Republican had 14+ years of smearing Hillary with little substance. The Democrats did not establish Donald as a scumbag early enough for it to really sink in (also cf. polls on when people formed their decision who to vote for), opted to not keep up the pressure for long enough for any oppo drop to stick (except for getting women to turn out), and quite possibly took "we go high" too much to heart across the whole operation instead of applying that only to the visible parts of it.

But this time it's worse because who the hell knows what is going to happen, and if you really want to freak out remember that 2018 is a very very rough ride for the Dems even without this. The last two years of this term could reverse so, so much of what the Democratic Party worked for many many decades on.
