Offline sync is the best part of Plex, especially when you're on a super long flight. I sync 10-12 movies to my iPad and I'm good to go for both flights. I'm actually surprised Netflix doesn't do this, I know Amazon Prime Video did.

Tatsujin posted:plex is great I don't get why people still use xbmc or kodi or whatever the gently caress is called these days. plex just works. if you've got media that's 4k or encoded in h.265 or whatever then plex is good to let it work on like a chomecast or raspberry pi or something like that. otoh if you're tv device is more powerful like a nuc but your nas is something really weak like a lot of them are then kodi is good too

i never really figured out what the 'ideal' config for this sort of thing is but i have plex running on its own esxi vm running on a nuc so it's nerdy enough anyway

I bought a $100 chromebox and put ~libre~elec + kodi on it and use my phone to control it. Works great, no transcoding nonsense required

my friend wants to setup his own Plex server with like 10-15 TB of storage so that him and 2 or 3 friends outside the network can stream from it. what's the YOSPOS-approved configuration? so far I pitched them a FreeNAS box but that seems like wild overkill.

I've got an old c2d backed with 6x4tb wd reds (running on sata replication on a poo poo lower power board) and 8gb of ram. I share my plex library with some buddies, but mostly use it cause if I'm traveling or something, and I've got a tv with an hdmi port I can just plug a fire stick into it, and bam my library is wherever.

the vast majority of my media is legit, certain things that are really off the wall and impossible to get (bootlegs, etc) are not a lot of it is bargain bin DVDs that have been ripped so mom can stream stuff 1500 miles away and a non trivial amount of that storage is for: 1) RAW photos going back since i started taking photos 2) time machine backups of our macbooks it kinda owns that you can get a consumer NAS for not a lot of money now 30 TO 50 FERAL HOG fucked around with this message at 20:30 on Nov 11, 2016 |

for every software product, there is a similar but lesser imitation that exists only because "it's open source" no professionals will use it, only open source developers, but it will always be used to justify indefensible points about the value of linux as a desktop OS
