It started well before Obama. Here's POTUSHead's summary of Freep history from 2010:quote:FreeRepublic is the home for the conservative movement online since 1997, and by virtue of longevity claims the mantle of authentic conservative opinion, which is amazing once you realize how crazy they've always been. Run by noted wheelchair-bound anti-socialist Jim Robinson, their earliest community accomplishments include death threats against Clinton and going all internet detective on the bar owner that refused to serve Jenna Bush alcohol in 2001. JimRob, paragon of stability, has been threatening to take up arms against the government since 1999. The LA Times has a permanent injunction against FreeRepublic quoting their articles in full, one of many news organizations that refuse to be even tangentially associated with them. Drudge stopped linking to Free Republic "...because they were doing racist stuff over the [Clinton love child] and it hit me, one night I was there, I think it was the first night of the story, maybe it was the second night of the DNA chase, I click on and I see this headline, 'friend of the family Baby.'" Former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow used to be a freeper, but they called him a pansy. They hold Inaugural Galas (the first one had Huckabee's band as the entertainment, which is hilarious because they hate his liberal criminal-releasing rear end now) and anti-everything marches which are sometimes covered by CSPAN. They made Sean "smugdog" Hannity cry in his oatmeal because "everyone I knew basically left because of so much childish, immature personal attacks. The propensity there to eat their own. And a lot of the people-- most of the people--I knew that were on it left." Tonelok provided a fine post summarizing some of the crazy that's happened over the years and includes a rant by JimRob against George W. Bush for not being conservative enough. They hate on Mormons enough that ex-Freeper Mormons have their own watch site. They spend 7 grand a month on system admin for a website that hasn't been updated in any significant way since 1997. And for their moment of triumph, they got Dan Rather fired over Memogate. Tonelok's post: quote:If wikipedia is right, along with a couple of critical or spinoff sites, somebody who has spent 12 years on FR would have seen:

The best Freep event is still purging RINO Romney supporters in the 2012 primaries and then turning around and purging every lingering RINO who wouldn't support Romney in the general along with anyone who asked if formerly purged Romney supporters could now come back. It guaranteed a userbase of nothing but lickspittles and sycophants concerned only with conformity and finding and outing RINO traitors.

The 2012 election night is my favorite Freep moment. They bought into the skewed polls and didn't see it coming, their slow realization that something was wrong began at about 8:30 or so and it was glorious to behold.

It's so amusing to be that Freepers have declared Donald Trump as the plucky hero that will stand up to the power brokers, global elite, and general puppet masters in D.C. If you believe the Info Wars conspiracies, and give the Liberal Underground even partial credit for all the nefarious poo poo they are said to have done, you think that Donald loving Trump is the man with the intelligence, integrity, and fortitude to take it on? He'd sell out the instant they gave him profitable angle. How do you look at a greasy silver-spoon businessman and see Nathan Hale?
