Sometimes batteries or people hate you for no reason. Has that happened before or was it an isolated incident?

Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
I've had my 5x do that before, usually when it's under 5% and I'm running Puzzle Quest. But sometimes it feels like a program locks up and the phone just randomly cuts out. I haven't figured out what's causing it. This happens like once a month, so it's not something I'm super concerned about.

My Moto X would just die at like 17%, but the battery was dying on me.

Now that I'm on Nougat, sometimes my 5X locks up and won't come back for a couple minutes. Maybe you experienced something similar?

Lockups are generally what I assume when I see graphs like that.

My 6P does that occasionally, but it had never happened til the latest developer preview, so I just blame it on me running beta software.

How is the Oneplus 3? Checks all the boxes and then some, I just wish there was a 5" screen model. The price sure is right.

So just to chime in on oneplus 3/OP3 chat since it seems devoid of responses every time someone asks.

Background: Every phone I've had was a hand me down, a 7-11 talkout phone prepaid, a samsung galaxy (wasn't a smartphone bought sometime in 2012, as using data drained the battery in 5 minutes), then a Blackberry Z10. So this is my experience coming from early android and then blackberry. I'm just a regular layperson with no special needs or requirements. I use the phone for phone stuff, light data browsing, reading ebooks and emails. I use a standalone camera to take pictures so the camera is not as important to me, and I typically carry it or have it near me all the time for work. I don't listen to music on my phone so I won't be able to really answer audio questions.

I purchased the OP3 after seeing the pixel price, because I was only willing to pay for a mid-range phone ($500 CAD) vs true flagships ($1000 CAD). While I could afford it, some features didn't matter to me so I didn't feel like paying a premium for things I won't use or rarely use. The OP3 came with a dash charger + type C cable, and a pre-applied plastic screen protector.

I've only had the OP3 for a week as I was waiting for the soft gold model to restock but I've managed to play around with it and slowly start customizing it how I want it. I'll probably be talking about this In comparison to my previous phones so while it may be a quantum leap for me for others it may be a very marginal upgrade.

Hardware

The screen is nice and bright and seems to be perfectly adequate. The phone in general seems fast and I never seem to wait for anything to happen, except when loading fairly large/detailed PDF drawings.

Physically the phone is very slippery and I would recommend having a case or getting a cover to keep a hand on it so you don't drop it.

The fingerprint reader on the front "home" button is quick to use but I sometimes have to adjust my grip to properly use it as only my thumbs can reach it properly when I place it in my palm, using it one-handed. Might be more a function of hand size or type of grip.

Personally not a fan of how the volume keys are on the left side of the phone, as I'm extremely used to right side volume controls.

The notification slider seems like a nice little addition but it shouldn't be a game changer. It has 3 settings; silent, priority, and all.

Software

I'm not too much of a computer nerd, so I can only relate experiences.

The UI seems to be very nice, simple and clean. A customize able preferred app bar on the bottom with 4 customize able spaces, the default configuration is phone, messenger, (All apps), chrome and camera. The default front screen has a google search bar at the top (google assistant?) if you want to ask a quick question, but only has 1 tab so if you have a train of thought you can only use the one tab.

Swiping left I'm not sure exactly what it is but it looks to be customizable widgets, weather and the like. Swiping right gives you more space to put apps in.

Overall I like the UI as it's very simple and seems very conventional with no intrusive or weird parts to it.

If you want to unlock the bootloader and root your phone to customize it further, it's very easy with a step by step guide available that shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes and doesn't require a book or archaic commands to have to run.

Accessories

Since I tend to use my phone in the outdoors a lot and have to worry about fall protection I purchased an Otterbox Case. It fits perfectly over the power, and volume buttons and leaves the notification slider, usb port, speakers, camera, and headphone jack uncovered and easily accessible. The case fits perfectly and doesn't cover up the screen or interfere at all with using it.

Dash charger is very very fast, I can put the phone on the charger for 10-15 minutes and I can get from 70% to almost 100%, I purchased an extra charger for work so I can leave one at home and always have one with me for work.

Considered and still considering purchasing the curved or regular tempered glass screen protector, but be warned as reviews have the protector covering a barely mm of the screen which shouldn't be problem for most people/apps but is definitely noticeable if something runs right up against the edge of the screen.

I've got my Pixel XL largely squared away. And I'm trying out the Google Keyboard and enjoying it.

The UI does seem ridiculously responsive. As in, I didn't know my previous phones could possibly be considered "not that responsive". It's a miniscule difference in time in most cases, but it's there and noticeable. And sometimes things you know would take a second or two to process on another phone (Note 7, Note 3) just don't. It's neat.

Also, am I just seeing things? Some of my youtube videos on the Pixel seem to be running at 60FPS, and I didn't notice that happening on my Note 7 or Note 3. Is there some setting that I had to set to make that happen, or was there an update I missed or something?

I have a 5, and like clockwork, whenever I'm unemployed, my phone shits the bed, and this one is no exception. It's the battery, the phone works just fine when it's plugged in, but if I do anything outside of talking on it for more than 5 minutes it just dies.

On the plus side my sprint contact just ended, but I don't want to sign another one, so I gotta keep this one going until I get a new job and can afford a pixel for Google fi.

Probably just the wrong videos. 60fps content is still pretty rare. Definitely works on my 5X.

