I am a guy who would have voted for Sanders in the US. He was not likeable, though. His hoarse voice from a lifetime spent shouting things/over people was a telltale sign that he was a guy who did not get his way as much as he liked. People pick up on that stuff.

And being branded a ~socialist~ by all of the news media only plays well to some working class people, certainly not all of them. I can just imagine Trump rolling out the quotes about his position being great until he ran out of other people's money etc. right left and centre.

Anyway, we're where we're at!

he was provably likeable according to polls, albeit only at a +5-10 basis. Clinton was -15, though, which is historically weak. I'm not saying Sanders was a great or even good candidate, just that he was better than the worst candidate in history, Hillary Rodham Clinton

Honestly, Bernie Sanders wouldn't have fared any better than Clinton. Trump's campaign messaged simply resonated too well with a segment whose size and influence have been severely underestimated for 3 elections now. Trump's message was simple and it appealed to feelings. His message had enemies you could hate and a plan to defeat them. It doesn't matter that the enemies are made up and the plans are unfeasible, it gives you something to fight for, it creates conviction. It doesn't matter that most of the poo poo Clinton was accused of weren't real, Trump (with the help of the GOP and to a lesser extent the Sanders primary campaign) made sure even her supporters had doubt. To Trump voters, democrats, the left, liberals, they're all enemies, they're all telling you you're racist, that you don't matter, making you bake cakes for gay weddings and letting men in dresses go to the bathroom with your daughter, trampling on the constitution, putting minorities' kids and their futures before your own. The sheer size of this segment of the population goes by unnoticed, they're not represented on the media, and you don't come across them on the Internet, because they're not the stereotypical racist old white guy you would imagine, they're cashiers, mechanics, the guy at the car wash, people who won't go completely white supremacist on you but are secretly worried about the Black Lives Matter movement.

Neither Clinton nor Sanders had the perfect storm of boogeymen and circumstance to rally voters like Trump. Bernie couldn't overcome the DNC preferring Clinton, meanwhile Trump steamrolled through his ENTIRE party openly attacking a front runner in an unprecedented way, and made every single one of them grudgingly bend the knee through the sheer will of "the people".

I think in hindsight, Trump's presidency was inevitable. Some may want to blame Sanders supporters voting for Trump, but I'm willing to bet Bernie's people overwhelmingly voted Clinton. Others may think Hillary wasn't a good candidate, but she was. I think in the end, You Can't Stop the Trump just turned out to be true.

I think you're right. I don't think there was a mechanism for undercutting Trump once he solidified himself in the Republican primary.

So if the polls were all wrong then are all the polls wrong?

Is Obama's approval rating really that high if his "third term" was just rejected so decisively? Are the polls about legal marijuana and LGBT rights etc. also wrong as well???

It's actually hard to say. Depends almost entirely on if they blame the "most liberal platform ever" or the candidate for the loss. If it's Clinton who the party blames then we continue shifting toward the Warren/Sanders side of the aisle.

Since angry white guys who won it for Trump, there's a decent chance we blame Clinton and continue on with the progressive policy.

Lipstick Apathy
Anyone, anyone who came across as a halfway decent person would've won against Trump. He was basically telling the American people not to vote for him every time he opened his mouth; it could not be any more obvious that the guy's retarded and just shouts whatever insane thing is going through his mind at the time. Unfortunately for everyone, the Democrats decided to field a lizard person in a woman skin against him, and she/it could not even manage to create the illusion of being halfway decent.

The guy who made wonderful sound bites about how he wants to raise taxes however would probably not. When no opposition spends months - or in Clinton's case - years smearing everything you ever said or done and looking how to frame it in the worst possible way, you look like a great candidate. Bernie would have had other problems than Clinton, but maybe even bigger ones. But hindsight is 20/20 and we will never know.
