There aren't that many great politicians in CA if you think about it then. Jerry Brown? Gavin Newsom? The mayor of LA? All of them have significant flaws and will not appeal to someone from the midwest.

The only middle-American Trumpkin I know is my uncle and he isn't consciously "gently caress it all; I'm taking you all down with me" but he's very angry about his lot in life. He's one of the most working-class of all of us and has had to scratch out a living for himself working construction while his siblings went to college and spent holiday get-togethers as competitions to say how cultured they are. "Doing Shakespeare in London for a semester really changed me as an actress completely." That's something that a cousin said at the reunion last summer. But he is also a person whose interpersonal love is unerring. He helped build a winch to help my disabled aunt get her groceries up to her apartment. He lent me money to help me move to grad school, knowing I was training to be an even bigger dirty liberal than I already was. He always hugs me and tells me "I love you" whenever I say bye to him. And he loves calling Muslims "ragheads." I cannot write him off completely and be a smug liberal and say "Die, fucker!" but I cannot abide by him saying those things either. And that's really the conundrum we are facing. People who have legitimate anger, acting it out in ways that simply cannot be entertained and what we need to do in response.
