It's not an axis, it's a triple or rather quadruple entente of facism, with Putin, Le Pen, May and Trump.
Calling it axis nowadays is insulting to the former axis states that have actually learned from the past (well, western Germany has, not sure about Austria/Italy).

Its sad that the best case scenario for France now is president short arse again but that's the sad world we live in. Also May is not a fascist as far as I can tell so I don't know why you lumped her in there with the rest of the despicables.

You guys are forgetting Orban and Duda. And I'm sure Greece will follow suit after the thorough humiliation every non-fascist politician has suffered there so far. Italy is not unlikely to turn either.

Nationalism is not fascism though, having strongmen (or -women) at the helm doesn't mean they're going to cooperate with each other toward any grand goal. They probably won't even be able to agree on whether EU is good or bad.

quote:

A Russian Mig-29 fighter jet has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea as it tried to land on the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier, the country's defence ministry has said.

The pilot ejected safely from the plane, the ministry said.

The Admiral Kuznetsov is part of a group of Russian warships recently deployed near the Syrian coast.

Nato has expressed concern planes from the carrier will be used to attack civilians in the Syrian city of Aleppo.
Refuelling controversy

The defence ministry said the crash was as a result of "technical malfunction" during a training flight.

The jet came down a few kilometres from the carrier and the pilot was picked up by a rescue team.

The ministry said that flight operations had not been suspended.

The Admiral Kuznetsov can carry dozens of fighter bombers and helicopters.

Its flotilla sailed from Russia to the Mediterranean via the English Channel.

The ships refuelled off North Africa after plans to dock at the Spanish port of Ceuta were cancelled amid Nato concerns over their mission.

The naval group also includes a nuclear-powered battle cruiser, two anti-submarine warships and four support vessels, probably escorted by submarines.

The group joined about 10 other Russian vessels already off the Syrian coast.

Accidents happen. It was pretty stupid to use Mig-29K if Su-33 (or whatever they have in ground bases) can bomb the poo poo out of civillians a lot better. Training exercise? Rivalry between navy and army?

The only reason they're doing this is because Russia wants to imagine it has force projection. There's no reason tactically or strategically for them to be using the Admiral Kuznetsov if they have available airbases. It's all for show and they can't even pull that right.

Aircraft carriers do CAP in addition to bombing, and the article says it was a "training flight", though who knows. Either way if the Russians where purely concerned about tactical expediency, I suspect they'd have left the Kuz in port and based more bombers at Latakia or something. Like the long range Bear and Blackjack bombing missions, this is an exercise in geopolitical theater (and to an extent a live fire test).

Huh, so our state-owned public television channel LTV has this show where they conduct low-key investigations on a wide range of topics. Say, how hard is it to make IEDs in Latvia, how to publish a book in Latvia, what on Earth is a Norwegian domestic offender doing in rural Latvia, and such. The latest one was them looking into the Order of the Three Stars award process. Apparently, that caused Constitution protection bureau and Security police to launch an investigation on journalists, including interception of their phone calls, location tracking, and such.

That's an easy one. he was a vocal opponent of a state owned company Bashneft being "privatized" by another state company Rosneft.

quote:

It was then privatized during 2002-3 by Murtaza Rakhimov, the boss of Bashkortostan, a crony of Yeltsin's, with a controlling interest in Bashkir Capital, a holding company controlled by Rakhimov's son, Ural Rakhimov. In 2009 a controlling interest in Bashneft was acquired for $2 billion by Vladimir P. Yevtushenkov and placed in his holding company, Sistema, but in July 2014 he was jailed and 72% of Sistema's interest in Bashnoft seized by the Russian government.[1][2] Following seizure of the company in December 2014 Yevtushenkov was released from jail, "charges not proven," but Ural Rakhimov was reported to have fled the country.[3] It is one of the larger producers of oil products in the country.[4]

Rosneft is headed by Putin's old time buddy and a part of the state strongmen faction.

The worst that could happen is he gets disgracefully removed from post and gets to enjoy leisure time as a mega-rich Russian. Siberia and prison is for peasants, def not the neo-aristocracy.

Chechen mugger is for people that criticize Putin. He'll most likely get to enjoy his wealth minus some fee. Depending on his cooperation he might get to pick England, Austria or Switzerland as his destination of choice. Worst case he gets Cyprus.

I wouldn't really go as far as saying that prison is off the charts. Russia's once richest oligarch, Khodorkovsky, did actually get to spend 8 years in prison. He didn't get out before Putin dealt with his empire, and rearranged political and financial domestic landscapes, despite significant international pressure regarding the case.

Russian artillery shelled a school in Mariinka

quote:

152mm charges hit civilian residential area and local school during the massive night artillery raid

A powerful night fire raid damaged all 3 floors of school №1, as well as several residential areas along the October, Shevchenko and Lenin streets in the town of Mariinka in Donetsk region of Ukraine. Fortunately, neither children nor adults were injured, local police inform.

Now police officers inspect and document the damage to the school №1. All three floors of the building are damaged, 42 window are broken. 157 children are still studying in this school, because it's the only one in this district. Information about the harm done to the private houses is still collected. Police qualified this deed of Kremlin proxies as a "terrorist act".

That's not the only attack by Russian militants during the previous day, although the heaviest one, Ukrainian Anti-Terrorist Operation staff informs. 21 fire raids were recorded along the whole frontline. Besides the 152mm artillery, militants also used 122mm howitzers, all kinds of mortars, air defense guns, grenade launchers of all types and sniper weapon.

As reported, unexploded Russian ‘Smerch' cluster missile was found yesterday near the Ukrainian village
