A person who called for banning the immigration of Muslim Americans. A person who openly mocked a disabled reporter. A person who showed profound ignorance every time he stepped on a debate stage.

Do you remember how the 47% tape or Dukakis in the tank or Dean's yell are remembered for helping tank their campaigns?

The shock is around the fact that none of that poo poo mattered whatsoever. The shock is around that Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio would have probably done just as well.

And like there are a dozen things you can nitpick about. If those campaign tanking moments actually were campaign tanking moments or the fact that the worst of the Trump presidency is probably going to be based on him being a Republican more than anything else or if people should've known better about who the people in our country are.

But people are shocked because they assumed that people would rise to the occasion or at least not vote for that guy. And that's not what happened. They voted for a guy openly hostile to women and people of color and Muslims. And going "WELL ACTUALLY..." and simply talking about Hilary's failure to assume almost every single poll that showed her strategy was working was wrong doesn't make you some amazing realist. Also remember that for all the outrage over Obama the GOP could never get poo poo to stick for 8 full years. The same cannot be said of the Clintons. The GOP absolutely blew Clinton poo poo out of proportion, but the Clintons allowed the seed to be planted in a way that Obama never did.

I was listening to someone on MSNBC a few days before the election and they said the problem is that Hillary and Bill believe they're always doing good, they believe the ends justify the means, and have been trained by GOP bullshit to instinctively believe criticism isn't valid. It sure seems to ring true, especially given that the first black president was able to magically be scandal free while those gosh darn GOP operatives keep bogging the Clintons down in imaginary scandals.

Obama was reflective, had self doubt, and had humility in ways the Clintons never showed. Whether they don't have those things or whether they have those things and didn't show them is an academic question now. The e-mail poo poo was just a symptom, and if it wasn't for the e-mails there would have been some other borderline poo poo the Clintons thought was okay and was legally okay but appeared sketchy.

Was anyone sounding alarm bells, like on a "we're going to lose this election" level, at any point? We all saw that Politico article from early this morning about how Bill was badgering people about the sort of midwest turnout disaster that ended up happening, and the data wonks all basically laughed it off. I remember there being a leak somewhere that the clinton camp considered releasing all of her e-mails, personal and not, in one big batch over a year before the election. That's the kind of poo poo people think Obama would have done because they think he views transparency highly. Who knows if it would have helped Clinton, or if Obama would have done that himself, but the perception definitely hurt her and in the end it couldn't have been worse than this.

Of course people probably assume Obama wouldn't be in a similar situation and they'd be right.

Don't forget, the Americans helped Yeltsin cover up massive electoral fraud which helped him steal the election from the Communists in 1996, and that's why Putin is in charge now.

While I agree that Clinton is not a great campaigner, you're also describing an inherent issue with running with the incumbent party. Gore inversely suffered distancing himself from Clinton.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm criticizing the people who are using your analysis to write off people who were upset because they assumed that everything about Trump was too egregious for Clinton not being a particularly great campaigner to matter.
