You're right, but I would argue that that's what a political opponent is.

The American right wing's totalized understanding of faith, politics, and personal morality as a single arena isn't a blunder or a disease. They're right, and understanding this works to their benefit. They approach politics with a conviction that we should aspire to.

I'm on board with the Christian notion of not hating other human beings and even having love for them, but sometimes loving someone means letting them know how angry and disappointed you are and, more importantly, not letting them destroy others and degrade themselves in the process.

a political opponent is someone who disagrees with me about whether or not putting the means of production in the hands of the workers is the right move

a political opponent is someone who reads bakunin instead of takagi kenmyo

a political opponent is someone who believes that americans need access to guns to defend themselves

someone who thinks someone like me shouldn't be allowed to work, rent an apartment, own property, buy goods and services, and ultimately believes the world would be better off if i were dead is not a political opponent. they are a threat. and you don't deal with threats by hoping they'll go away, or wishing they'd understand your humanity. you deal with them by either avoiding them at all costs, or confronting them before they confront you. for my part, i plan on getting out as soon as possible because this country is clearly not someplace i want to be in the short term, and possibly not even the long term, but until then i will resist this government with everything i can. i usually resist the urge to take part in direct action, because i think that as a trans woman i'm in a position to be abused by police in a way that cis people aren't, but quite frankly i don't think that matters. what we do now defines who we are to our children, our children's children, and so on. if we want them to grow up in a united states that is ruled by love and compassion instead of fear and hatred, we have to act now.

Congrats on the engagement HEY GAL! I'm assuming you'll finish up your thesis then move to the UK / Europe?

I'm not too worried about Trump himself, what is gonna be much worse is the fact that the GOP now firmly controls both houses of Congress and the presidency so Trump is going to rubber stamp every terrible piece of legislation the GOP wants to pass. Regardless of your political beliefs there's going to be some really scary stuff that gets passed, Pence will take Bathroom Warrior federal, they'll pass a law making it legal to discriminate based on your religious beliefs. How about strict national voter ID laws or other ways to suppress voters? The filibuster and Obama's veto were the only things holding them back and now that's gone, it'll be like the Bush years all over again except probably worse. Also like the Bush administration it's going to be a spectacular failure, so one small bit of silver lining is the Republicans will have no one to blame but themselves when it all goes to poo poo.

I think most non-Trump supporting Americans are still experiencing collective whiplash that we actually Brexited. I certainly was convinced Clinton would win by a significant margin because all the polls were saying that, but it turns out the polls were really wrong and nothing matters.

It's going to be a rough couple decades, especially for any sort of minority group as this election has legitimized racism, xenophobia, sexism, and general bigotry. I think it's a very relevant topic to the thread because we have a lot of LGBT posters facing the reality of many of their rights getting stripped away in the name of religious freedom.

I wouldn't even worry about their responsibility. The state of their conscience (or their soul, if you want to think about it in those terms) is up to them. I don't say "hatred is unjustified when directed towards human beings" I say it's wasted, i.e. it's pointless from a utilitarian point of view.

What matters is -- protecting the people they threaten, and removing their power to threaten in the first place. In the worst case scenario this could very well mean killing fascists. My question to Mo Tzu was not completely rhetorical. It's possible that my being dead would be such a powerful warning to others that it would outweigh any good I might do in what's left of my life, or that so few fascists reform that the outliers aren't worth considering.

But do it out of overflowing love for the oppressed and anger at the condition of the world, because that will lead you to better ends than doing it out of spite.

There's a whole lot of reasons for why any given person voted the way they did. And while sure, some of the people who voted for Trump really do hold despicable views and may indeed have despicable intentions, that's not why the other 58.5 million people who voted for him voted that way. They're all people too, and a significant portion of them are also trying, desperately, to make themselves heard, not out of some mustache-twirling hatred for minorities, but because their livelihoods are vanishing and their towns are dying and they feel like they have no future and that the establishment politicians give not one single gently caress.

I had a much longer post written at one point, but it was a lot of dumb :words: to arrive at the same conclusion- dehumanizing the political opposition isn't how things get better, it's how things get worse. We're all in this together, after all.
