That one seems to be getting most of the attention when there's like, six others that are equally meaningful. I was sold on it upon learning that A) it's not actually a sales tax B) all the small business owners I know are for it because they're not within $24.75 million of being subject to it.

Wish I had some pictures, but was at my in-laws small suburban town Snohomish for Trick or Treating and all over were two sets of identical signs: Preserve Snohomish, Vote Yes on Prop 2 Vote No on Prop 2, Preserve Snohomish! Guess no matter what Snohomish is being preserved!

I looked up Prop 2 and apparently it is to change their appointed manager/council style of government to elected mayor/council. Pretty far leap to think that either side has much to do with preserving the city.

RuanGacho posted:I would be more ok with it if it was some sort of civil procedure, but as designed it basically puts the cops right back into the "you are a military force going potentially into a hot zone" This is a civil procedure, you can especially tell because the evidentiary requirement is "preponderance of the evidence" rather than "beyond a reasonable doubt". The language is very similar to existing restraining orders, and in fact was taken from protection orders taking firearms away in possible domestic violence situations. Cops are mainly focused on criminal law enforcement, but are also an arm of the civil court. Ultimately the difference between civil and criminal law in our system has more to do with who is bringing the case, and to what level they are held to as far as evidence. You are all completely right that it's ultimately tied to our lovely justice system which is rife with abuse and possible abuse, and is possibly a very dangerous mindset to have about mental health. I voted yes mainly because I weighed those problems against the hopefully bigger gain of keeping guns away from those who are suicidal. Like shootings and dumb poo poo happen, but the effect on guns on suicide is huge. But I completely get why people would not vote for this. e: I of course, can be wrong, I'm a latte socialist, not a lawyer. foobardog fucked around with this message at 18:15 on Nov 2, 2016 |

Suicide seems like a personal choice. Perhaps we should create suicide booths. Give people more options besides guns. Just saying -if- I was suicidal and I was told to turn in my guns I'd probably just do the deed right then. This just seems to put everyone at more risk, especially cops and paranoid-suicidal type. Those who are actually not at risk and just being harassed are the only ones who will suffer when they try to get their property back. I highly doubt that will be as easy as getting them confiscated in the first place.

My favorite approach for the No on 97 is the "it's not a constitutional amendment, so the gub'mint can spend your dollars however they want!" Because now any time something isn't specifically codified into the constitution, it's subject to the personal whim of politicians?

Here's hoping the near future fixes that before the distant future has to deal with it.

I'm really glad I did my due diligence before filling out my WA ballot now, because I hadn't heard of the Mary Yu vs. David DeWolf race yet. DeWolf looks like exactly the kind of guy you don't want having any kind of legal authority.

In Oregon I got a booklet that says your vote is secret, but the fact you voted is not. It looked like a GOTV effort instead of anything else, but it reminded me of that. If I had to guess they have preliminary results broken up by county, and that information is (going to be) public anyway so that's probably what they're drawing from.

Anyone can download the WA state voter rolls, listing all WA voters, their addresses, and the last time they voted. It's a huge file, so good luck opening it without special software. Crashes excel when I've tried for work. https://www.sos.wa.gov/elections/vrdb/

In OR your voter registration is confirmed via postcard so your loving name/address/party are visible to anybody who handles mail between Salem and you. So that's helpful.

People who vote tend to keep their voting address up-to-date so its pretty useful.
