HardDiskD posted:you mean when people's parents dictated who they would marry That was commonest among the higher economic classes, a lot of peasants did marry who they wanted. Among the peasantry, bloodline wasn't that important (much less family alliances) and no one had that much money. It varies by region but a lot of indigents got to date and whatnot before dying of anal blowout from drinking poo water with too many fleas in it

It's not that crazy if you're into your music or seeing america out of the main cities.

Yeah, I hate noise, so my next apartment is a top floor corner. I had to pay more for it, but if you want a thing there's a good chance you might need to pay for that thing.

CharlestonJew posted:Guessing the 210 lb dude is actually noisy af when he walks around and his previous neighbors were too scared to confront him about it Given that they directly filed an HOA complaint rather than speaking to their neighbors, almost certainly keyed cars, and filed a false police report I'd be very disinclined to assume that the new neighbors also have reasonable expectations about noise level in a semi-shared environment like an apartment complex.

or the neighbors could be huge dicks, yeah

This is why, if your neighbor politely complains about the noise, you tone it down, wait a bit, and file a noise complaint about them to the police. That will make their complaints look retaliatory - always escalate first. No but seriously, if you live in an apartment building, there's noise. I'm much more sympathetic to solving the problem by saying "okay you both make all the noise you want" than "okay you both stay quiet". To me a complaint is warranted if and only if they're actually intentionally creating noise for the sole purpose of annoying neighbors. (Probably some maximum decibel level to cover all the bases.) Something like "tie goes to who is more self-actualized" would be my actual solution but I dunno how to enforce that. I don't know what it is to be really bothered by noise though, so I'm sure that colors my perspective. I'm the opposite of Pick, I usually choose louder apartments so I pay less or get more space or whatever because they're undesirable due to noise.

It honestly baffles me that apartment complexes aren't like dormitories, where you can choose ones designed for quieter or louder lifestyles. I mean, you can in a de facto sense, but I've never seen it made explicit when it's one of the driving needs of people seeking a home.

This guy has to be leaving something out. She's getting sweet pay, benefits ets and though I'm sure it's a strain in some aspects, they probably aren't living hand to mouth or anything. Maybe he's a lazy slob and not pulling his weight around the house or something.

Every apartment should be built with decibel meters and rent adjusted based on whether you are above or below the average.

Mocking Bird posted:If you have a history of drug use/OD in your family cocaine and amphetamines stop being "fun occasional party drugs" and become very scary. I think calling it a hard drug is fair, especially if they planned to use to the point they were going to be so high it would make their sober buddy uncomfortable. Yeah this is a big reason I don't drink a lot and stick with weed or occasional shrooms to get buzzed, never touched anything else. I was friends with too many burnouts years ago and seeing someone flip out over something trivial because they're an abusive/angry drunk or they're high on something else is never fun. Plus my biological dad never got out of the "party phase" of his life and turned himself into an alcoholic, drug addicted loser who lives in a crappy single-wide trailer and has no friends or family willing to help after he burned so many bridges with dumb, reckless poo poo. I guess the short of it is to be considerate of anyone around you who hasn't had the same experiences and don't ditch them if they're not cool with your drug habits.
