Given that we know that the current economic policies are a failure, shouldn't the Democratic party be positioning itself for a different economic way? I mean how many decades of failure do we need before the political leadership of the US are declared insane? Doing the same thing over and over and we see that we get the same failures. Republicans are going to rapidly increase the collapse if they kill medicare, medicaid and everything else that they hate as free market capitalists. So they are only going to accelerate the collapse.

At some point in the future some fascist demagogue is going to rise up on a populist wave and cause some sort of civil and/or world war. The New Deal saved capitalism for a century, but we can see that it isn't working, so what do both parties do to stop the fascist from rising up?

Personally I think there is too much focus on identity politics and not enough on true economic change. Sanders is a start, but doesn't go far enough to enact real long term stable economic change in my eyes.

That sounds to me like people want a political revolution at the DNC and that they want the Democratic Party to move in a very different direction. They want a Democratic Party to stand up to the greed of Wall Street, the fossil fuel industry and corporate America, and represent the working people of our country and all those fighting for economic, social, racial and environmental justice.

Now more than ever, that is the Democratic Party we need. That is the kind of Democratic Party Keith will lead.

We like big goals. I think we will send an incredibly strong message to the Democratic Party if we can get more than 500,000 signatures supporting Keith Ellison to be the next Chair of the DNC when he formally announces his candidacy on Monday.

democratic civil war update

http://www.cwa-union.org/news/releases/cwa-endorses-keith-ellison-for-chair-of-democratic-national-committee

quote:

Congressman Keith Ellison is the right person to lead the Democratic Party at this time. The Communications Workers of America joins Senators Bernie Sanders and Chuck Schumer, and MoveOn.org in strongly urging Ellison to run for the Chairmanship of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party needs his leadership and direction, and we will stand behind him should he choose to run.

Ellison supports the economic policies that are critical to addressing the needs of millions of Americans who have been left out and left behind by unfair trade deals and trickle-down austerity economics. This past week, millions of these Americans fell for the siren call of phony, right-wing populism. Rep. Ellison understands that in order to win these voters back, the Democratic Party must clearly embrace its historic core values of racial and economic justice.

Ellison has proven himself a strong advocate and champion of the values that we as Democrats value and hold dear. His commitment to grassroots organizing and building a strong progressive infrastructure in every community in this country is exactly the focus our Party needs. Keith Ellison will make sure that the voices of all working Americans in all communities are heard and able to play a leading role in shaping our Party and our country's future.

not to jerk off over power but the amount of stature that bernie has gained over the last year + half is nothing short of incredible. even though he lost his campaign he has somehow arguably become the most influential voice in the democratic party. this is as a self-described socialist in a nation that spent 60+ years hammering down on socialist ideas, both through physical violence and cultural oppression. the stuff brewing under the surface to allow that to happen is really something interesting.

This is probably very true. It felt like she had to call in every single favor she'd collected over the last decade at least to get the nomination in a field she made a point to cull beforehand, and that is...uh, that was not a predictor of success.

For me, part of my support for her in the primaries was the interview Obama gave with Maron where he talked about how the federal government was like an enormous cargo ship. Even if you had perfect obedience from Congress instead of unprecedented obstructionism, or just the usual Senate prima donnas, the thing doesn't turn on a dime and make glorious Scandinavian socialism rain from the sky a week later. The Presidency has gotten more powerful over the last century, but he's still far from a dictator. It's about making steady if sometimes incremental progress on what's important to you, and then making sure the mechanisms and political support are in place to keep them there for the long term.

Hillary seemed like someone who would've been an extension of that temperament and with a similarly skilled understanding of how to manage the federal government with the goal of advancing liberal policies, even if there wasn't a lot of sexy rhetoric behind the pitch. By contrast, a lot of Bernie supporters came off, especially on social media, like people who just wanted someone to promise them the sky because Obama didn't deliver unicorns and rainbows.

To my profound and eternal regret I now know I was wrong. First, I didn't realize how spectacularly incompetent her campaign and the NY established Dems were. Second, I forgot that you need someone who can pitch your policies to people in a way that's aspirational and gets them excited about your candidacy. Someone who tries to precision calibrate their focus group tested message to multiple, sometimes conflicting constituencies with all the warmth of a press release doesn't work.

Maybe it's not fair that Hillary comes off this way. Maybe there's a much harder standard for warmth and charisma for ambitious women, and that's also not fair. Even if the deck is stacked against you though, you have have to win elections, because they have real and serious consequences. The ultimate responsibility for that is on the candidate and the campaign. Outside of a situation like 90% Dem urban districts, the purpose of the primary is to demonstrate that you're capable of that task. As a voter I hosed that up and the Bernie people were right. However, the DNC, career operatives, and super delegates who shepherded her through the process and pitched her as the responsible, competent, and safe candidate hosed that up so very, very much. The task now is to hold those people accountable and remove them from leadership positions. The next task is to find candidates that can fight for our goals, and fight for them in a way that can and will win.

Anyway that's my primary post, thanks C-SPAM autopsy thread.

Pretty much, yeah.

Like, legitimately trying to avoid actual Primary chat as much as possible, I don't think it's inaccurate of me to say that the social issue-focused progressives and the economics-focused progressives got set against each other hard this year. It's something I think was fully intended, with the expectation being that the social conscience of the people on the economics end would get the better of them and they'd turn out for the Democrats anyway - God knows it's why I went out and voted for Hillary on Tuesday, even if it was here in Alabama. I figure that's something I'm not alone in. But ultimately it was an approach meant to protect the self-interests of party elites from things that make them look bad, and it blew up in absolutely everyone's faces to give us what we now have. And that just isn't fair to me, to see the issues of any vulnerable population used like that.
