So are we supposed to be teaching Chinese in our schools because it is the language with the most native speakers and a better time investment than Spanish, or are we supposed to accept that it is nigh impossible to learn even when living and working in China for years, on account of the baffling inscrutability of its four (four!) tones? Getting mixed messages.

Figuring out how many native speakers there are of Chinese is an interesting question because I assume China reports the entire population as such, but when they say Chinese they mean Mandarin and the majority of people in China are absolutely not native Mandarin speakers. It's taught in school and everyone has to learn it but it's not what they learned at home. Spanish might actually have more. Just saying all Chinese languages in one big lump is like saying native speakers of Romance, it doesn't make sense. Maybe it's been long enough that they've stomped the other languages down but if it is genuinely the most common native language that'd be a recent thing.

There's still a whole lot more "speakers" than any other language other than maybe English, though. It would be interesting to see a metric that tried to measure by fluent speakers rather than native speakers but it's probably straight up impossible.

Yeah I have no idea how you'd measure by fluent speakers. Total speakers is certainly either English or Mandarin. Thinking more, so your native language is what you learn at home. That means your parents have to speak it, but in China so many kids are raised by grandparents that they would also have to. There's absolutely no way that grandparents are majority Mandarin speaking. The 30s-40s generation maaaaaaaaaaybe but past that definitely not. It's still going to be a while before regional languages are stamped out, and even that isn't guaranteed since some of them are reviving. Cantonese was never effectively reduced, Sichuan is alive and well, I've read that Wu is coming back over in the region around Shanghai. SA isn't technically blocked but the hosting company has really hardcore DDOS protection, and the captcha for that requires Google to function. So it's nearly impossible to get to the forums without a VPN just because Google is blocked. There are a lot of sites like that in China, they aren't explicitly blocked but since Google functions are embedded in so many websites the Google blocks make them unusable. They're kicking around the idea of blocking all websites that aren't registered in China. I think the party regrets ever allowing internet access, they'd like a North Korean style intranet instead.

Oh yeah, I saw a good Chinar thing a few days ago. There was some work on new pipes in the street in front of my building. On the corner are some food stalls that dump their oil and boiled food water into the drains about thirty times per day, and it's always a wet, oily mess when I walk by. The workers had to dig out new drains to go with the new pipes. They had finished the others and were making the new ones (two of them) that the food stalls prefer to dump in because they are lazy and these drains are right in front of them. These guys are trying to pour wet cement and/or shape it and the people at the food stalls are shouting at them for standing in the spot where they want to pour their slimy water. Like, they can't see with their own eyes that someone is working and building a new drain, and the cement is wet. The construction workers are point at the completed drains a few meters away, but the food stall people are scoffing and shouting. I came back 30 minutes from the supermarket and didn't see the construction guys, who I assume are on lunch. The food stall people had dumped all their water and oil onto the freshly poured concrete and the guys tools, because they couldn't be bothered to lug the little pot just a few meters away.

I was wondering why I smelled strong engine fumes in my house, so I went onto my balcony and was blasted by the stink of a chainsaw. Some guys had just murdered half the trees outside my windows and now I'm pretty upset. Those trees gave privacy and a very, very, very much-needed sound barrier from the constant cars and the retarded pharmacy that blasts a 15-second looping advertisement from 10am to 10pm. On the other side, in the apartment building, is constant construction that's been going on for weeks as two or three guys try to build a new elevator that is completely unnecessary here and there's never a wait for one we already have. I believe these guys will be working on this project until Spring Festival the rate they are going now. I have like 4-5 more months on this lease and now I am bummed. If the sound of that pharmacy ad creeps through my windows into my room, I am going flip out.
