night once a week.
But it's no accented that such a popular game is not so widely spread as an online played game.

If we make the "challenge skill" of our game be knowledge we are just saying this is not a real challenge segment and all players can just lookup the right answers online freely. No challenge demand has been insisted upon.
So this system would be hard pressed to provide to players an ongoing sustainable economic position in the PU over time.

So i believe that for CIG to make part OCing be something that not all players can self provide, we'd need this OCing to have some form of challenge/skill demand that goes beyond just looking up the answers.

If the challenge is have the knowledge, and i
A: am alone in my house
+
B: have access to the internet
=
why am i doing this and not looking at porn? Then how is this expected to have challenged anyone or been a means to make a paycheck in PU if everyone has access to the same data to do it right themselves?

The challenge of the skill of knowledge, is only genuinely created when we undertake that challenge live in front of someone, able to prove it came from within our own brains and was not just being read back from something someone else wrote.
Knowledge makes for a perfectly fine challenge to a solo player game.
But for a form of player compeditive game play, knowledge as the challenge skill to demonstrate mastery of, can only really be achieved as a live in person challenge.

I know what you mean.

Hell, I can't even decide which way I'd prefer to watch RSI/CIG end.

On the one hand the sudden doors locked, lights off approach would be hilarious for a few days as news swept the web, but I'd quite like to watch the slow, gradual decline where at the end Chris is still lording it over a handful of non-leavers, funded by a handful of remaining faithful's disability cheques.
