the key problem here is in the american lie that "anyone can make it" statistically speaking, no, hard work and dedication will afford you a passable life but will never push you into the upper echelons of society nor give you true fulfillment. we have fooled people into thinking that the can "make it" for so long that they will vote for tax cuts on the rich because they sincerely believe that they will benefit from those cuts one day when they "make it" and then they die, never questioning things, bitter at themselves for not doing enough to "make it"