If money is an issue, depending on usage and your current contract price you might actually save money with a new Pixel + google Fi. I did the google financing for my Pixel XL and only signed up for the 1GB/month Google Fi package(since it doesn't really matter, if you go over they just charge you the exact same rate) and my bill for the XL + google Fi is only $63. It will go down even more next month since I've only used 400mb of data so I will get a $6 credit. It should end up being cheaper than my $30 Tmobile prepaid goon plan.

Just something to think about if your current Sprint plan is anything near $60 or more. Also if you can get by without using a ton of data, I try to always just use mine on wifi at home/work/etc. Probably save another $5/month or so if you go with the regular pixel vs the XL as well.

This does seem like a oddly widespread 6P issue that cropped up around the end of MM and the start of Nougat's rollout. Mine started doing it at the 15% mark or so, then moves up and down randomly where it will just straight power off at anything from 5% to 27% or so. It seems removing the batterystats file seems to help a smidge, but only for like 3-4 charges or so.

I still get ok battery life, but I have to adjust my 0% mark up to the 30% mark just to be safe.

What I don't get is how everyone's 6P seems to be having this issue, new and old, so it's not quite as easy as just aging battery as one would assume. It is an irritating issue nevertheless and I hope Google figures out a fix stat, or if they can't, give us like $3-400 for trade in toward a Pixel for it or something. (lol yea right)

Are you certain the charging indicator is coming on when plugged in? On my Nexus 5 I had a strange issue where it could be plugged in when the battery was basically dead and work fine for a long time. But, it wouldn't be charging, so as soon as I took the cord out the battery alert would come up. I had to prop it up a bit just to get the plug angled right. It was pretty crap but did work.

Just a heads up: I plugged my Nexus 6p in today and got a weird ad that was promoting "Charge Master." I spent some time removing old apps that I no longer used. I looked through recently updated apps but I couldn't figure out what was causing this ad.

A couple of google searches later and it turns out it's a recent update to "Photo Grid: Photo Collage Maker," an app that I haven't used in a year or so. If you have that one, uninstall. Supposedly there's a setting to turn off popup ads, but gently caress that.

Here's other people dealing with it.

Think I remember somewhere earlier in the thread people mentioning that battery life slowly dieing off like that with updates is common in Android. One solution that people seemed to mention was doing a complete wipe/restore instead of simply updating and that can sometimes fix it. Sounds like a huge hassle to me but it's probably worth trying it if your phone is dying at 30% battery or something crazy like that.

I had one since July and I'd not recommend it to anyone. It looks and feels absolutely marvelous and you'll get a lot of questions about it, because it's just so different. But it's a low- to mid-end device that is already starting to show it's age a few months in. Opening apps speed is acceptable at best, the phone gets very hot during heavy use (which is a concern since it's all plastic and it'll warp) and the battery life is just absurd. I charge two - three times a day and I'm not a heavy user of any kind. It's got Quick Charge, so that doesn't take too long but when I'm out and about that doesn't help me at all.

There's also a problem with playing music through the headphone jack: Any time the phone has to do something else (which can range from simply turning on the screen to changing an app to literally anything) there's a chance playback stops and you have to unplug the headphone for playback to start again. No other way to restart your music. Looking at their message board it's a widespread problem and they can't seem to find a fix for it.

Camera is mediocre at day and unusable during any other condition.

I went in knowing some of these things because I really, really loved the design and the whole talent behind the company and thought that I'd be happy with "being a rebel" (as they call it), but I'm not. As soon as my Christmas money comes in I'm getting a Pixel and my life will be whole again.

What is the generally recommended method for deploying out Android devices which isn't one-user-one-device? We're buying some specialist devices at work which we're going to share between a few people, our company-MDM is some time away, so at least medium term, we need to figure out:

1. Should we just make one group gmail account and share that around? Trust people won't screw with that account?
2. Should we have people use their own gmail accounts (or dedicated ones they make for work) and factory reset frequently?
3. Something else (e.g. a small scale MDM)?

So is there any truth to all those battery tips that people spout all the time? Like, that it's bad to charge your battery to 100% or that you should let it charge all the way and then use it until its dead the first time you turn it on or whatever. My Nexus battery was poo poo but I chalk that up to my charging cable being poo poo, and plugging it in using any USB adapter I could find.

Just saw some dude on Forbes repeat the "it's bad to charge to 100%" thing and frankly it sounds like a load of poo poo to me.

Now that it’s been a few days, those of you who got the Google live cases for the pixel; how are you liking them so far? I’m looking at them as a possibility, but considering just getting a cheaper one instead. Normally I’m not crazy on cases, but since the back glass on the pixel is apparently pretty hard to replace (and can totally ruin the camera) I’d rather play it safe. Is the case comfortable to hold? Doesn’t bulk up the phone too much? Worth the price?

The Yahoo mail app can't do anything, and while I can navigate the Yahoo web site the thing where they want to send a confirmation code for a new device won't go through, and can't edit a posting on craigslist(although a new one worked fine). I never had any problems with my Nexus 5. None of these problems exist on wifi, only on my carrier's network.

The NFC button does a custom action, you set it in the Live Cases app. I set mine to toggle the flashlight on and off for example, it's just "okay" because it does not work reliably.
