Move over Ken Ring, there's a new game in town, with the town in question being Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Fucken Ken Ring..

I've been ignoring him for a long time now, is he still doing that thing where he basically says "I don't understand how it works so it doesn't"

Then even removed our ability to post comments on his articles because so many people pointed this out.

Poor Kaikoura, they've got to be literally the coolest, most sustainable, forward thinking township in NZ. I really hope we can get them back on their feet asap.

I didn't know something even happened until one of my acquaintance who heard the news asked whether the family was fine. I got even more confused when he said we were safe because we were up north.

It still didn't beat the time in Japan when I woke up momentary to acknowledge the quake and went straight back to sleep mildly disappointed.

So what sort of alternate routes are there through the South Island because SH1 looks like it's going to be out of action for a long rear end time. Could mess up all sorts of logistics.

Also holy poo poo that railway still technically intact, I'm genuinely impressed

Looks like the only route from chch to Picton is via Arthurs Pass then up the west coast and through Springs Junction to Nelson.

Which is pretty terrible. I guess getting the Waipara to Springs Junction road fixed will be easier than SH1. That would still be a much longer journey but a poo poo load better than via Arthurs.

Inspecting a building with some structural damage during one of those larger aftershocks isn't exactly fun.

sh7 will apparently be open for light vehicles tonight so it seems they might get that going soon. its a hell of a lot better than going through arthurs and up the west coast.

also i guess this takes tax cuts off the agenda for the election

Didn't realise we had earthquakes until I got to work. Guess you guys'll be having the last laugh when Auckland's covered in volcanic ash, though.

Stay safe, nerds.

They're midway through construction directly opposite my flat and there were three people checking the steel framework out for damage this morning, I felt so bad for them. :(

Remember when Brian Tamaki said something vaguely nice about the gays a year or two ago and everyone was like "He's changed!"

Just checking in to say what has happened to Kaikoura and elsewhere is a tragedy. For all the talk about peoples self-selected news feeds I was glad to get very focused updates from folks back in NZ, a couple of people having to evac their buildings in Wellington seems stressful af

I remember particularly - I think it was BNZ - that made a big advertising campaign about small business about the growth of the Kaikoura whale watching business from one small boat to like 4-5 large ones or what not they had at least until recently. I guess that ads going to the bin :\

Possibly because it is a American ship?

I misjudged the size of it. Apparently it's a destroyer, part of the visiting fleet here for the navy's 75th anniversary.
