I do too. I talked briefly about this in the misogynoir thread but basically regular history teachers will keep choosing Great Men, Great Chain of Progress narrative because it's easy, you can cover the standardized test material and you won't get fired for hurting white feelings. They're not right to do so but it's the path of least resistance for people with increasingly little job security.

Textbook authors have no excuse tho.

It is also significantly less white than Seattle and Portland. What's Bill De Blasio doing? Too busy parading his black family around to show "he's one of the good ones"?

Do kids learn about John Brown? I came up in SC and know I didn't. He's a good role model that would be more relatable to the little white children than MLK or Malcolm X.

Anecdotally, in a Wisconsin private Catholic school I did get taught about him in both middle and high school, we were taught that he was a well-meaning crazy person who failed to incite a great slave rebellion but served as one of the final pushes into the Civil War. They went over his dying quote and framed him as a martyr. Overall I agree with that assessment historically. He was crazy, but he was also good and right.

I learned a weird version of John Brown I guess. I learned that he did a thing people thought was good, but most people thought that anyway and he just kinda went too far. But we also skipped over a lot of the civil war and basically went from signing the declaration to WW2, because Hitler is a historical villain without much nuance. Or at least I thought so.

The difference is Germany was hosed over by the Treaty of Versailles, but the rural whites here caused themselves to be hosed over by being purposefully isolationists, denying black people housing and jobs in their poo poo towns, and then those factory owners they were so loyal to worked in concert with the Republicans that played on their racism to move their factories overseas, leaving them with nothing but their dick in their hands.

But besides that, the same.

John Brown should be considered a national hero, and I think we should be pushing the white people that are sympathetic to do dirty work for us. I think some would.

I really don't feel like bailing on the US. I've had worse experiences with Indians, Arabs, and Asians in New York than white people and that represents a good chunk of the world. My father is from Ghana so I could just get citizenship there, but I like making money in New York and the variety of women.

I'm definitely feeling numb after Trump winning. I know the bar can be lowered in my mind, but my soul feels like it's already as low as it can get.

If I might engage in a bit of retrospection, I would humbly argue the real difference is in terms of scale. Take away the specifics of a bad treaty versus bad economic decisions, the real difference is that Hitler's main boogeyman, Jewish people, really wasn't that much of their overall population in relative terms - about 0.75% of their overall population. Hitler was free to bullshit people because of ignorance, but him saying the Jews were the problem is like Republicans saying Syrian refugees are the problem - it's almost comically absurd.

But in America, black people, Hispanics, Muslims, etc. are a huge, visible chunk of the population. The racism is already there swirling about. Many white people live in sheltered segregated communities but with the internet and modern media it's easy to see them anyway.

Essentially, I'd argue Germany was actually a case of economic anxiety being morphed into racial hatred. They already had racial hatred but it wasn't a primary motivation until the fascists came in. With America racism is the primary motivator and the economic anxiety is the aggravating factor. It's a reversal of causes, albeit the same outcome.

Which means the problem is the white middle class and upper class.

Nah, your average schmucks were just told they were being unfairly punished by a small group of elites who wound up running the economy into the ground out of sheer spite. Add in the left squabbling over bullshit purity tests failing to stop a rising fascist movement playing the dual fiddles of economic woes and racism and welp.

I definately tortured that analogy a bit/alot, but meh. It seems appropriate. If you want to discuss it, the WW2 thread is actually really good with a minimum of whining wheraboos.

A disproportinate amount of those votes are likely to be from PoC given they're more likely to fall into those income brackets. :v:

No, not at all. It aggravates me, but the democrats let the republicans disenfranchise black and brown voters so thems the brakes. Obama also didn't really do much for us w/r/t getting hunted by cops besides calling Baltimore protesters thugs. Maybe if he did a better job people would've been more enthusiastic about Hillary.

At least we won't have to worry about starting poo poo with Iran/Russia like we would've with Hillary.

I didn't see that in his 100 day plan, and I haven't heard him mention it in a while. I'm thinking Putin told him "no".

I am wondering how much the post-facts society has exacerbated the problems that led to Trump getting elected. Basically, the Information Age has brought about information overload, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish facts from lies, and causing communities to retreat into like-minded bubbles where the facts they're exposed to all suit their worldview. At that point, politics becomes a matter of tone rather than policy, because any policy, no matter how deranged, can create a vast, immersive reality where it looks like it works. What matters is its emotional content, whether it recognises your hurt and your pride. Racism didn't just spontaneously come into being alongside the Internet, but I can't help but wonder if this was part of what contributed to rural/deindustrialised white radicalisation - it didn't matter that Clinton's policies offered them objectively more help than Trump's, because in the age of modern communications technology, there is no such thing as objectivity - what mattered was that Clinton's milder tone means she felt comfortable with their brutal, horrifying status quo to them, while Trump's outrage felt appropriate to their situation. Insane racism won not only because of America's history of insane racism, but because the only one of the two competing ideologies that recognised and provided a cause for their pain was the insanely racist one, and because the post-facts society helpfully provided them with a reality where, say, turfing out black people wasn't racist or evil.

Some of my friends back home have had pretty wretched interactions yesterday, and a lot of other immigrants here in Sweden have told me about their family in the states. They're worried.

My sister was stalked few weeks back by some creep with a Gadsden flag waving from their truck while running. She goes to school at Hampshire which is comedically left. I'm...keeping in there.

Yes. I am an immigrant. My family's been here since the 80s, but now I have to wonder if some of my aunts and cousins who haven't gotten their citizenship yet are going to be deported because some red faced chunk of midwest mayo wanted to play at being a brownshirt.

Hopefully it never gets to the point where you have to violently defend poo poo, but it's becoming readily apparent that PoC in America are living in an environment that is openly hostile to their very existence. That sucks hard.
