What 'enormous turnout' are you seeing, cause Trump won the election having received less votes than Romney or McCain The only reason the democrats lost was because a large part of their voter base stayed home. Maybe they'll learn their lesson and not run a centrist warhawk in bed with big business next time

The question I'm asking is whether the Liberals or NDP will learn from the Democrats' failure and not allow the disenfranchised to sit and (continue to) rot while Conservatives try and tap into the same populist "gently caress-the-system" sentiment that Trump and the Republican party were able to. I mean, I know the answer--both the Liberals and NDP are going to gently caress poo poo up so badly that we're going to end up with our own Trump in 2019--but I'm hoping that Trudeau and/or Mulcair (or his replacement, assuming the NDP were paying attention last night, toss his rear end out, and start moving away from the centre) and their parties will at least try and prevent us from going off the cliff with the US and UK. Oh for gently caress sake...

No they won't because the Liberals and NDP in Canada are even more out of touch with reality than the US Democrats. Expect a CPC majority next election.

The liberals did tap into that sentiment, from the other direction, with the promises of electoral reform and a change to economic approach. Trudeau was positioned as a fresh face of change regardless of his pedigree (similar to how a wealthy old white guy who was a democrat for most his life was able to tap into the angry working class vote). They aren't going to govern from that direction but they certainly campaigned from it.

The left only hope now is to stop accusing everyone who isn't 100% on board with the Tumblr standard of left wing ideology of being literal Nazis and instead try to make the left side of the political spectrum more forgiving of the human tendancy to sometimes stray from left wing ideological purity but that isn't going to happen.

The big thing for next election will be if Trudeau keeps his big promises like electoral reform and, I hate to say it, weed. He ran on a very Obama-esque platform of hope and change, and one reason why Clinton did so badly was left wing voters who got suckered in by Obama's messaging being disappointed by his centrist governance (hampered of course by Republican obstructionism). Trudeau has no obstructionist excuse since he has a majority, and if his words turn out to have been empty ones (Libs libbing) I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a populist backlash in 2019. That's long enough after yesterday for Trump to have been normalized and the visceral reaction of "ugh we're better than those Americans" to have worn off. Whoever is the next NDP leader also has an impossible task but the good news is I'm pretty sure they have no competent candidates anyway so there was never any hope of them responding well.

If I'm the NDP I would push up the date for a new leader to be named and I would start hammering on Trudeau missing the mark on big promises now and start energizing disadvantaged working class people before the Conservatives do. Secondly I would double down on getting competent people in leadership of provincial parties and start turning the tide of every new Premier being right leaning, but lol NDP.
