Did you even read that whole article? The reason his neighbors sold was because the city of Las Vegas, through the Clark County Government (which, if you remember, is the highest law in the land according to the Bundys), got the ranchers to sell their land in order for it to be set aside for tortoise conservation. Yes, the tortoise was a factor, but unless you're interested in making the argument that the endangered species act is some trifling irrelevance, that doesn't really matter. There was a land shortage caused by urban expansion. That resulted in agricultural land (the family ranches) being less valuable as agland than as developed land (or in this case, as setoffs that made development possible). This is a story that has played out thousands and thousands of times across the country because, get this, the United States is no longer an early nineteenth century agrarian society defined by a patchwork of small family estates.

Yes, land policy is complicated and there are often winners and losers. That does not somehow mean this was automatically a case of "government overreach." There was a higher and better use of that land, and it was achieved through the sale of grazing rights on public land in order to set off habitat destruction associated with urban expansion. This is a good thing. The alternatives are either the city of Las Vegas has a hard boundary past which is cannot expand, or expansion comes without any consideration for environmental degradation.

Nevada is poo poo agricultural land. It always has been, and it always will be. The rest of the world does not have to freeze itself in time because Cliven Bundy likes being a hobby farmer.

It seems so strange to me that people buy into the complaints of Bundy-style "ranchers" enough to forget that Nevada is a massive desert to begin with. Let's not forget that Bundy is such a crappy rancher that he can't be bothered to lift a finger for his animals yet demands to have much more land given to him by force.

Anyway, we're already seeing the utterly predictable attempt for Bundy and family to encourage much more right wing terrorists?

It's a very odd choice to support the institution of the legal system by actually going to jury duty and obeying the rules while there but reject the institution of the law itself on the grounds that "the government didn't storm the place and let politicians in"

I don't think it's necessarily binary like that

Recognition of its malleability - when institutional heads responsible for drafting and executing the law themselves appear ambivalent - should b enough to understand the factors that drive civil discourse

absolutism isn't a really convincing argument on its own, which is how we came to here

so I sat down to vote tonight and was looking over third party candidates, and read the bio for Alyson Kennedy / Osborne Hart [Socialist Workers Party]

quote:

For the working class, the greatest of all battles ahead is to throw off the image of ourselves that we do not have the capacity to organize and to learn, to transform ourselves and all social and human relations as we fight to end capitalist rule and establish workers power. The capitalists fear what's building up amongst working people to their slow burning global depression.

To meet this challenge we have joined protests against police brutality demanding cops who kill- from Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, to Philando Castile in Minnesota to cattle rancher Jack Yantis in Council, Idaho to Robert Lavoy Finicum in Oregon- be charged and jailed. We demand free political prisoners from Puerto Rican independence fighter, Oscar Lopez, to Leonard Peltier and Mumia Abu-Jamal. We are part of the fight for a government funded public works program at union scale wages, for $15 and a union; for free and medical care for all; to guarantee women the right to abortion. We demand an end to Washington's colonial rule of Puerto Rico.

lmao yes, police brutality killed the tarpman, right
